( www.TFLcar.com ) The 2014 Chevy Sonic Turbo is a small but speedy hatchback that put the boy in boy racer. With a torquey turbocharged and intercooled DOHC 16-valve inline-4, the 2014 Chevy Sonic Turbo feels fast and sounds fast. But is it fast? Is it fast at one mile above sea level? That's a question that Nathan answers in another fun, accurate and informative TFLcar 0-60 MPH video review. Check it out as Nathan gives you his take on the this fast and fun little hatchback from General Motors.

I got the Sonic in a "Cool Blue" hatch. Owned it for two years. It has never been in the shop except for the free oil changes and tire rotation. Love the car. Drove it to Fl from MI twice. $86.00 for gas each time. Handles well at over 90mph which it reaches easily. Air works great. All kind of surprise equipment on the LT...backup cam, one touch power window up and down, on board computer tells you everything, 10 air bags, to name a few. I get compliments on it all the time. I have the 1.8L motor and it got me through the mountains on cruise kicking down just one gear on a few occasions. It merges onto the freeways just fine, and why all the fuss about the 0-60times? It is a compact car with plenty to offer. I'd highly recommend it to anyone.

I just got a LT Hatch with the 1.4T w/sunroof+mylink for 14.5 out the door (had 2K bonus earnings + costco discount) I'd get the 1.4. The 1.8 is fine, I have a similar engine in my Astra but the 1.4 is so much more fun.
@lucwolf1
@lucwolf1 8 жыл бұрын
Yes I disagree. It feels frisky in town, but is pretty slow above 50mph. No passing on a two lane if there is a car even in sight. It is a compact car. It does what it is supposed to do. I get around fine in the city for shopping, and getting to work. It goes any sane speed on the freeway, but the two laners can be sweaty palms. It feels solid. Does not get blown around by 18 wheelers. Rent one with the 1.8 and see for yourself.

I can tell by the comments most don't understand these cars are severely detuned from the factory. The factory air intake has a snorkel that can be removed for a dyno proven 2-3hp, there are restrictor plates (yes, restrictor plates....didn't believe until I saw them) that removing gains about 10hp in the midrange, and there is a bypass valve that purposefully drops boost during shifts. Remove of all that crap is free. That is not even touching the 30+hp and 40+lbft gains by just a tune alone.

Traded my 2013 Ford Focus SE for a Chevrolet Sonic LT. The Ford headliner and center console rattled, the ergonomics were bad, the engine idled rough in the morning, and the infotainment system was glitchy. The Chevy handles better, gets better mileage ( averaging 37 mpg vs 32 mpg ), no rattles, and no glitches. Additionally the Focus cost me around $6000 more than the Sonic, I feel I got ripped off when I bought the Focus.

Got paperwork in the mail for a class action lawsuit for Focus owners with auto-shift transmissions. If I still had it I could get paid for the transmission problems if I had taken it in and complained about how the car would upshift and accelerate after letting off throttle and the clunking into gear and jerking.

Nathan! I absolutely agree on this vehicle! Buy it! I will also agree that the Fiesta has a slightly better interior, but the price premium that Ford seems to be asking, for me, just isn't worth it. The Sonic presents a very nice value proposition. Nice review!

I don't understand why he rags on the 1.8 liter. I actually did rent a base Sonic LS sedan with an automatic for a few days and found it plenty fast on both city and highway. Surpassing posted speed limits without really trying. It was very peppy, and the handling was excellent. I'm 6'6" and was comfortable for hours of driving. I don't know what the TFL guy is looking for, but I walked away from the base Sonic quite impressed. My only issue was that the textured fabric on the center armrest was rough on the elbows, but that's a very small issue.

I was considering the 2013 Sonic LT (with the turbo engine) and the 2013 Hyundai Elantra. I ended up with a 2013 Mazda 3 sport (it took two test drives to win me over). Although the other two runner ups were nice choices , the Mazda won me over with it's combination of good looks , excellent M/T , steering , and handling qualities...

The one I bought has the 1.4 turbo, 16" alloys, pretty much everything you can get without going into any extra dealer packages, and I got mine for $12.9K, even though the sticker price was $14.4K The one he tested must've been fully loaded and that borla package probably jumped the sticker price.

I have one. It is smooth. The 1.8 is not dead slow. It's no Turbo but it's quick enough for what it is. 8.9 sec. The Fiesta is dead slow. I test drove it. The Sonic is much more responsive... that PowerShift trans sucks the life out of an otherwise good motor. Which sucked cuz I did like the Fiesta but the Sonic was smoother.

If you're looking for something quick, just get a used fiesta ST. It's an actual performance variant of the base. The 1.8 Sonic is tons of fun with the 5speed manual, but the turbo version is a huge price leap for a whole lot of nothing except a slash in displacement. I think the base Sonic is a really good car and great value.

It is actually quite a good little car. As for the price, you can option most cars into an absurd range so that really isn't an issue. A moderately loaded version is actually a pretty good buy, especially after discounts. The little turbo motor is definitely the one to have though. At sea level the 1.8 is OK, but just OK.

I've have the '12 version of this car (LT Hatch Turbo 6MT but without all the silly painted wheel/exhaust nonsense) and think it's one of the best cars for the money out there. One note: that floor panel in the cargo area can drop down into the space below it to make one large compartment. Makes it a much more useful space for suitcases or large dogs. Great review, definitely on point regarding the cheap materials inside, but you get what you pay for.

Doesn't the Fiesta ST more directly compete with that trim line of Sonic? Is the Fiesta ST even out yet? If not, I understand, but if so, that would make more sense :-). Love your videos!

What else can you get for 18k? Not much. This is a great car for 18k. With the end of the year deals chevy is making, you can get this car for around 15k. Worth the money.

You are lucky to get the Sonic with that 1,4 liter turbo engine in the US. Here in Denmark its offered with - and I am not kidding you - a naturally aspirated 1,2 liter from the same engine family as the 1,8 available in the US. 50-75 MPH in top gear takes...wait for it... around 40 seconds. For this reason and due to heavy competition from several other manufacturers, the Sonic don`t sell well here.

Say the exhaust belongs on a 19 year olds Civic. Then follows that up with very juvenile reverse donut. So cool....

I like my 1.4T LT. I got it to use as an economical daily driver that's safe for my kids and roomy enough for adults. Mine came with the "LTZ promo package" so I got the fog lamps, bigger rims and mylink stereo. It's surprisingly quiet for a boxy, small subcompact. Don't kid yourself though, it's no sports car... Tons of airbags and 100% made in USA.

George Nada It's not. 20% of the parts are sourced from Korea, 47% Canada/USA, and 33% Europe. Assembled in the USA...yes. 100% made in the USA...certainly not. GM is pushing the "assembled in the USA" on this car, but clearly it has mostly foreign parts.

+TheBluehornz01 And push "assembled in USA" GM should. It beats the Ford Fiesta, shameless made in Mexico crapolla with it's 15% US/Canadian parts content.

It beats the Fiesta shameless? Find 1 review comparing the 2 where the Sonic is the better choice. Just 1...from a legit source. Have now driven both. Sonic turbo isn't bad, but that Fiesta ST spanks it all day everyday.

TheBluehornz01 I said the Fiesta is shameless in it's 15% US/Canadian parts content and Mexican assembly. And to each his own, it's all subjective, especially with two closely matched cars. But there are various reasons to believe the Sonic edges out the Ford on equipment and specification alone. Five-star crash rating for one. Autotrader seemed to prefer the Sonic. You see, it's not all about "spanking" all day, but living everyday… www.autotrader.com/car-reviews/2014-ford-fiesta-vs-2014-chevrolet-sonic-which-is-better-225721

Cool little car - perception is a funny thing though. This is considered zippy and fast at 8.5 seconds 0-60 and a base Golf is considered bog-slow while posting the same numbers. Domestic automakers need to focus more on the "hot hatch" category, while at the same time NOT trying to appeal solely to the "boy-racer" crowd. Forget about noisy exhaust systems, spoilers, loud interior colors, gadgety gauge clusters, etc. Build a reliable, understated, comfortable "hot hatch" and see how it goes...okay?

I rented the 1.8 it wasn't all that bad for a rental car. My other choice was a Yaris. Fuel economy wasn't that great only managed a bit over 29mpg avg. So if the turbo can get that city it would make for a great little commuter. As for another turbo car in the segment I believe the fiesta offers 2 turbo engines. The upcoming 1.0 ecoboost and the ST with the 1.6 ecoboost.
