Motherboards is the “trickiest” thing to buy for me at least, because I don’t often know at what point I am under/over buying. I try to follow your rule of spending about half the price of the CPU and seems to work. Right now I have a x370 pro gaming carbon I purchased when I built my 1700x. I installed a 3700x couple weeks ago and seems to work fine. Although Idk if a x370 was enough or too little for 3700x

First of all, you have to settle on a feature set that makes sense to your personal needs. Once you've found that motherboard that ticks all of the boxes, so to speak, be sure to buy that one and not the cheaper one that sacrifices any of the features that you need.

I agree completely on this I personally will not spend an extra penny on WiFi for my desktop (wires are more stable for gaming). Same goes for RGB. I don't understand the hole glass case fad just give me a well laid out case with good cooling with a metal side panel.

I rebuild my PC every 6 or so years, because that's usually where you see big leaps in performance worth the cost of fully upgrading a system, and I change out the GPU every 4 or so. This year, I built my first AMD system because the 3900x was too good to pass up. I paired that with a Gigabyte X570 Aorus Master board for $350. I know it's a bit overkill, but the quality just seemed to be there to last for years. Also changed over to a single 2TB nvme PCI-E 4 drive, the Sabrent Rocket 4.0. That drive cost more than the board haha. Kept my RTX 2080 as 2018 was my 4 year GPU refresh date.

When I researched my own system build, I settled on the Ryzen 7 3700X and ASRock X570 Steel Legend WiFi AX for a few reasons. 1. It had plenty of features that scaled well with the CPU I chose, 2. The motherboard wasn't skimping out on any features that would have prevented my CPU from going all out, and 3. The reviews off the motherboard were generally favorable to a system that would stand up against some usage. I didn't go for the Phantom Gaming X because realistically, it was just too expensive for a board that had nearly identical features to the Steel Legend, with some sacrifices that were negligible and wouldn't undercut the performance to value ratio. It was about a $250-275 motherboard, and honestly, it's performed well and supported everything admirably. You don't have to get the most expensive to get good stuff, but it does prove, spending a little more, will net you a little extra. Now I could have compromised with say an X570 Pro4 but honestly, at what expense and cost in the long run? I could have also gone with a B550, but again, to what expense and cost in the long run? Sometimes, you do get what you pay for, and you should draw the line somewhere.

I consulted a friend on his upgrade from an old H97 + i5-4690K to a B560 + i5-10400, he initially got the cheapest ASRock B560 board and it was unable to run a kit of b-die ram at XMP (3200 CL14-14-14-34). Even afterwards with lowered clocks and loosened timings it was giving errors in memtest. Then I find out cheap ASRock is general is bad with memory on recent intel platforms, he returned it and spent a little more on a B560 Aorus Pro, now XMP works with 0 errors. Really can't go wrong spending closer to the 200 dollar range vs the 100 range for a motherboard.

Hey, I (also) still have my i5-2500K, on an MSI "P67A-GD65" motherboard, with a RadeonHD 6870. It was the first computer I assembled myself. I had an R5 1600 on my ASUS "Prime X370-A" motherboard. I replaced it with a R7 3700X (two more cores than the 3600 - who knows what the future may bring?) after a BIOS update. It works fine, knock on wood. The 16 GB HyperX RGB RAM finally runs at 3200 MHz too, instead of 2666 MHz (with DOCP enabled). Instead of letting my R5 1600 collect dust (or selling it), I built a new computer for it just 3 days ago: with an ASRock "B450M-Pro4" motherboard, which I already own with a R3 3200G. I am having way too many computers :-)

One thing that motherboard shoppers often overlook is applicability/use case details, in particular, fan headers. Cheap boards often provide just two chassis fan headers, and they always seem to be in a silly place on the board. Splitters, hubs, and controllers can of course be employed, but they all add complexity needlessly. Make sure the board you select has enough headers and that their placement is sensible.

Real good point on the it's better to err on the side of over-buying than under-buying. The difference between the mid-range motherboard/GPU/CPU and the high end one (not highest end but crossing that line from bestest mid-range to most affordable high-end) is generally, what, $50-$200 depending on what's going on? I had my heart set on building a new computer with a 3070 RTX as the heart of the system. But now I'm thinking maybe a 3080 RTX might be the best bet. Maybe in a few months I'll catch the 4K bug and I'll spend the next 2-3 years (the time between buying new gaming pcs) languishing that I should have gone with the 3080.

I flat out 100% agree with "Don't Skimp Out On Your Motherboard". All ways buy a good quality motherboard from a brand name you can trust. You don't have to buy the top shelf motherboard but just don't buy that back alley special. That the type of thing that can bite you on the butt and give you more trouble then it's worth. Another piece of hardware you don't want to skimp out on is the power supply. All ways buy a good quality power supply from a brand name you can trust. You want a power supply that can deliver stable voltage while under load for multiple years.

Im somewhere in between balance vs performance and "future proofing". The way I see it, you could buy a mobo that is just enough for your cpu and then upgrade your mobo later when its time to upgrade the cpu. But in the end you would have bought 2 motherboards instead of 1 if you had just spend a little more on a board that could handle a few upgrades thus ending up costing less in the long run. At the same time you dont want to go too overkill because there will sooner or later come out new components that "forces" you to upgrade (ddr3 to 4 comes to mind, or pci4 slots for new gen gpus for example). Same principle with any other component really. Stay in the middleground, with something that will last a decent while but dont "future proof" more than max 5 years.

In may I got, 3900x with "high tier" B450 board. I hate noise and I wanted to avoid chipset fan. My goal wasn't to build, best PC for 5 years. My goal was to build a work/gaming machine that in good situation would be replaced in 2 years, but if things go side ways wouldn't hurt to keep for very long time. Based on reviews of the power delivery it seemed quite reliable board which is more important for work computer than bling. I would never get below 100$ board anymore, I couple of those have failed withing family right out of warranty . Now that I know better, I would say I would never go for cheapest boards for given Chipset, as those are probably going to cheap out on components that are required for reliability.

My son wants to move into Pc gaming from consoles so for his 14th birthday he asked if he could build his first PC ! His budget ( his money ) was around £800-£1000 ( $1000-$1300) which was for everything except a monitor. The MB and PSU / CPU where bought with upgrades in mind in three or four yrs when he starts college but I’m now wondering is the CPU good enough for a third gen 3070 GPU , given all the chat about the improvements they bring ! So I got an MSI x570-a Pro motherboard for my Ryzen 5 3600 CPU. What ultimately led me to buy that motherboard instead of the ASUS TUF GAMING X570-PLUS I was looking at was the simple fact that the ASUS one was 2500 SEK while the MSI one was about 2100 SEK AND they had an open but complete box of it leading to a further decrease in cost to about 1700 SEK leading to what amounts to almost 90 USD less. But anyway, the motherboard I got still cost about the same as the CPU (YMMW but this is in Sweden) but I made the choice of going for the x570 since it has PCIe 4.0 and I can put a Zen 3 CPU on it later if I feel like it. In a way I feel like I skimped on the motherboard, as I usually get something from ASUS or GB and with a few more features, but I also know I did pay a bit more for a slightly more basic card due to the X570 chipset so yeah :) It can overclock if I want, but nah, I'll just upgrade when I see a Zen 3 I like and can afford :) Oh, and the PSU was about 12% of the cost of the build, well 12% of everything except GPU because I went with what I had in my old one as a new one would add about 50% to the cost, at least :p Will get a newer one later when I can afford it haha. The PSU is just a 550W one, but it's a Seasonic FOCUS GX which is a nice one. IF, a big if, I end up getting anything really hungry as a GPU, which is doubtful since I'd need to get at least a 3080 to top the consumption of my current card and that just isn't happening :) Do note that Ryzen 5 3600 is about 235-240 USD in Sweden so yeah

The issue with the 2500k was that you could change the CPU but then the Intel policy went on that all second parts were end of line (i7s) and you couldn't get cheap CPU NEVER. Even until 8th gen and it will keep up with the 10th gen but at least you have up to 8 cores that are not end of the line... I might have made that mistake myself. I have Asus Tuf Z370 with an 8700K. I figured just drop a 9900K in it, to save hassle. Two problems have come up though. 1. It's not an enthusiast board so only has what's called a four-phase CPU power supply. Am not sure it will even run a 9900K at full clocks. I think it will, but it's unlikely to overclock a 9900K. 2. I recently discovered that this type of CPU four-phase power delivery may not work how I want. With the 8700K at full clocks, with a single core at 4.7GHz etc, it pulls 135W. The 9900K will pull way more. Also though if the CPU hits 77'C in e.g. Prime 95, it will power throttle the CPU to 95W. No other throttle kicks in, like VRM, temp, etc, just power throttle. It means I will have to pay a lot for a 9900K. Plus it might throttle unless I can fandangle the power throttle in the BIOS. The throttle will however drop the clock speed. In other words, if I can't work around it, a 9900K is money down the drain. On top of that a 9900K is not a good buy right now,. Luckily my 8700K is still powering on, and there is delidding and OC to do yet. Will have to delid for 8700K OC temps. (9900K delidding is a nightmare and I would not even bother.) Might be best to wait and upgrade, or howe to get lucky with 9900K temps.

It's also worth considering that, while you might not care about all the features today, maybe you will in a year or two. I mean, who doesn't like USB slots? You're gonna need several. Mouse, keyboard, headphones, that's three immediately. Having at least two PCI-e slots is also nice, same with m.2. My board has at least two m.2 slots, and they're ready to be used when I upgrade my drives.

Hello from the future! Really glad I had those extra m.2 drives because, as suspected, a time came when I was ready to upgrade! I realized earlier last month that the warranty on my harddrive went out. Uh oh. No biggie, right? Well, on my last two computers, guess which part failed first? You guessed it, the harddrive. I'm not even full on my 4tb drive, and it is statistically likely I will lose the drive before I fill it, at the rate I've been filling it over two years. So with black Friday, I decided to go big. I bought two SN 850Xs from WD, a 1tb to replace my WD Blue 500g SATA ssd, and a 2tb to replace my 4tb Seagate 7200 rpm HDD. Prepare for warp drive!

I Couldn't buy a Ryzen 5 3600 but wanted 8gb of Vram and DLSS so that the Graphics card will last longer. I Bought the Ryzen 3 3100 Becuase I knew The motherboard needed a bios update to get b550 ready for 5000 series and I am saving for a Ryzen 9 5900. The games I play is new games like Cyberpunk and other AAA games at 1080p 60fps high. But I also play old games like first tomb raider Games and assassins creed games. Also some racing games like F1 2018. Was the Ryzen 3 3100 a good idea since I just wanted to use it to start using pc and a ok CPU till I can afford the Ryzen 9 5900. btw 768p -900p at medium 50 fps is the lowest I will go till upgrading my graphics card.

Def true, although it's impossible to win/win with technology hehehe, went for the ROG Crosshair VIII Dark Hero wifi but should have aimed at slightly cheaper board cause soon after some improved/updated version will surely be available, in my case the Dark Hero so mid range X570 or higher end B550 could be a good choice, can even upgrade the mobo again without spending more in total so?? But again, should not cry over spilled milk and always number 2 in this game, hence never aim for those extreme boards unless LN2, famous overclockers often get them free through sponsorship anyways so? I overspent, have a tendency to do so, must get it under control and do myself a favor since not some extreme overclocker looking to squeeze out every single Mhz

Yeah. My only over-buy I regret was the 7990. The 870 Pro was overkill; I would have been fine with an Evo, but I don't regret getting it. It was my first SSD and I didn't fully trust them yet, and its run fine since then. (Even including the goofy incompatibility that my Z87 motherboard's onboard sata ports had with SSDs.) When I was building my current machine, I seriously considered a B450 motherboard, but the whole comparability complexity just made me not want to get into that ball of crazy, so I got a $200-250 X570. I'm rather glad I did, not the least of which being, in a couple of years when games are actually streaming from SSD's like the consoles will be, I've got a spare PCIE 4.0 slot for a drive that can really smoke.

The problem with Motherboard is that other then thinga like the chipset used wheter (X or B or whatever) and features like WiFi(which I don't need on a desktop becouse ethernet is better) it's hard to compare motgerboards there are no really specs for the quality of the components used and things like that and therr are often like 10+ motherboards from the same features, chipset and platform with no diffrence whatsoever in the specs other then the name and the price. Therr just no entry in the spec sheet thats tells you the quality of the components or whatever. Like what's the diffrence between a Prime Z-170 A (I know a bit outdated but that's what I currently have and it's just an example) and a ROG STRIX Z-170-(Insert Letter Here) with no wifi and same number of ports?

@@dom_m7879 even at 1440p the difference will be within 5% today. And as games become more gpu bottlenecked as they get more complex, that difference will likely shrink further. IF i were to buy a 3700X today for 259 bucks (MicroC), IMO it's not worth it to spend more than 175 bucks on the mobo. That's it. There are x570 and b-550 boards at that price and even a bit less. I don't agree with buying a top end cpu like the 3900x and then "FEEL" that I "NEED" to spend 200+ dollars on the board and 200 bucks for a "premium" nvme ssd (or whatever component) to "MATCH" the premium equipment used in my build. If it's compatible, it's compatible. You can build your system and upgrade it later. Saying that I "SHOULDN'T" pair one component with another ESPECIALLY when they are compatible is abhorrent. That's elitist talk and honestly the wrong philosophy. Targeting a balanced build is good, but sometimes you have to work with the budget and parts available at the time and make the best of it. If you know you wanted 8 cores and 16 threads to achieve parity with the next gen consoles but only have a thousand bucks to spend? Get the 115 dollar b550 with the 20 dollar discount and a 95 dollar ssd. DONE. All under a thousand bucks. BUT try to keep it under that price using tech's philosophy. AIN'T gonna happen. And i guarantee you will love your under thousand dollar PC with 8 cores a 5700xt, SSD and 16GB of 3200mhz ram for years to come (albeit without raytracing). Other than that love the new branching off. A channel needing this more does not exist with Tech's love of extra long rants. My 2 cents.
