280mm aio's are my favorite. I feel like they're generally quieter than 240 and 360mm's and they perform about as well as 360mm aio's. It would be cool if 140mm was more common. I'm not sure I've ever even seen one, but there are instances they make sense. The top and rear of some cases come to mind. I'm sure they would perform better than a 120.

I had a 240MM cooler on my 7700K. I ended up having the CPU delidded and binned by Silicon lottery. After, on the same cooler, it ran at 5.1ghz all day long. I still eventually upgraded to a 9900k which actually ran quite well at 5.0 on a 240mm cooler. I also found that replacing the fans that came with the x62 with be quiet fans made it much, much quieter at the same RPM.

I was in the market for a new AIO to upgrade from my Corsair H55 120mm. I was going to go for the NZXT X63 240mm, but there was only £10 difference between that and the 280mm version, so I went for the bigger one (Cooler Master h500 case) and I'm glad I did, especially with what you said about the 36% difference. I now run my R5 3600 at 4.4GHz at 1.3v and temps when gaming are around 50c with the pump running at full under load. When not under load the pump is at around 65% and around 30c and I cannot hear it pumping away.

The only stat that matters is heat transfer capability. Generally a larger aio will have a bigger surface area which lets it shed heat faster. Larger also have a bigger thermal mass because there is more liquid which allows it to absorb heat faster from the cooling block.

How noisy would 240 fans be on something like 3900x or 3700x? I am sensitive to noise.
@alexsiniov4 жыл бұрын
I usually go with simple math, 150W per 120mm radiator. My cooled components power consumption is around 400W CPU 170W in OC, GPU 240W full load, Chipset ~5W, VRM efficiency losses ~5% of CPU power, so max possible thermal load is 450W, gaming load ~ 350-400W, browsing 150W. So 360mm Xflow rad with 3x arctic freezer keeps loop temp pretty efficiently with total silence and good waterflow. 240mm EKWB 60mm thick radiator I had before handled it ok, but was getting hot after saturating the coolant volume. 40mm thick 360mm does much better with less load on pump due to no restriction because of X flow design. I love my cooling system, have it for 8 years already, did 2 platform changes and 2 GPU changes over this time, just drop in and not caring about cooling capacity. So I don't get builds with 3x 360mm radiators 🤦♂️
@Denso4814 жыл бұрын
The fans in the 360mm are louder at the same level of air pressure produced compared to an 280mm alright, but since the cooler is overall more efficient, they need not spin as fast,meaning: 3 120mm fans at lower speed have the same cooling capacities as two faster 140mm fans while operating at the same volume. In short:When you make a noise normalized comparison, they have the same cooling at the same temperature.
@jcbparsons24 жыл бұрын
Watching those makes me feel bad buying the aurora r11 lol. It has a 120mm aio I’m pretty sure, but I made it into a push and pull type and put on thermal paste myself and my temps are 70-80. Is this good? Also I have been loving you two and the channel since I found it!

Check case and ram clearance too! My Be Quiet 500dx has a ram conflict with a 280mm on the roof, but 240mm is fine.
@joshnlevinson3 жыл бұрын
Perhaps all things being equal a 280 would be quieter than a 360, but that won't necessarily be the case in the real world (with different models having different types of fans, etc.). For instance, I had a Corsair H110i 280mm cooler that sounded like a jet engine taking off under load. I now have an Arctic Liquid Freezer II 360 that is WAY quieter at max fan speed (night and day difference). I haven't compared the two on the same CPU, but I'm pretty sure the Arctic also cools better than the Corsair. So I don't think one can generalize and say a 280mm cooler will necessarily be quieter than a 360mm cooler.
@lukas1254 жыл бұрын
I have an 8700k with a Corsair 240mm aio and I run at 4.9GHz with 35-40c idle and 75c on 100% load. You must have had a bad chip or a really bad aio
@its_seezz88444 жыл бұрын
5:30 You are correct on saying 3x 120mm fans are louder than 2x 140mm fans but the 3x fans make up for their noise using a larger radiator meaning the circulating water is more cooler on a 360mm radiator than a 280mm radiator and 2 the 360mm liquid cooler has a 14% larger surface area covering the CPU meaning its more efficient in cooling the CPU. with all that, I think you are incorrect sir.
@lystic93924 жыл бұрын
Wouldn't you advice to go for air cooling instead of AIO? Every time I dig into alternative cooling systems I find the same arguments that air cooling can be quieter, less maintenance and just as effective as liquid cooling solutions. The only downside I can find is that they are BIG but in terms of aesthetics I think it's kinda cool to have these huge heat-sinks and fans in there.
@sonicwingnut3 жыл бұрын
For some stupid reason my case hasn't enough room at the top to fit a 240mm rad even though the vent is there, so running a 120mm but in push-pull config. It works well enough. Decent thermal paste plus offset undervolting my 3800X performs nicely.
@mihapeterca79404 жыл бұрын

Your math doesnt work out. 1. A 140 fan has a bigger diameter than a 120 fan thus the outer rotor blades on the 140 spin faster at the same rpm thus 140s are louder at the same rpm. Keep that in mind for my second point: 2. 360*120*1000rpm > 280*140*1000rpm. You neet to run the 140s at a higher rpm than the 120s to match the volume of air moved. Even tho point 1 shows that at the same rpm they already are louder. 3. Decibel and "loudness" is not a linear scale. So 3*medium sound level is way less than 2*higher sound level. 4. If you dont have a need for a 360 you dont have to spend the money, 280 do have some advantages like mounting or fitting in smaller cases sometimes. But a 360 does cool better.

A 10-core i9 can certainly benefit from a 360mm or 280mm, but for everything else a 240mm or smaller is okey dokey. Why should I go for a AIO when my Noctua NH-D14 rivals them all and has been working fine for a decade. Fans still feel like new and no annoying waterpump whine and it's proven quiet to me. Only when I start to overclock a water setup will be beneficial because of how heatpipes work, but then you wouldn't be looking at an AIO but rather a custom water loop instead. So to me AIO solutions seem more like a computer nerd hipster thing than anything else, and yes I tried a Corsair H100i before I returned it for the Noctua above.
@RedSunFX4 жыл бұрын
I run a Dark Rock Pro 4 and I am also very happy with it. But here some other reasons I can think of, for using an AIO: If you want to use RGB RAM, you will be limited by the clearance of high end air coolers. If you travel with your PC alot, an AIO will be better for transportation. The heavier part is mounted with more screws to the case, while the air cooler puts all that weight on the mother board. If you travel on shaky road, you have a higher risk with an air cooler.
@joost11834 жыл бұрын

@@kenshinhimura9387 Yeah, but you are forgetting about air cooled Porsche engines. So air cooling isn't that bad but water cooling is a little higher performance in a more compact package. The thing is though, if my car leaks coolant it won't destroy it. If my computer does... different story. Higher risk and higher reward, but with more than enough performance air will do fine when not doing crazy overclocking. 2600k was running overclocked for decade.

@@joost1183 Are you saying that you do not hear the pump anymore at all or is it still an added audible factor over an air cooler? I've seen some of these videos. What I often see is that they don't do overclocking, but undervolt for better temperatures. Also, they show how it's not throttling in a gaming workload but don't recommend it for render machines. If I recall correctly, some small form factor cases have well thought out designs, so that every component can circulate their own air.
