In this video, we revisit one of our all time favorite community hacks to see if it still works. Nearly 3 years ago we learned that you could make a DIY Flange for EMT Conduit with off the shelf parts. Check out the links below for more information. Rigid electrical conduit and water pipe both have tapered (NPT) threads. Water pipe connectors are also tapered, and conduit couplers are straight (IP) threads. Because the water flanges are so thin they are threaded undersize to accept the first few threads of the taper, so they get tight before the pipe comes thru the back side of the flange. The water flanges can be modified by cutting them a little deeper with a NPT tap which is more common at a hardware store than a straight IP tap.

Hey, Jake, Randy here. I was looking at the Home Depot app and noticed they list an item they call a “Decor Flange” that is a slim cast iron 1/2 in flange with IPS threads-they say designed for decor projects like pipe shelves, lamps. . . IPS thread is definitely a straight thread. In fact, they have a LOT of decor pipes and cast fittings for DIYers-though far less versatile than Maker Pipe! When I used this flange hack a while back, the conduit connector definitely “bottomed out” inside the flange as it was clearly getting tighter and tighter as it went in. I expect my flange was a tapered female NPT thread but I just forced it down in there. I always thought that was the point.

I was just in Lowe's the other day testing this all out and I learned about the threading issue. It couldn't have been better timing for y'all to drop this video! Thanks!

The threads for pipe and conduit look the same but are different, I learned that the hard way by breaking a tooth on a conduit dye while threading pipe.

I had a similar problem where I wanted to screw a 1/2 nipple THROUGH the bottom of a flange. The flange was mounted on one side of a board and I needed to come in from the other side of the board. Luckily I had a 1/2 -14 tap on hand. However, they are less than $20 new today. If the tap is NPT (a.k.a. tappered), you'll need to run it all the way through the flange. If the tap is UNC you should be able to tap as normal.

The one that works was designed to be a decoration item I think. Menards has a pre made shelf bracket and it's the same AM 1949.

Worrying about machining tolerances while relying on set screw couplings for structure is the height of something.

Plumbing and electrical threads are different standards because their purposes are vastly different- Plumbing fittings are designed for fluid sealing, not electrical continuity. Conduit fittings ensure proper grounding and electrical bonding. Electrical conduit threads may be too shallow for plumbing applications, leading to weak or improper seals.

Obviously not sealing anything here. More like table legs and similar to get an industrial look.

Uh, reference the self drilling screw. Doesn't that put a sharp point in the EMT? I'm a hack, so what do I know, but (behold the underlying truth) I believe code calls for the THHN wire to be 100% covered. When an inspector sees two flanges, what are they thinking is between them? Suggestion to solve both potential issues. Use rain tight connectors on both flanges. Run the EMT through the connector, the flange, the space, and the other flange connector. If there is a question, loosen the rain tight connector, unscrew the flange, and simply slide it up the EMT. Smile to your self, just not where the inspector can see you. Then use butt connectors as needed to continue the run.

You're worrying about a thing that would never happen because no electrician uses these stupid fucking things for any reason.
