Everytime i mention this in some forum ppl set me off as crazy. But its totally true and i feel like more and more ppl will experience this. For me i didnt get those headaches right from the start, but rather over time. This was particularly bad cause i didnt knew what was the cause of my ill feeling. I really hope manufactures start to take this problem serious and build displays and are TRUELY eye caring or should i say brain caring.

I am more resistant to PWN. I can withstand few hours of use but afterwards I have splitting head and when I close my eyes. I can see the flickers in my eyes when I’m sleeping. Also…it affects my Color vision. My vision became very dull lacking in colour in Real Life and almost muted. The Color receptor in my eyes became dull. It’s almost as if they’re strained by the OLED. Overstimulated and now they’re burnt out. This is very dangerous. Even people that is not sensitive to this are doing unknowning damage to their vision overtime. Stick to LCD. They’re safest

I recently upgraded from an iPhone 7 to a iPhone 13 mini. The 13 mini is huge upgrade from the 7; battery life, cameras, full screen, phone speed, etc. are wonderful. I had the 13 mini for roughly a week in a half and then bam, I started to notice eye strain. I didn’t get nausea or headaches as some have reported, but just dry eye and noticeable eye discomfort accompanied by occasional vision blurriness. I was aware of PWM prior to upgrading, but after going to different stores and looking at the phone, it didn’t have an noticeable affect on me at all. Like I previously stated, I didn’t notice the affects until after upgrading and having the phone for roughly a week in a half. Unfortunately, this PWM issue really takes the joy out of using this phone. On a helpful note, using white point (@ 80% or higher), adjusting brightness (to 100%) and using dark mode have somewhat helped w/ my eye strain (they say it decreases PWM). I also have significantly reduced my screen time from like 5 hours a day to like a hour and a half a day (if that). I also try to hold my phone at a half arms length distance. After researching, if someone is looking to get a newer phone, it may be best to go w/ a LCD display like a iPhone 11 or SE 2022; I’ve read these phones have no PWM. Or, if you’re going to stick it out (like I may have to), hopefully Apple releases a software update that helps resolve this PWM issue since it appears to be a software problem. This sucks man lol. Thanks for your video. It appears not to many are talking about this.

Btw settings you mentioned helped me with 12.. so, eventually 12 worked better for me..And I don't have eye problems, I've seen a doctor recently. I'd like to have an ability to use apple phones. Macbook air m1 2020 is comfortable for my eyes. As for a doctor, nothing special. She couldn't do anything with my intolerance to iphone screens, says it can be some kind of sensitivity, mb too much blue light. So she doesn't know for sure. But it's a general clinic, not an eye center, maybe It's worth visiting eye clinic for a more detailed examination. But I doubt that it can be smth with my eyes that can cause such selective reaction. She also prescribed mousturizing eye drops (already use them sometimes) and antiinflammatory drops 'cause I had that bad reaction after iphone, some anti blue-light glasses, rest when working with screens - so some basic recommendations. Now eyes are fine and they stay fine until I look at the iphone screen. It's mindblowing to me that not more people are complaining about this. But then again I read reports of how 26% of people have mental health problems in the US, so I wonder if people are just accepting it. I've been having problems since the X. And if it wasn't for your initial video I never would have realised it was the phone. Now I can't even drive most modern cars. They all use this crap cheap "energy efficient light" that's based on PWM. Same for most LED's in restaurants. It's not hypochondriac, there is a small chance that u get used to it. I got used to my car after 3 months but I think it's more that my eyes learned not to engage with the nav screen and look at it directly. Mostly just glare. But you can't do that with a phone. Overall, as somebody else on here pointed out. I think the whole technology is just bad risk reward. I'm still on my 4yr old iPhone 8 because of it and see no other options at the moment. There was a thread somewhere where people tried to replace the OLED screen for an LCD, but techs decided against it. I would love to try that.

I'm a big Apple fan too, I have the new watch, new ipad, airpods, new macbook pro... and a 4 year old iPhone b/c of PWM 😂 I've been getting PWM headaches since 2011 but didn't realize that was the cause of them until a couple years ago. I remember having a 3 week long headache when I got my first OLED phone(Galaxy S2), but I had been diagnosed with migraines about a year prior though so I didn't really make the connection at the time. The headache finally went away but I still had nausea and eyestrain, which I also didn't think too much of since I've been nearsighted since 2nd grade. I figured maybe my eyes were just getting worse. But over the years I started noticing that whenever I upgraded my phone(all Samsung OLED phones) I'd get that 3 week headache again. I think my eyes would somewhat get used to the screens after a few weeks, but the different screen size & PWM rates on the new phones triggered that adjustment period each time. Nausea & eyestrain never went away. I finally put 2 and 2 together in 2020 when I realized I hadn't felt nauseous, had eyestrain, or had a single headache since fall of 2018- when I switched to an iPhone 8+ with an LCD screen. I bought a 13 pro last year hoping that maybe the 120hz screen would make a difference. I tried for months to get used to it but it was just headache after headache, honestly I think the refresh rate makes it even worse for me :( I tried using it again for the past 3 days and I'm sitting here nursing a splitting headache right now. I guess it's back to my trusty old 8+ for good. It's still a great phone and I'm happy with it(and touch ID is sooo much better than face ID lol), it just hurts that I spent so much money on the 13 pro and can't even use it. I wonder if Apple knows how many people have this problem, I really don't know what I'll do if they ever fully switch over to OLED. I have no interest in switching back to android but even android phones are all OLED now. I plan to stick with my 8+ till it dies then move on to an SE, and just hope they don't discontinue it.

For PWM the solution is go to Accessability >> Display and Text Size >> Scroll down and turn on Reduce white point 85%.
@proradus2 жыл бұрын
Sadly, this doesn't solve the problem. The intended solution is to get brightness to maximum and dim the screen with reducing white point. Since PWM is mostly used to lower brightness it should't be present when the brightness is at its maximum. Not the case with OLED iPhones. PWM is still present at 100% brightness and it's bad enough to give some people eye strain and headaches. It's a shame Apple doesn't want to implement DC dimming feature that some android phones have.

Not quite. I had issues with the previous OLED phones from Apple, but the iPhone 13 wasn't part of those.
