I built a small PC some years ago and use the bottom drawer of a file cabinet as a case. Just drilled some holes in the back for cords etc. Then screwed the Motherboard to the bottom of the drawer. Worked great, stayed somewhat clean. Lasted just as long as any other PC.

The real question: How does the dust compare to being in a computer case with the same treatment in your house? My house is a little dusty, which is why I ask. Also, I wonder how well the hard drive holds up to the vibration of the sub-woofer during use and how it will affect the longevity of the drive.

@Vierax I have that metal mesh at the intake rather than a modern dust filter and it keeps the dust and dirt particles at a minimum (and man, the house is a dust magnet). All that needs cleaning are the fans really. From personal experience what you need is something to block the dust on the pull/intake fans. The case has many air entrances including the side panel where I removed the fan and it is still clean.

built my pc nearly 4 months ago and was not prepared for GPU price increases at the time, so my last $100 or so i had to spend on my build went into the GPU leaving me with no money for a case, i then joked about leaving it in a cardboard box with IO cutouts and such, with a big sharpie drawn “PC” written on the side. i’ve used this box as my pc case since and have had no issues especially since my components are not the most power hungry (R5 1400 and an RX 560 4Gb) dust build up isn’t the biggest issue either however i have noticed it and occasionally i will get around to cleaning it. really interesting video paul keep it up 👍🏻

@@OutdoorkindaGuy one small thing i should also mention, is that after a couple of years having my pc like that, the very heavy CPU cooler, has the mobo slightly bent, which in extreme cases could cause undetectable mobo issues, so keep that in mind. Other than that, you might wanna purchase some cheap cable and a button to make your pc boot. Otherwise, you can do that with any metallic object. Just find the two pins with "PWR" or something similar on your mobo, and do use the metallic object to create contact between them. Be careful though, cause touching the wrong pins could cause issues.

Having a fanless power supply will not prevent dust buildup as dust will simply settle inside -- same goes for a totally fanless case with an open top grill. The best thing for controlling dust is very low- RPM filtered fans to create positive pressure (not an option without a case), using very dense filters, like Demciflex or Silverstone's densest filters, and then using a CompuCleaner or a DataVAC once a year or so to blow away the little dust that has gotten thru.

@QuantumBraced 6 жыл бұрын
For dust control, I strongly recommend Demciflex filters or Silverstone's FF123B (or 143B for 140mm) filters in combination with low RPM intake fans for positive pressure. These filters have ultrafine mesh -- it does let the tiniest particles thru over long periods of time, but those are very easy to blow away with something like a CompuCleaner once a year. Don't use compressed air -- that stuff is mostly useless. If you're serious about keeping your components pristine, invest in a DataVAC or CompuCleaner -- these have 500W+ motors inside and small nozzle attachments that can create insane air pressure and blow the dust out of anything, especially if it's all superfine dust from the aforementioned filters. I just cleaned my system after a year, and it literally looks brand new, no sign of dust anywhere.

I’m shocked quite literally that the magnet inside the subwoofer hasn’t completely destroyed your drives, motherboard, etc... I placed a computer too close to one of my old guitar half-stack amplifiers and it COMPLETELY destroyed everything in my old computer several years back. I don’t place ANY computer components near a speaker of any kind whatsoever and would NEVER recommend to set computer components or any computer near ANY large speakers EVER. I would definitely say to do so at your own risk of potential damage to your system or components. No offense but it’s definitely not worth destroying your equipment or the risk.

Every single PC case I've looked into, cheap or the most expensive ones, came up with the result that if you ever open the side panel, it helps a lot to cooling. So I was thinking to build one space case for a long time and hang it on my wall so it wouldn't take space on the desk or floor and I wouldn't have to worry about air flow of cases and spend unnecessarily expensive money on liquid cooling systems. But I was worried about dust accumulation and I've searched for the dust problems and you were the only one I see, not only talk about it but actually tested the setup and show the results. I knew the problem but now I see the problem with my eyes and I can seek a way to workaround because everybody knows dissasembling and reassembling PC for the cleaning is a time-consuming pain. Thank you.
@JonatasAdoM
@JonatasAdoM 2 жыл бұрын
Keep it inside the case and find a way to keep most of the dust out. Temperatures will be negligibly higher and you will only need to clean the dust accumulated on the fans inside without needing to take anything apart. Maybe the problem are too many fans pulling air out, this creating negative pressure that pulls air in from everywhere.
@Haplo-san
@Haplo-san 2 жыл бұрын
@@JonatasAdoM Hi. I have Cooler Master HAF XB cubic case. The day I build it in 2013, I ordered fans for every hole I can install; I even installed two small 80mm exhaust fans, since the case had slots for that. I only left the top slot open which I could install 200mm single fan but my third party CPU cooler was pretty high so there wasn't any space left for it to install. So I love fans and I like to fill the free slots. :D So as you say, I only need to clean dust accumulated fans but since it's horizontal motherboard build, even the simple fan cleaning is causing a pain; you can't work freely without removing motherboard tray because all the cable mess hides under the tray; which leads you to remove all the power and data cables connected to motherboard for work on anything. It's a good case actually, I never had a temp related issues so far but it's also too compact for my hands and fingers. Everytime I installed a new HDD, I had to remove motherboard to add new sata cables. Tho, it has two 5.25" (which I converted to 3.5" for my storage needs), two 3.5" and four 2.5" slots; you can't find that many harddrive slots nowadays if it's not expensive full towers like Sekira 500 etc. I didn't cleaned it for the past two years at least but it still looks good; most dusts accumulating on the fans rather than motherboard. And that's why I wanted a big space case. My main focus was to easy access on every hardware rather than neatly compactness so I don't have to dissassemble and reassemble anything when I want to add something new or just remove fans to clean. Also I ran out 3.5" HDD slots before my sata slots. So I have no other choice than removing 1 and 2 TB ones and add 4+ TB ones until I buy or build a new case. Would you like to also build one space case to hang on your wall? It could be amazing, really; so I could copy some ideas and learn from your mistakes, haha. :D

Hotwire the power switch (make sure you get the correct pins, then just cut the two wires and strip a bit off the end, touch the bare wires together to start the computer), put motherboard mounting screws in the bottom of a shelf (facing down means no dust), screw the PSU into the wall, SSD's can go anywhere with tape/glue/used bubblegum. Use an AMD APU and you only have one fan on the whole computer (not counting PSU).

I'm very sensitive to background noise and even a "quiet" fan or a HDD idling is very irritating to me.

I used to have a case but saw online the amount of people who had their pc's on a block of wood. I just use a bit of cardboard under my pc motherboard. It makes it so much easier to swap out components. It also gives amazing airflow and there is no bulky case to worry about. And In my very limited 12 foot by 12 foot room that's a big help! Also, regarding the PSU getting dusty, I have found the putting it on its side helps a great deal. But, thank you for the video. It was very interesting.

I've been running my PC without the side-panel on forever now because my temperatures are MUCH better with the side-panel off vs. on. This idea that "DUST" will be a big issue is total NONSENSE as well unless perhaps you keep your PC on the floor and never bother to dust it out. I personally keep an electric air blower right beside my PC and blow it out every morning before turning it on just for good measure. No dust issues for me just really cool temps and great performance. I do have plenty of fans running inside my case so that helps keep dust under control as well.

TotalInsanity4 Compressing it around the screwholes seems better to me than a motherboard flexing because it compresses and does not separate the single fibreglass layers. I am not a engineer, but i can see how a case would help... imagine a motherboard ever bending and twisting due to system temperature changes and with that stress on solder joints and internal connections.. someone should test it..

My wife designs "bed of nails" circuit board test equipment. She says circuit boards DO expand with very high heat like above a pool of liquid solder. But not during normal operation (and her testers do power-on-the-board testing). So I don't think the mounting screws are to hold things in place for thermal expansion so much as mechanical support.
@1pcfred
@1pcfred 6 жыл бұрын
If you keep the temperature constant thermal expansion is not an issue. The issue really is expansion and contraction cycling. He said he runs his PC 24/7. So that means his parts stay a fairly constant temperature too.

If I might add, if you live in an apartment on third floor or higher, and especially if you live by the road in an urban areas, absolutely do not leave your PC out like this, one time I left the window open when leaving for a week and had to get clumps of dust out of my keyboard and laptop fans... Can't imagine anything good happening to a full open motherboard in those conditions.

When i made my original HTPC i had a budget of $200 and so corners had to be cut, it had a a10-5800k and 8gb of ddr3. I drilled it straight into a piece of plywood so it would fit in the cubby underneath my tv. Later I upgraded it to a fx-6200 and a gtx 960 and drilled into the very same piece of wood and i didn't have any issues. The first computer ran for maybe a year and a half and the second about six months.

Here in Canada that would violate the RF and radio interference requirements from the radio telecommunication authority (The government). That is the primary reason for a case is to reduce EMI interference with communications. I had a neighbor that was a CB user. He had altered his radio for more power and every evening at 6pm he went on and had to listen to him for hours on my Radio. I filed a complaint and had an inspector come out to my house to investigate. He received a 10,000 fine and was ordered to take his transmitting tower down and to only use a in-modified transmitter.

That board had a power button on it. You could just short the power on header pins to start a PC too. But beyond test benching hardware not having a case for a running PC I do not think is wise. I would never do it. I was shaving pennies on my last build yet I still included a cheap case for everything. PC cases are purpose built boxes for hardware. They serve several useful functions. It is the minimum you can spend to protect your investment.

You should not need a reset function for normal operation. But if your PC ever gets into a completely unresponsive state you can just disconnect power from it momentarily to reset the system state. Also Power buttons often double as reset buttons if you just hold them in for a set time. Usually it is 2 seconds.

doesn't matter dude, this motherboard, Asus CROSSHAIR VI HERO, has all the buttons! Power, Reset, Safe boot, a retry button (?), on the back (IO panel) there's a BIOS FlashBack button and a Clear CMOS button. If you don't want a case, this board covers all your needs.

My only issue with running caseless is any plugs that are not 'currently' used need some covers, but beyond that dust is a reality inside cases as well (even cases with filters get dusty inside). Other than that if the board wasn't lying flat on the table it wouldn't have even a 1/4 of that amount of dust. Setting it in a way that the fans for the EVGA Vid board are on bottom, it would stay fairly clean. (Which is how I used to have my system before replacing it with an 'all in one' type (basically my computer is a laptop built in behind the 22" screen).

My brother had about 20 years ago the same idea and had an old outdated amiga run without it's case. While we were playing i mentioned, that it could be a bad idea. About 20 minutes later a loud cracking ended the amigas functionality. I took a look and found a damaged chip with a crack at the top and a few centimeters beside it was a minor drip of saliva. The "wet language" of my brother was enough to destroy it.

there are people that found that, their CASE were causing sttutering, because of front panel usb 2.0/3.0 others found that the LED-Lights from case were causing sttutering and so on (internal fans) so yup. Sometimes is better to built the pc from scratch 0 case involved, boot in Windows/Linux, do a benchmark test, check everything, play 1-2 hours games. Then built the pc into the CASE Re-DO Benchmarks Play games See if everything performs the same ,if does, then you has no problems. Also make you sure to invest money in Power conditioner + ups double conversion that will keep your computer components clean from (dirty emi-rfi- stuff.

See I was thinking about a thin cut piece of metal, like filing cabinet material, I guess 2 foot width and long enough for the motherboard to sit on, so you can screw it to the studs in the wall, right over a desk about a foot above the surface, connect the mother board to that piece of metal, drill holes where ever it needs screws and put the power supply and hard drives, right on the desk, any excess wiring can be stuffed between the desk and the wall

one does not "need" a case, but it absolutely protects the system from damage, dust, static, prevents one from dropping liquids on them etc. it can however offer the best cooling potential. I wish they made more of an open air style but still offers protection (no one really offers this) There are a few out there such as mining rigs that have numerous GPU or whatever (test benches) and many repair places just mount the motherboard on a chunk of wood. to each their own, not a bad idea at least for making sure everything works before mounting into a case, but, myself I rather protect my expensive computer parts and myself from freaking out when and if I damage it when the case is the least general cost compared to everything else. HDD has a moisture and temperature vent which if humidity is too high and dust manage to get on it, zzzzzapp. GPU of course sucking in dust or static CPU same thing more for esthetics and protection (as well as ability to keep all the wiring tucked away preventing accidental sucking in to fast moving fan blades which would not be good) dust can become static charged, even though PSU if properly grounded helps drain static, anything that is not fully grounded or whatever can build capacitive/inductive/resistive charges none of which are good things if in the wrong place at the wrong time let alone shortening the lifespan or preventing parts from running at proper temperatures (dust acts like a blanket afterall)

What a gigantic heat sink! Btw, although its possible to run a PC without case, I don't think it is a good idea because the case provide protection from the outside. e.g. impact to the harddisk, water to the mainboard. It also shield EM wave from the electronic when the PC is running.
