Find out why I’m ditching pocket clip knives for good and switching to small fixed blades. Say goodbye to ruined pants! Good quality jeans are not cheap and once your pocket clip knife starts chipping away at the fabric at the top, and anywhere else it showed signs of wear, you are well on your way to destroying them. Watch and see just what they have done to all my favorite jeans.
Oh, and for you regulars with a sharp eye for detail, I actually made this video prior to the one about the cutting boards while wearing sunglasses. Really could have used them that day, but it was much more overcast and I could man up for a while. But, in hindsight, it was pretty stupid.

Odd. I've worn a pocket-clip folding knife for around 30 years, various makes and clip designs, and never once had one eating my pocket the way your pants are showing. Perhaps it's a difference in environment - I was a city/desk worker all my life, didn't have a chance to spend large amounts of time working outdoors, so maybe that makes a difference. But for me, this is a solution still looking for a problem.

I carry a Swiss army knife on a homemade clip made out of a large cotter pin and a fishing clip. It works great. I have it where it fits loose enough to slide over the denim easily. If you still have a problem with clips wearing out the top of the pocket, I would think the best course of action would be to whip stitch the area where the clip normally lies on new pairs of jeans and then replace the whipping if it wears out so that the denim under it would never wear out.

Idk if this is interesting or relevant in any way, but as someone who lives in a country with strict knife laws where the law is really vague around it on top of that (its one of those "you have to have a sufficient reason but we will never tell you what we consider a good enough reason), this is a problem ive tangled with for quite a long time. SAKs and similar multitools have gotten a bit of a free pass for a long time since they are generally considered very un-threatening and the general public just considers them a tool, but any dedicated and/or "scary looking" knife is just not something you want to be caught in public with. So the obvious answer have been small folders with pocket clips, such as a Delica. I havent ruined my pants, but the moment I clip a Delica and a tiny edc flashlight in my pocket, I just cannot fit my hand down that pocket to retrieve anything from the bottom anymore. Fixed blades are out of the question for anything outside my own property or in the woods/worksite etc because of said laws. Ive also tried what you said of just taking off the clip, but after having one of my knuckles snipped off from a Hogue Deka with a bad detent I dont wanna do that anymore either. So I have come to 2 solutions that actually work out well for me. One is making a custom swiss army knife with a spyderco blade in it and whatever tools I actually want, which is a good compromise imo. The other is to simply wear work pants, if you wear work pants with those carpenter pockets and padded knees etc, noone bats an eye if theres a knife hanging off you 😂 Oh and I dont know if you remember but I commented about the insane price of the Buck 110 where I live? I just checked the Izula and the 1095HC version is 170 bucks. Yay me.

Just lightly sand down the spot where the pocket clip land on the scale and maybe try to reduce the pocket clip tension. And for the pants already destroyed you can ask a leather worker for their spare scraps and make a new pocket lip with some thread and large needle. Just cut a large enough patch to cover the entire worn area.

@knifetimestory I haven't seen any comments here agreeing that this is a problem... You must be doing something wrong by carrying a knife or pocketknife and it's destroying your pants. Even with cheaper jeans, like the ones I use for heavy work, I've never had one of them fray in the pocket... I usually lose at least 2 pairs of pants when I'm on a heavy job, mainly on the legs and thighs, but I've never had one of them damaged in the waistband of the pocket... I really don't understand how that could be possible... I'm not the type of guy who could be said to be the most delicate, on the contrary, I weigh around 100 kg (220 pounds) and I'm a little over 1.8 m (6 feet) tall. I'm not fat... When I was in the army, there was a corporal who had to change his shoes (boots or other office shoes) every 2 months at most because they would rip! No one could understand that, a pair of boots ripping after 2 months of use... Some people are definitely different...

How/why does a pocket clip knife cause such a problem? Knife in or out of the pocket? I've been wearing knife "in" for decades and not one pair of pants has worn out the pocket before other wear made them unwearable. If the knife is too big to be clipped "in" the pocket then it probably would be too big for comfort while sitting in my office chair. So my "pocket" knife is smaller, and I have a large folder in the desk drawer, in the truck, in the night stand, down in the basement, and etc. for when bigger is needed. And did you say a knife on your hip is illegal? On private property? You need a new state. One day I was out working and needed to make a quick run to the gas station (about 2 miles round trip) to fill up the gas cans. It wasn't until long after I was back at work when the .357 on my hip snagged on a branch and I realized I had forgot to remove it before my errand. (Normally I feel "concealed" around town makes me less of a target should someone of ill intent happen to be in the vicinity.)

No, no no. That knife is LEGAL. Maybe I spoke too quickly, or you were listening to slowly.😂. Also… That kind of pocket wear is the result of 25 years of constantly playing with the knife that’s in my pocket. In and out in and out in and out and using the knife as a fidget toy rough estimate… 25 times a day. That creates a lot of wear and tear over the years.

Clips destroy pants, leather chairs, vehicle finishes, doors, etc.... And it interferes with pocket carry of a revolver. Done with clips. I wear carpenter jeans and the tool pocket is perfect for my Spyderco.

Easy solution….you can trim down a plastic shirt pocket protector and use it in your pants pocket. Just use a little excess tape from the bridge repair you did on your glasses to seal the edge you had to trim and voila! No more sad pants!

I don’t know how you all destroy your pants. I carry a pocket clip knife every day, and have for at least 3 decades. I very very rarely ever see any wear on my pocket. The pants wear out in many other areas long before I ever see anything on my pockets. Maybe it’s the quality of pants or the fit, I’m not sure but there has to be another reason.

Knife laws are just freaking stupid. I quit carrying pocket clip knives because I lose them. I carry a knife in my pocket always and usually one on my belt if I’m working. I have large hands and I think I was probably pulling the knives part way out of my pocket when just going after my wallet or what not then they would fall out later on.

Not legal to even carry a lock knife here without VERY very good reason...and a fixed blade, almost zero chance. How about wearing the pocket clip knives clipped into a very thin IWB kydex or similar belt loop or some other gizmo? Something stronger than fabric, but slim enough to not damage the clip? Should be possible. Think of the Yaqui (?) belt slide holster, or one of the Chic Gaylord minimalist rigs....

LI. I've been there and well, I'll admit I was in the western part and basically they are all NYC people who can't afford NYC. Perhaps the easter part is better. Used to be all farmland out there. Upstate is the part that should secede from the NY and form a new state. We get hammered tax-wise for NYC BS. And...we provide them with all their water. How about calling it North New York and then charging NYC for all the water and electricity it uses.
@thriftingsistersaudrey
@thriftingsistersaudrey 2 ай бұрын
@@knifetimestory Yes Nassau County, the county closest to Queens(NYC) has many people from the City but they vote Republican as they have seen high property taxes, along with high electric rates too. Suffolk county has boomed in people not wanting the colder temps of Upstate, and they also vote Republican & most Dems are conserative in actions. The farmers are being pushed out and no one is on board with Gov "Huckleberry" plan for heating pumps and no fireplaces, or no gas stoves. The NYS gun laws don't favor law abiding citizens and NY is too lax on prosecuting crime in the "blue" cities. The DA's in the 2 LI Counties have been voted in to try to clean up the Gov's mess.

If you need proof that knife laws are BS, simply compare laws in NY vs. Oregon. In Oregon, the knife must NOT be concealed, especially in regards to "automatic" knives (which I believe are entirely illegal in NY for no good reason) and fixed blades. In fact, in Oregon, there are very few limits on fixed blades as long as they are clearly visible - exactly the opposite of NY. Go figure.
