I've seen the poke in the neck work on many occasions. I volunteered at a rescue for several years and it was actually a small female dog that taught me that trick. I happened to have a large unruly puppy out for a walk with a small female dog. The female had a litter a while back, not recently. I believe it was because she had raised her own puppies, that she knew how to make this large puppy behave. She went at his neck with a hard poke, just a couple times, and had him under control. Dogs amaze me.

This is great Joel, thankyou for the thorough explanations. Pls do more teenager dominant pup (6-12 mths) videos as well, in Australia many families got puppies during the COVID lockdown and really need help with puppy issues esp. managing biting, jumping, leash pulling, digging etc. as we’re still in lockdown (since late June) puppies are not getting chances to socialise with other dogs nor are we able to get training/trainers to see our issues in person. Have tried all the positive reinforcement & treat strategies without much success.

I’ve started using that giving treats to my dog from the person who walks up to me when my dog is on the leash. Saw it in one of your other videos, as my dog isn’t confident sometimes and would growl, even though I know the person and we are exchanging friendly conversation. I didn’t think the behaviour would generalise like that, this has been a great learning for me. Thank you, I didn’t know how to work on this behaviour. So relieved, as it’s working.

I have a medium Australian Shepherd, a neutered male. He became more anxious and reactive to people after being neutered. He would bark at people when they came over. Now we use a high-value ball he loves when people come over. It seems like his anxiety is dissipated by playing fetch with the new person, but this can be obnoxious and so dog focused. He is on a leash at the start just to be safe.

Thanks for this video. I never had any conviction about guests feeding the dog treats because she also has some dominance issues and I didn't want her thinking guests were treat dispensers that she could still bully if they happened to not be delivering treats, but I've probably been shooting myself in the foot for a long time because she's extremely food motivated. I could easily see these strategies working for her, and easy to implement as well.

Very impressive! You can see the change in mind in this dog's face and body language. First time meeting you, growling, barking, teeth snapping... First time meeting Prince, ears back, eyes blown&fixed, "mean" face... To: open eyes, wagging back and tail, ears forward and interested, smelling and 'happy go lucky' with you all in the room, offering his playball to you. And those who say you don't do positive reinforcement are liars. This is the best example! But the difference is, that you still address and correct unwanted behavior, setting boundaries and limitations for the dog to live and react and be safe - and be happy! - in. And for the owners to copy. Great work!

My dog hates people but loves other dogs. I have a red heeler she is a mouthy breed and big ego. I chose a female dog to avoid dominance but she is the most stubborn and hard headed dog I have ever owned. She is also super intelligent.

I have two 3 year old Yorkies and one will come back when outside but the other will run away and come back later. I have a fenced yard so o don’t allow them outside without a leash. This is the first neighbor dog that barks every time I come outside. I can walk over give her a treat, pet her. Every single time. In backyard she barks. She’s extremely stressed in her yard, tail up, hair up and just by herself. Very insecure. First dog I met like this and that I haven’t won over

I had an neighbor's aggressive dog that I could only interact with through a chain link fence. I would stand about 10' back and reach my arms up to make myself tall. Then I'd just stand there and let the dog burn up all its energy and tear its throat barking as if I were Freddy Kruger (the dog had a whole yard to escape into). When it started getting tired/bored, I'd make a little jump motion and look it in the eye to start the whole process over while it was already tired. When I had time, we'd just keep going like that until the dog actually gave up hard enough to walk away. The first session took 20-30 minutes. It ended up taking a few such sessions (the owner was clearly negligent) but it got quicker each time. Eventually, we got it down to about 5 seconds. The dog would hear someone walking past in the front yard and come barking and running. But then it'd instantly droop its ears and tail and go back to the back yard as soon as it confirmed the noise was just a pedestrian.

Thank you. I have a 3 year old rescue who doesn’t like anyone comes to my house. I’m watching your great videos and learning/ changing my behaviour with him. Asked a trainer whose method is the same to help me! Hope I would fix the issue, biggest problem is, no matter how much I have to stay at work, I can’t have a dog walker to come to take him for walk. I tried to introduce him to the dog walker but he still goes to the room and guard there.

Hi Joel, one of my 4 dogs is like this dog, but only with guest dogs. I will be using this method the next time my niece and her two dogs, which this dog doesn’t like, come to visit. I wish there was a way to get more guest with dogs to visit so that I could work on this behavior with the dog more. Totally enjoyed the video and keep up the good work.

Did I understand correctly, that she walks him "5 times a week" and Joel is surprised by that?! Everytime I watch one of these "dog trainer shows" I am dazzled about people keeping their dogs only in their house (and maybe backyard) and dont walk them. To me that explains a lot of the behavioral issues some of these dogs have. In Germany kids who want to get a dog get told by the parents that "you will have to walk the dog 3 times a day - wether it is cold, snowy, rainy - and the first walk will be early in the morning before going to school". I never met a dog owner who doesn't walk his dog at least twice a day or uses a crate. And Prong Collars are forbidden by law.

I do not understand if Joel is surprised in a good or a bad way by 5 walks a week. Maybe this is a lot for a dog in USA? For a German I feel like this isnt enough. like you said I am walking my dog 3-5 times a day!

Yessah! Been waiting months for a session exactly like that. My dog is in the exact predicament. Lol...and so are we. I am the boss, walk/run/play ball/bike/swim him 9 times a week (no lie, 5 on weekdays and twice a day on weekends). High energy, high reactivity. Plenty of real life experiences along the way w/ other dogs, people outside, bikes, motorcycles, kids etc. I believe he needs the reset on the people coming over stimulus like you said. I would love to offer him up for a video, but I'm guessing Hawai'i is not close. I guess I need to find a trainer willing to try what you demonstrated. If you're ever in Hawai'i doing a "road show", I've got the dog content for you. Mahalo!

That’s great that you exercise your dog so well! Most people don’t. How much obedience, though? Exercise and exposure is all fine but if there’s no obedience and impulse control, that’s when you run into problems. Dogs need the obedience piece, as well.

Sit, stay, place, sit at gate/door before being motioned to come, loose leash walking right at my side, leave it, walking past dog charging up to the fence, cats, sit and stay when stimulus like motorcycles go by, sit and wait for break command, sit/come/touch/ for food, long leash come in open spaces, out when playing fetch/tug, etc. Any suggestions?

In touching the dog's neck, I wouldn't reach across the dog's nose to get to the other side of the neck (as shown at 3:00). Touch the side closest to you to reduce the biting trigger.

It is so interesting this video came up. My 16 month old GSD barked at my sister when she came by yesterday. I was able to send her to her place (she listened) and went but wanted to whine. But she stayed on her place the entire time. My sister was afraid but I have a divider that kept Luna out of my kitchen where my sister was. Luna goes to doggy day care and gets walked everyday but due to covid we can’t have people over like we did 2 years ago. So sad. I will use the desensitize method when my sister comes back.

This is my dog. He barks and growls and lunges. He would portably bite if I let him get close. He just turned 5 months which seems young to be growling and lunging at people.

A) Dog is a mix and the mix is guard-dog (can see it in his mouth, which is too wide for herding-dog). Behavior arises from that mix. Manic from herding, aggressive from guard. B) Treats soothe guard-dog side, but herd-dog side doesn't respond to treats. Herd-dog needs chase, rope-play or mental-stimulation. Could combine treat and play with a puzzle-treat, filled-Kong, etc.? C) That dog isn't exercised enough. Not physically and not mentally. Chuck-it tennis-ball thrower or frisbee 3-5 times a day for half-hour each. (more...) D) Always feed in a "maze" feeding bowl. E) Clicker-training wouldn't be wasted. Herding-dogs often respond better to clickers than to treats. And any training accomplished feeds dogs need for mental-stimulation.

@@solideomusical - That frantic look in a herding-dog's eyes when they are locked-up too long. The snapping nips too. Everything says that dog's wound-up too long without expending mental and physical energy. Give him a few sheep to herd for an hour and he'd be much more relaxed.

​@@fingersm - Leash-walking's important, but won't quell a herding-dog's need for focus. Ball is just a surrogate for herding. Dog wouldn't become more reactive after herding, then it won't be more reactive after chasing a ball for a half-hour either. What you're missing is the breeding. You generalize all dogs into the same little-box created in your minds. Your solutions work for the guard-dog side, but do nothing for the herding-dog side.

My dad has 2 rescue dogs labs and man were they abused...even after going there for years they would still come at me or anyone when i walked in the door....it took them 5 years to get used to me walking in the house ...needless to say my father was not prepared to house rescue abused dogs. i wish i had known about this channel years ago.

Teach the dog the "shut up" command. My 2.5 year old Aussie mix will not listen to my shut up command when she is outside. But when she is inside the house, she will obey. She knows I am her boss and her protector whenever she is inside. When she is outside, there is too much distraction because of the highway traffic. Also, when she is outside, she will constantly look around for moving objects, especially walking humans and bicycles. So, it is not just fear but also her extreme territorial behavior.

Wow this is great. We have a 2 year old rescue and have had him for a month. We have people over all the time. The shelter told us he shouldn’t meet anyone for like 3 weeks-a month but the 2nd day we had friends over and gave them all treats to hand him. He does pretty well but is a little protective and likes to nip. But he’s gotten better so thank you for this.

Would love to see you working more with this type of breed ( Border Collies) I have a 10 month old Border Collie and she is the reason I started watching KZbin videos on dog training. I have been around many many dogs but I have to say that Border Collies are special and very very different from other breeds. I didn't beleive it till I brought mine home. So I would love to see more videos of you working with this breed.

Well, in my experience, the treat stuff works with dogs that are very food motivated & coming from an excited mindset (and reacting because of that) rather than from an insecure/territorial mindset. How would you approach those dogs that won't care about any treats? 🧐
