I have a 2014 RS. Chevy fitted it with rear disc brakes (the only variant of Sonic up until 2017 that has them) along with sportier shocks/ coils and different gearing. However there is no additional power so 138hp and 148 tq is all you get. I absolutely love it for what it is: a reliable and practical run about that gets close to 40mpg on the highway. Though I can't help but wish Chevy really was serious about its hot hatch potential.

For a 1.4l, the sonic is built to be a commuter car. I currently own a 2012 sonic hatch. It’s currently stage 2. Full exhaust, tune, intake, charge pipes, and intercooler, ported intake manifold, etc. these cars get up and go when they are tuned right, that sonic sounds like it’s on a stock tune. A stock sonic will make anywhere from 140-160 hp. Definitely not competition for the civic si, or ford st. These cars were not made for performance, but for gas mileage and compact attractiveness. Do not compare a slightly modded sonic to current standards, since most people buy a sonic for the compact reliability.

I built out a Turbo Sonic from 2012 as well that put down right at 300 Horsepower. It was one of the most fun cars I've ever owned. Yes drums are not ideal but I never had a problem braking. The real work happens on the front and there are discs there and that's fine. From a dead stop, you gotta use more throttle and clutch than you would on a different vehicle or it's dog slow and will really frustrate you. It's not a car you figure out in one drive, but I guarantee you that car will shock the hell out of some Mustangs. They are a blast! Keep the RPMs in the sweet spot and it will put a smile on your face all day long. Great car!

It looks pretty cool and tuner-like. I applaud whoever put it together like this because it looks to be done pretty nicely, and not over the top. I’ll say though, for any car enthusiast to buy this over a GTI is insane. Though this Sonic looks cool and is quick, it was never made to be what it is, and really lacks being a true tuner hothatch. The GTI though is meant to be a hothatch. This Sonic is meant to be bought by a young kid, as his/her first car. It’s like a Hyundai Veloster. Nothing crazy about it, but somewhat cool

I have a 2012 Chevy Sonic LT 1.4 Turbo. Totally stock. I never had a problem with braking personally. It is only 140 or so horses. I bought it as a commuter car. Gets great gas milage. Good tires make a huge difference. I ran Pirelli's followed by Continentals. Anyway, nice video. Nice to see what might have been. One other note, I believe these were actually partially designed by Suzuki, and in fact the Swift and Sonic share the same chassis, but different engine.

There would be no fight for the rear seat cup holder. I would quickly and firmly punch my fellow passenger in the nose. While said passenger tries to gather their composure, I would not only be in control of said cup holder but I would be in control of the entire back seat (-; LOL!

I love my 2014 sonic. I have had it since 2016 and I am starting to look at trading the car. Not immediately but within the next couple years. I fucking love my Sonic but it does have issues and don’t think it’s worth putting in money to fixing the same issues. So if you know of any car similar to the sonic let me know. I don’t care for the Honda Fit or Yaris. I do prefer hatchback vehicles. I enjoy how it drives except for the hesitation when accelerating .

I feel the same about my Sonic. Doesn't live up to it's namesake at all! I test drive the new Civic and Corolla and they both had tons of pep. The civic hatchback has the same cargo space as the Sonic while the Corolla hatchback was smaller.

the rev rate is NOT THE FLYWHEEL by the way. it is something the engine management does. you have something called torque delta, the engine can add in power or suppress power to keep inside of the envelope, in both the positive and negative direction. it is designed in the negative for people who are slow at shifting not to miss the downshift. on the up side it is meant to further manage power and acceleration. I have retuned my own using hp tuners, I almost disabled it altogether. the engine revs A LOT faster and the rev down was about as quick as the ka20 honda i had before it with an aluminum flywheel. so I turned it back on alittle for casual driving.

No biggie bud but its a 1.4lt turbo. The other option is a na 1.8lt. Bad News Racing makes awesome stuff for Sonics and Cruze. As does ZZP. ZZP has a Sonic that runs 13's in the 1/4 mile!

More performance than a GTI?? Well, there's the obviously exaggerated horsepower, deficient brakes, and poor steering/handling, but, hey, it sounds good. A GTI at double the cost of this is still well worth it. What is the cost, anyway? I'm guessing $5000 - $6000 tops.

It’s an LT with the LTZ hatch and badge. It’s a 1.4t not the 1.8. The LTZ came with rear disc brakes, the LT came with drums. The interior may be hard plastic but when you rest your arm on the door while driving you don’t notice it.

I would be amazed if this car, with all of the mods to it, is cracking barely over 200 whp. It was probably tuned for a linear power band to protect the rods in the lower rpm range.

He would've felt it. The tires would have been screeching and the steering wheel would have ripped out of his hands from the torque steer. He also didnt mention anything about an LSD, so it would have been one wheel peel. I have a Mazdaspeed 3 with about 255 whp and 286 lb-ft of torque (not amazing numbers by any means), and a WOT pull is a LOT more eventful than this was. And if this is the same BNR that I'm familiar with, their turbos are very popular for our cars. I'm not saying it's not possible though. But 300 whp in that car should feel blisteringly fast.
