I am a little confused what you mean by actively piloting? You said you would "start actively piloting" in a turbulent situation. In my mind, you are AP'ing from the second you take off until you land. Does the term AP have a very specific meaning?
@ryan.hanthorn4 жыл бұрын
@@Robin-sc1lf This is just a term for when you have your hands on the breaks and are making constant active corrections to stabilize your flight. In smooth air you'll fly pretty straight and can stow the breaks maybe making minor weight shift adjustments; in more turbulent air you can get pitched around a lot maybe start an osculation or change directions unexpectedly. Actively monitoring and correcting for these deviations is active piloting.

I thought they were actual water skis at first. Snow skis ≠ waterskis. A pair of big, wide combo skis probably would have worked as he intended, but then how the hell do you launch with those? First video - dude gets dragged due to high wind. Gets assistance killing the wing. Then takes off his helmet while still connected to the wing. That's a good way to make a bad situation worse. Good rule of thumb: helmet and gloves go on before connecting to the wing, and stay on until you are no longer connected to the wing. Kudos to the pilots who are mature enough to leave ego at the door and turn mistakes into learning opportunities for themselves and others. It's a good trait for flying and life in general.

Another great video Tucker. I'm a delta wing trike pilot and was at the Salton sea fly in 08. There was a guy there that had at least 4 Whippets. They're basically smaller grey hounds. Very cool dogs, very friendly. The guy that owned them had converted a ppg trike with a mast to mount a tandem Wills hang glider wing. It was cool! Super, super nice guy! The guy would buzz it around on the edge of the landing zone without the wing and would go from one end of the fly in to the other. And these sweet dogs would run with their noses 1 foot from the prop! The first time I saw it I ran him down and told him. He said "yeah, we do it all the time"..... Sorry but there should be no unrestrained dogs or unrestrained little children at a fly in. A had my daughter Jennifer's little chihuahua at this same fly-in but she was never off a leash unless I had her in my arms. Can you imagine your dog with 1/3 of his snout? It would break my heart! That dog wasn't small and I hope it bit the pilots shoe or sock. Even a chihuahua latching onto your ankle will draw blood! This dog could inflict severe lacerations. Fly safe brother and if you ever want to fly N.E. AZ drop me a line. I'm in Holbrook Az. just 23 miles from the Petrified forest/ Painted desert. 39 miles from Meteor crater. You have to check out Canyon De Chelly. It's @ 65 miles away.Google it bro! Dave

Here’s one for you Tucker. I’m a very new pilot with only 11hrs to date, my 2 buddies and I that I met while taking training (we all 3 have our own rigs now) were meeting up at AZ Farms in Arizona early in the morning near where we all live. I’m 56 yrs old and have always considered myself in good shape, I’m not a runner but active in hiking, weight lifting, and I like to walk for exercise. On this morning there was zero wind, I’ve had many zero wind launches mostly during training and was always successful, I was all set up and ready to send it, so off I go. Running running, power power, full power and bam I pull my hamstring. I immediately let go of the throttle the minute It pulled, not consciously, but I think just subconsciously, and of course my next step my leg failed from the pulled hamstring witch cause a crash. Fortunately I hit the kill switch the minute I went down, but still nicked my prop on the ground and skinned up my leg and forearm pretty good. Part of my preflight now is to hydrate and some simple leg stretches. Oh, and I forgot to turn on the GoPro just before I launched, so no good footage.

Video #4 would be a great example of why I'd recommend para-motor peeps to cross train with flying small foil kites and/or learning to kite-board/kite-ski/kite-skate. You start to learn more about how objects like mountains and building's create rotor and also what I'd refer to as a wind shadow. Also, if you're in front of an incline with the wind headed up the incline then you might get sucked up and pushed up into the air by wind alone. (see crazy kite-boarding accidents) Essentially, conditions that you don't want for flying a kite or a para-motor, and in the case of video 4 make it seem like the wind is pretty docile when in reality it's not. My recommendation would to always attempt to stay away from mountains and tall objects when launching or landing if possible. Open fields seem to be a para-motor and kiter's best friend since it helps us both to gauge the wind better for our respective sports. Plus if you take up kite-boarding then when the wind is up and bad for para-motoring it may be good for kite-boarding. Also, like in the first video flying kites will help you acquire a muscle memory action of de-powering the kite in windy conditions.

The clip with the dog. I believe the dog tried to prevent the launch. Dogs are known to bite as last resort to stop a human from getting hurt- with hurtful consequences sometimes. The water ski clip: the ski went under and planted the pilot. When he tried to put weight on the ski he also unloaded the wing, so the collapse sank him even faster. The river launch with release of speed trim on reflex wing: the speed trim loosens completely the trailing edge, allowing it to flutter. It doesn’t not bring the leading edge down. The speed bar brings the leading edge down. So the speed trim requires wingtip for turning, hence the dual controls. Brakes are still operational however not recommended in high speed because they lock the trailing edge down thus cancelling the reflex effect of the trailing edge. So I believe the reason for pilot to trim for speed in haste was an attempt to overrun turbulent conditions and prevent the wind push towards the hill. Did he trim back for low speed ahead of landing? I missed that. He landed a bit fast and in a hurry, which is expected considering the scary flight.

Tommy in the tree makes me think of this bizarre phenomenon that is sorta similar that can strike someone on a motorcycle out of nowhere. For some reason, when people get on a bad path with a motorcycle, it's like the bike has a mind of its own and you see the telephone pole coming and you're thinking TURN TURN TURN! but like a damn magnet, the bike goes right for the pole or whatever it is. I did this my first week of owning my Harley with a mailbox. Every fiber of my being was shouting TURN YOU IDIOT and I was even leaning my upper body to the right but that doesn't work on a bike. You gotta look at where you want to go and your mind is telling you don't take your eyes off that mailbox so you can avoid it but if you keep looking at it you're going to go right at it. It's so strange.

Looking at the pilot taking off from the river bed. The biggest error here is his decision to take off in this spot. In moderate winds 10-15 knots. The turbulence from any structure will extend on average 1.5 time the height of the structure. This will increase the stronger the windage. As the wind hits the structure the air pressure will increase as it moves over or around it, not to mention roll around it. Taking off from the trailing side of a hill is highly dangerous. Also it’s not an area that you going to look at landing in ether. When you come in contact with land mark turbulence a sudden drop in altitude can put you in a really sticky situation.

People need to realize that each and every accident SHOULD be investigated to the fullest extent. You're dealing with flight here, and the reason the NTSB investigates every aircraft accident is so that the industry and the pilots can learn from the mistakes that were made. It's nothing to make fun of, it's pure knowledge that needs to be used.

Dogs know when their owners go flying and they want to go too. If you have a dog like Matt and Maria's doggie Lyla who is very well behaved around motors then it's ok to let them roam. But most need to be leashed around motors and props. Lyla has been up with Matt and loves to fly. I watch her when we all get together and fly. It's amazing to watch her reactions when either Matt or Maria come in for a landing. There could be 8 people in the air at any given moment landing and taking off but she knows when it's Matt or Maria landing. She can pick them out. And she always runs to greet them. It's uncanny. Glad that pup didn't hang on too long and get hurt bad.
