I'm from Alaska and the flag actually has a great story. An orphan named Benny Benson won a contest to design the flag when he was 14. 8/5 stars was extremely fair.

​@@felixhenson9926 Alaska is the northern most state. It's state motto is "North to the future". Pair this with the general theme of the American flag being the "Stars and Stripes", and you can understand how logical it is to use Ursa Major (or the Big Dipper) on the state flag as this constellation is commonly used to find the North Star. Indeed the North Star can be seen in the upper right hand corner. It's very symbolic for a place nicknamed "The Last Frontier" to feature navigation on it's flag too. In addition to all of this the latin name for the constellation is Ursa Major, which means "Great Bear". Not only does Alaska have three different species of bear (brown bear, black bear, and polar bear), but it has 98% of America's brown bear population specifically. One of the subspecies of brown bear it has is the largest brown bear in the world (that we know of). It's called the Kodiak bear, and together with the polar bear (which Alaska also has), it is one of the two largest living bears in the world. So yeah, all of that combined is why.

Keith, my wife and I love your guys content. When it came to the state of Hawaii's flag, we appreciate that you said your opinion. My wife, being of Hawaiian descent, and I agree with you about the colonialism of the official state flag (especially given the illegal overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy by American businessmen and Hawaii only becoming a state because, at the time, the only people allowed to vote were American citizens living in Hawaii, not the Hawaiian people) but your opinion of the red, yellow, green flag, we think, stems from you from not understanding the symbolism of the colors and what the symbol is in the middle so we thought we would explain: green represents the 'aina (which means land), red for the koko (which means blood, as in the blood of the Hawaiian people), and then yellow represents the feathers used in the sacred capes of the 'Ali'i (which is the royalty). The symbol in the middle is of two canoe paddles crossed behind a kahili (which is a royal standard of the Hawaiian monarchy - which is like a European coat of arms but it's made of yellow feathers on a long pole carried by a servant of the King or Queen either ahead of or behind them (or both) in a procession). A flag with palm trees and leis and roasted pigs isn't culturally representative of Hawaii - it's more representative of tourism and colonization - but we get what you meant.

I’m from Arkansas and we learned about the state flag and diamond mine probably in 4th grade and then again in 8th grade during Arkansas History class. I’ve never been to the crater of diamonds (it’s more of a dig site than a mine) BUT it’s one of the only sites in the world where the public can dig and is entitled to keep whatever they find! A little girl recently found a 3 carat diamond there!

Arkansas born and raised here! We had a whole week dedicated to the state flag + state history in like the 2nd grade (that was around ‘09 for me so maybe it’s changed). We would also take trips to these caves where we’d sift through dirt for diamonds but would basically find little crystals at best. Don’t know anyone who has diamonds, the richest people in Arkansas are people w/ close ties to Walmart and the Walton family

New Mexico yay! The red part is actally the symbol of the Zia people, one of the many pueblo tribes here :) edit: Story goes that the Spanish conquistadors saw Zia pueblo "glowing" in the distance during one of our beautiful sunsets and they mistook it for El Dorado, city of gold.

In 2020, scotus ruled that about half of Oklahoma should be jurisdictionally controlled by the Muscogee Nation, based on the fact the Creek reservation existed before the state did and that was never honored (surprise...). That mostly changes how criminal law works, but that's not new in that it worked like that in all other recognized reservations. Basically, serious crimes involving native perpetrators must be tried in federal courts, lesser crimes to be handled by the Tribal Gvmt. That also means past criminal cases can be challenged/reopened because they were tried in the wrong jurisdiction.

Oklahoman and Native here. This entire state used to be a reservation and there's still a plethora of tribal nations here along with reservations. Our plates used to read until recently, "Native America." Pass through Tahlequah, you'll see tons of signage in Cherokee. All that to say, it's the most fitting way to honor our once painful history.

Good news! Utah's new state flag still has a beehive, but now it is also has mountains and incorporates red in honor of the red rocks in southern Utah. I wish we could have seen his reaction to the new one.

@@ariellebro Luckily the 2011 isn't gone, it's just being used where that design actually makes sense. It's still the seal and will still be on the types of things where you'd put a seal, just not up on a pole where you can't easily tell what it is from a distance. It's also nice that this one is easy to recreate, which means it's easier for people to use or draw and through that, feel more connected to their state.

I think that many of these flags (mostly the ones with seals) are recreated for Wikipedia so that they have vector versions. That explains why the Kansas flag, for example, looks like "someone's cousin" did the illustration or why some look like MS Paint. It's just someone trying to recreate it as a vector graphic as best they can, possibly based off of a relatively small or low resolution image.
