Does Your Mazda Pop Out of 5th Gear? Heres How To Fix It Without Pulling The Transmission!

This video details the repair procedure of replacing 5th gear on almost all front wheel drive mazda transmissions. This applies to 1983-2009 5-speed Manual Transmissions
Please, Don't use the shifter has a hand rest when driving in 5th gear! This is what causes this problem.
This repair is done with the transmission in the car, and usually takes no longer than 1 hour.
You'll need a 10mm, Torque wrench, Hammer, Punch, and depending on transmission type, you'll need larger sockets between 1" and 1.5". Take your time, follow the video and please, ask any questions you may have.

years ago, had a roommate who parked his maz pu in the driveway, had to move it, floor jack to the diff, lift, roll, drop.. he blamed me for his 5th gear popping out while driving... huh? never heard that before... he wanted to sell it, so as a fix i got him a 4 speed shift knob and swapped it in under 2 minutes...FIXED!

If that is weldable aluminium , maybe run a bead around the shift fork . Gotta do what gotta do on obsolete parts . Another option maybe cast a new fork .

You mentioned changing the gear ratio on these, I have a 2006 Mazda 3 2.3L S Hatch, could I possibly get a taller 5th gear so I'm at lower RPM on the freeway for better gas mileage?

my mazda has a few problems... it sometimes goes into fith and other times is shows that its in but the car is in neutral still. ive had it pop out on me once as well. not sure if this a combo of sncros, and the shift fork as well. im confused if you get a transmission rebuilt how they can re use a shift fork if its facked? whats your thoughts on this

Any comments on why this failure occurs? Oiling? Bending? Wear due to the driver resting their hand on the shift knob like it was some kind of an armrest? Is it likely that any parts from a salvage yard will also have this issue?

What did you do to destake the nuts with the transmission still in the car. It doesn't seem like there is much room to swing a hammer there.

Turn the shafts so the staked park is at twelve o’clock so you have more room to destake them.

White Jesus those are designed a bit different. Will require trans removal and splitting the case. It’s usually a slider or fork issue.

Check your mounts front rear transmission and engine mounts could cause this to happen in all gears due to excessive movement.

Can't find 5th gear anymore. They don't make just the gear
