@@ChristopherMichaelLaw Yes keep up the good work funny entertaining and I’m learning a lot too. I am at the beginning of my film making journey really. I have made some short talking head films for my job on a Sony FS5 mk 2 they borrowed. It looks good but I filmed something at the same time as a guy with a black magic cinema camera and I thought the footage looked amazing. It’s probably a lot to do with his experience with getting the right exposure but it definitely looked nice. When I can afford the investment I’d like to get a black magic 4K. Thanks again 👍

No problem, thanks for the support. You're right, experience can make a big difference, but in terms of picture quality alone I don't think any camera offers more bang for your buck than the pocket 4K.

This is basically just a worse Tilta Mirage. The Mirage costs about the same, but also has an optional remote controlled motor to adjust the variable ND, which is useful on a gimbal and it's tied to a new line of circular slide-in filters that are cheaper than regular square filters.
@ChristopherMichaelLaw Жыл бұрын
The smallrig can also use a motor to control the VND.
@mrshaheedmalik Жыл бұрын
You still have to buy the motor with the Tilta Mirage. This is no different.

Is this matte box is good for bmpcc 6k full frame? Please

It will work with the Blackmagic cinema camera full frame

What is the quality of ND filtration with this setup vs separate 4x5/65 ND filters (assuming quality glass). This with vari ND is convenient and tempting, but I find when things are too convenient there is likely a trade off. I have never used a variable ND, but as a still photographer, I'd rather a straight ND filter or set over a variable NDs. With video I don't know if it's as big of a tradeoff.
@ChristopherMichaelLaw Жыл бұрын
This type of question is always hard to answer because so much about it is subjective. What I think of as an expectable trade off might be unexpectable for someone else. Assuming you have top quality NDs, then yes, there is a trade off over picture quality. Most filmmakers (including myself) are happy to make that trade off because of the speed, connivance and extra control you have with a VND. If exposure changes you can subtly compensate for it. Really it's a budget thing, if you have the time or crew to use NDs over VNDs then you'll probably get a better picture. But that's normally the realm of narrative TV and feature films, I'd say 90% of filmmakers are using a VND of some type - of course I'm speaking in very general terms. As for the SmallRig VND I'd say it falls into the good category. It's a lot better than the cheap $10-$40 ones you'll find on Amazon. There's probably one or two brands out there that have better one but the price is so much more, they don't work with the matte box system and the improvements in image are incremental.

Is it possible to put Nisi circular VND into that frame? I have 82mm one and Smallrig Mini Matte Box right now,. It works, but it is not perfect solution.

Hey! So just to be sure, does the VND filter from Smallrig have IR cut on it? And if it doesn't do you know of a great alternative to use with this matte box, I've been trying to find one all day lol
@ChristopherMichaelLaw Жыл бұрын
As far as I know the VND does not have IR cut. I don't think any VND has IR cut anymore. I have heard that Tiffen used to make one but I have never seen it. Your best option would be to use a clear 4x5.65 filter in the filter tray in front of the VND, but be warned they are not cheap. A number of companies make them - Schneider True-Cut IR - Tiffen infrared control filter. Sorry I can't be of more help. It's something I'm looking into myself, if I find anymore info I'll let you know.

@joeschlicht Жыл бұрын
@@sergiofilmmaker94 I'm having this same dilemma - Small rig vs NiSi. One one hand the Small Rig allows for circular thread mount filters, and additional trays for stacking filters. On the other is the NiSi with allegedly better filter quality but you are limited to two filters only. Of the two matte boxes, which is made better? I have read the clamps on the NiSi are plastic. Does this pose a problem at all? Could always put a circular threaded IR cut filter on the lens and continue with the Small rig, but I'm not convinced of the Vari ND from what I have seen in some other videos.

I saw a Jesse Driftwood tweet where he said the aim of life was to get to a point where you give zero fucks about what anyone else thinks is cringe. I couldn't agree with him more. However your point that the colours may not be accurate in the video is a fair one. Maybe I'll do a part of future videos without a grade so those that are interested can see the colours closer to what they look like irl.
