@Vierax I have that metal mesh at the intake rather than a modern dust filter and it keeps the dust and dirt particles at a minimum (and man, the house is a dust magnet). All that needs cleaning are the fans really. From personal experience what you need is something to block the dust on the pull/intake fans. The case has many air entrances including the side panel where I removed the fan and it is still clean.

Having a fanless power supply will not prevent dust buildup as dust will simply settle inside -- same goes for a totally fanless case with an open top grill. The best thing for controlling dust is very low- RPM filtered fans to create positive pressure (not an option without a case), using very dense filters, like Demciflex or Silverstone's densest filters, and then using a CompuCleaner or a DataVAC once a year or so to blow away the little dust that has gotten thru.

For dust control, I strongly recommend Demciflex filters or Silverstone's FF123B (or 143B for 140mm) filters in combination with low RPM intake fans for positive pressure. These filters have ultrafine mesh -- it does let the tiniest particles thru over long periods of time, but those are very easy to blow away with something like a CompuCleaner once a year. Don't use compressed air -- that stuff is mostly useless. If you're serious about keeping your components pristine, invest in a DataVAC or CompuCleaner -- these have 500W+ motors inside and small nozzle attachments that can create insane air pressure and blow the dust out of anything, especially if it's all superfine dust from the aforementioned filters. I just cleaned my system after a year, and it literally looks brand new, no sign of dust anywhere.

Every single PC case I've looked into, cheap or the most expensive ones, came up with the result that if you ever open the side panel, it helps a lot to cooling. So I was thinking to build one space case for a long time and hang it on my wall so it wouldn't take space on the desk or floor and I wouldn't have to worry about air flow of cases and spend unnecessarily expensive money on liquid cooling systems. But I was worried about dust accumulation and I've searched for the dust problems and you were the only one I see, not only talk about it but actually tested the setup and show the results. I knew the problem but now I see the problem with my eyes and I can seek a way to workaround because everybody knows dissasembling and reassembling PC for the cleaning is a time-consuming pain. Thank you.
@JonatasAdoM2 жыл бұрын
Keep it inside the case and find a way to keep most of the dust out. Temperatures will be negligibly higher and you will only need to clean the dust accumulated on the fans inside without needing to take anything apart. Maybe the problem are too many fans pulling air out, this creating negative pressure that pulls air in from everywhere.
@Haplo-san2 жыл бұрын
@@JonatasAdoM Hi. I have Cooler Master HAF XB cubic case. The day I build it in 2013, I ordered fans for every hole I can install; I even installed two small 80mm exhaust fans, since the case had slots for that. I only left the top slot open which I could install 200mm single fan but my third party CPU cooler was pretty high so there wasn't any space left for it to install. So I love fans and I like to fill the free slots. :D So as you say, I only need to clean dust accumulated fans but since it's horizontal motherboard build, even the simple fan cleaning is causing a pain; you can't work freely without removing motherboard tray because all the cable mess hides under the tray; which leads you to remove all the power and data cables connected to motherboard for work on anything. It's a good case actually, I never had a temp related issues so far but it's also too compact for my hands and fingers. Everytime I installed a new HDD, I had to remove motherboard to add new sata cables. Tho, it has two 5.25" (which I converted to 3.5" for my storage needs), two 3.5" and four 2.5" slots; you can't find that many harddrive slots nowadays if it's not expensive full towers like Sekira 500 etc. I didn't cleaned it for the past two years at least but it still looks good; most dusts accumulating on the fans rather than motherboard. And that's why I wanted a big space case. My main focus was to easy access on every hardware rather than neatly compactness so I don't have to dissassemble and reassemble anything when I want to add something new or just remove fans to clean. Also I ran out 3.5" HDD slots before my sata slots. So I have no other choice than removing 1 and 2 TB ones and add 4+ TB ones until I buy or build a new case. Would you like to also build one space case to hang on your wall? It could be amazing, really; so I could copy some ideas and learn from your mistakes, haha. :D

I've been running my PC without the side-panel on forever now because my temperatures are MUCH better with the side-panel off vs. on. This idea that "DUST" will be a big issue is total NONSENSE as well unless perhaps you keep your PC on the floor and never bother to dust it out. I personally keep an electric air blower right beside my PC and blow it out every morning before turning it on just for good measure. No dust issues for me just really cool temps and great performance. I do have plenty of fans running inside my case so that helps keep dust under control as well.

A case is recommended due to thermal expansion. The mounting screws are supposed to keep the mainboard in a somewhat stiff from to avoid cracking of copper traces or Solderjoints. I dont know how far not having a case will reduce the lifespan of the mainboard but it is something to keep mind.

That... Seems backwards... Wouldn't using screws to keep the mainboard compressed make cracking MORE likely?
@alexandramiller98876 жыл бұрын
TotalInsanity4 Compressing it around the screwholes seems better to me than a motherboard flexing because it compresses and does not separate the single fibreglass layers. I am not a engineer, but i can see how a case would help... imagine a motherboard ever bending and twisting due to system temperature changes and with that stress on solder joints and internal connections.. someone should test it..
@robertmcelfresh10316 жыл бұрын
My wife designs "bed of nails" circuit board test equipment. She says circuit boards DO expand with very high heat like above a pool of liquid solder. But not during normal operation (and her testers do power-on-the-board testing). So I don't think the mounting screws are to hold things in place for thermal expansion so much as mechanical support.
@1pcfred6 жыл бұрын
If you keep the temperature constant thermal expansion is not an issue. The issue really is expansion and contraction cycling. He said he runs his PC 24/7. So that means his parts stay a fairly constant temperature too.

Other than that if the board wasn't lying flat on the table it wouldn't have even a 1/4 of that amount of dust. Setting it in a way that the fans for the EVGA Vid board are on bottom, it would stay fairly clean. (Which is how I used to have my system before replacing it with an 'all in one' type (basically my computer is a laptop built in behind the 22" screen).

You want a case for better dust/dirt management, mobility and general safety. Do our bodies need skin and bones?

My brother had about 20 years ago the same idea and had an old outdated amiga run without it's case. While we were playing i mentioned, that it could be a bad idea. About 20 minutes later a loud cracking ended the amigas functionality. I took a look and found a damaged chip with a crack at the top and a few centimeters beside it was a minor drip of saliva. The "wet language" of my brother was enough to destroy it.

You make a joke, 11swallowedinthesea, but the thought that went through my head is "Paul must not have kids. See, kids often times have drinks. Kids often times are energetic. Kids are often not very coordinated. Kids are often times all three of these around things they should be nowhere near. And, we all know that energetic kids with drinks and no coordination are often attracted to expensive, unprotected electronics."
I say get rid of the carpeting while you're at it as that is where most of the dust will come from as it's trapped in the fibers. I tend to run a couple of builds without a case in my house and the dust isn't as bad.

exactly just take it outside and blow it off with the air hose, that's what i do, works great, cheap paint brush works good to finish it off, wipe it with a little WD 40 makes it look like new, then get a Thermaltake P3 open case and mount it to the wall, can get a maxed out corsair 650i psu for $79 the fan never turns, those digifanless are expensive

If you use your woofer a lot maybe it is NOT a good idea to have stuff on it, because of the vibrations it could harm your components and also things can eventually move and fall off! Especially the hard drives on the edge.

I also have an open computer (it has a plexiglass top and sides cover but two ends are open 14" wide 7" high, so plenty of air flow), and I also have carpets, I have a Honeywell 50250 Air purifier, and it is a life saver especially with allergies, and it takes out about 70% of dust in a living room space which is amazing.

My PC Runs Without a case since Christmas 2016, it just sits on its Motherboard Box, 2 HDDs in Top of each other and the psu is also just next to the Motherboard. I dont even have a Power Button... I use the the edge of an old ddr1 Module to Switch it on. Its my Old Core2Quad Setup from 2008 Still Running Great. 8gb OCZ Reaper HPC DDR2 1200Mhz, a Q9550 at 4.2Ghz, 10k Sata Drive for the OS with 320gb and a 1TB For Everything Else. As a Graphics Card it has a HD7950 from VTX3D, a tv Card for FM Radio, sattelite TV and Cable TV. And finally: Asus P5Q PRO as the Motherboard.

there are people that found that, their CASE were causing sttutering, because of front panel usb 2.0/3.0 others found that the LED-Lights from case were causing sttutering and so on (internal fans) so yup. Sometimes is better to built the pc from scratch 0 case involved, boot in Windows/Linux, do a benchmark test, check everything, play 1-2 hours games. Then built the pc into the CASE Re-DO Benchmarks Play games See if everything performs the same ,if does, then you has no problems. Also make you sure to invest money in Power conditioner + ups double conversion that will keep your computer components clean from (dirty emi-rfi- stuff.

In 1998 I was running a K-6 300, windows 98, duel monitors and running one of the biggest guilds on Diablo (1) without a case. Looked like all the rest of the parts laying around. Just a pile of parts that happened to be turned on.

I had a caseless PC pretty much like yours, completely open air, and over 8 months i did not have that much dust. maybe clean the living room once in a while :D
@Hebdomad76 жыл бұрын
No. You don't need a case. But having a box to put all your computer parts in helps keep things clean. As for using a compressor, you can get an inline dehumidifier for your air gun to keep the moisture down.

The thing is most htpc's get put into cheap cases without dustfilters or mitx cases that are so compact they leave the filters out to have better airflow. So basically not difference almost between a pc in a case and not.

So the lesson is: no you dont need a case? I must admit i always wondered if leaving off the side panel on my pc was worth the 12 degrees overall temperature drop. I mean the pc has never ran smoother & colder, but if too much dust makes it break down, then its now worth the price?

Paul, do you have a ceiling fan in your living room? I noticed I was getting dust build up in my office quite frequently after cleaning. I cleaned the fan blades on my ceiling fan and now I don't have to dust my desk and PC nearly as often.
@anv1826 жыл бұрын
For VGA I usually install MSI Afterburner and set the fan to only kick in after 60*C and build up to full speed at 70*C. that makes my setup run very silent on normal use

You can also use a cheap large paint brush with fine bristles to clean the larger areas quickly and it can also clean a large heat sink like his CPU one. Also qtips and alcohol are great for small areas like on small fan blades, it takes a while but give you outstanding results if you are meticulous.
@OneCosmic7496 жыл бұрын
Why did you not just used compressed air? Acompressor or a vacuum cleaner with blower function would clean this properly in 30 seconds.

This is the video I was looking for. Did he leave the bottom of the motherboard just sitting on the table? See I was thinking about a thin cut piece of metal, like filing cabinet material, I guess 2 foot width and long enough for the motherboard to sit on, so you can screw it to the studs in the wall, right over a desk about a foot above the surface, connect the mother board to that piece of metal, drill holes where ever it needs screws and put the power supply and hard drives, right on the desk, any excess wiring can be stuffed between the desk and the wall

one does not "need" a case, but it absolutely protects the system from damage, dust, static, prevents one from dropping liquids on them etc. it can however offer the best cooling potential. I wish they made more of an open air style but still offers protection (no one really offers this) There are a few out there such as mining rigs that have numerous GPU or whatever (test benches) and many repair places just mount the motherboard on a chunk of wood. to each their own, not a bad idea at least for making sure everything works before mounting into a case, but, myself I rather protect my expensive computer parts and myself from freaking out when and if I damage it when the case is the least general cost compared to everything else. HDD has a moisture and temperature vent which if humidity is too high and dust manage to get on it, zzzzzapp. GPU of course sucking in dust or static CPU same thing more for esthetics and protection (as well as ability to keep all the wiring tucked away preventing accidental sucking in to fast moving fan blades which would not be good) dust can become static charged, even though PSU if properly grounded helps drain static, anything that is not fully grounded or whatever can build capacitive/inductive/resistive charges none of which are good things if in the wrong place at the wrong time let alone shortening the lifespan or preventing parts from running at proper temperatures (dust acts like a blanket afterall)

I run a humidifier and there’s no dust near my open pc at all!!!! It’s a must if your not planning on using a case. It’s a hack no one knows but it’s common sense. Humidifier clears the air around you. And eliminates air moving around a certain spot.
@RayHoth6 жыл бұрын
Just a thought. You might not want to put electronics on top of a subwoofer which has a magnet in it. Especially if you run the sub at the same time as using the computer.
@nickshare68086 жыл бұрын
What a gigantic heat sink! Btw, although its possible to run a PC without case, I don't think it is a good idea because the case provide protection from the outside. e.g. impact to the harddisk, water to the mainboard. It also shield EM wave from the electronic when the PC is running.
