Aggressive Golden Retriever?!? That's a first. I have never heard of a golden retriever being aggressive. Normally they are in their own world, and ignore every other dog. My niece has one and she's about 60lbs and long legged so she's a taller dog than the GR I had as a kid. I have a Lhasa Apso who LOVES to play and the GR just ignores her. It's so crazy for me to see an aggressive GR. I am trying to watch the video but I am distracted by these gray yoga pants..

Aggressive and reactive is not the same. A dog who lacks confidence and bites out of fear or nervousness is not an aggressive dog An overstimulated dog is also not an aggressive dog Think of the difference between a bar fight between two drunk people and a serial killer who lusts for blood or a criminal who doesn’t hesitate about erasing another person to achieve his goals. Or about first second and third degree murder. It’s not the same but it’s in that line, aggressive dogs are usually calm and may not even bark or show anything beyond their teeth, but they might snap at any moment. It is learned, not intuitive, often times by abuse or harassment by other dogs like stray dogs

Oh, "Fun Police", that's exactly my small (10kg) 12y crossbreed female 😄 She's a complicated case, her previous owner died and she went through tough times when I got her (serious breast cancer and broken pelvis), but in a very good shape now. Don't know details about her raising while young, but she spent 10 years mostly on her garden, meeting other dogs probably only through the fence (2 neighbors). I managed to train her at 10y from nothing to reliable obedience in 2 months, she's very smart (and quite attached now). Dog meetings were never a problem really if the other dog is at least a bit careful, she usually wants to meet and smell everyone (if I let her). But in many cases, 10-15s is enough and then she might start pulling out and do a muffled growl if the dog follows her to say "I've had enough of you". Most important though, she doesn't understand the dog play thing much and progress there has been slow. She was also protective of me at first. Although some remnants of that could still be seen, it's nowhere near what it was - but some of the behavior could stem from this. She can run around with other dogs, but it doesn't feel like play from her side. She ignores them mostly when we're on the move together with a pack, but sometimes runs after them to bark at them twice when we're stationary for a while and the dogs are playing. Especially to bigger ones. It's not like aggression, won't bite, looks like trying to scare them away. Some owners of young dogs even requested I let her "show them the boundaries" when they're too much, and that she's very good at. But only rarely we found a dog she truly enjoyed running with playfully. Getting her to play with other dogs, or at least tolerate their own rough and loud play, seems difficult, as she probably never really experienced this when young, or not nearly enough. Although it's not much of an issue if we're moving as a group, so might be still some protectiveness. I tried tons of desensitization and other stuff, also forcing her to be close to dog play while marking and correcting any negative reactions, but slow and steady seems to bear the most fruit. Recall is absolutely reliable, so I'm not concerned about her running into trouble 🙂

Thank you so much Mr. Beckman for the wealth of knowledge you provide in your videos. We have had Jack Russells for many years and really had a great deal of fun with them. We recently adopted a rescue puppy from a kill pen, 4 months old, rescue group stated he was a Rat Terrier, when he started growing ‘taller’ we had to find out what we were dealing with; DNA test revealed half German Shepard half poodle. A VERY reactive type dog and one that has presented different training issues. He is a bitter, jumper and your videos have been our life line. We have been to puppy training school, but he was too much for the instructor. We are making progress, but sure wish we lived closer. AGAIN, thank you

Hello, I am sooooo glad I found your channel. We are currently fostering a very friendly, but aggressive dog (Jasper) when he plays with our heeler/shepherd mix (Ollie). Jaspers play has slowly increased in aggressiveness as we have now had him for 2 months. We were hoping to adopt him. Last night Jasper and Ollies Play turned into a fight pretty quickly and Jasper wouldn't let go of Ollie when we finally got to him. Jasper is so stubborn and has no "give" when it comes to him being top dog. We have been working with Jasper on so many things and this is next on the list since it is now the most pressing issue. I just want to say thank you for posting your videos on how to help correct this behavior. I am starting today after work. Yes you picked up on something. Could be that he’s starting to pair muzzles with problem dogs so even when the dog is good he’s wary. Or it’s that he picked up on the dogs energy that I didn’t see.

10:56 The poodle changed excitement levels. You can see it giving eye contact to the golden and kinda blocking off its path. The golden responded with avoidance by looking the opposite way. His tail was still up which was probably indicating he would choose to fight if the poodle went futher. But no, the poodle decided to go away after the golden avoided in the brief moment.

Dominance means mean-mugging other dogs, excessive marking with scratches, trying to mount other dogs, just considering itself the bully of the playground,etc. Aggression is an intent(intent, not certainty) to hurt. Sometimes margins are thin between the 2.

My dog is a rescue Neutered lab Pitt mix who is 1 year 10 months old. He lived in a cage the last 10 months. I just got him Friday. He does extremely well on commands in the house. I’ve worked incessantly since the second we met. My problem is, the second I say “outside…sit…wait!” He does great until I open the door…..Booom…out he goes…pulling me with him. There is absolutely no control once we get outside! I cannot control him no matter what. Treat, his favorite toy, commands…he pulls with fierce brute strength. He pulled me so hard, he’s broken one finger and tore my bicep! He’s going to rip my arm off. How do I get control of this dog? I just subscribed!

One helpful thing is to do just door training, at a bedroom door multiple times a day where you aren’t even going for a walk. Dog is on leash, told sit, stay. You open door. If dog moves forward at all, dog corrected with NO, and leash pop, SIT, STAY, and door instantly shut. Do this over and over and over. Also do it before you head to your door to the outside multiple times each you head for your walk. Dog is only allowed through that door when it stays in the sit when you open door. When the dog successfully sits and stays, YOU go through the door. If dog gets up, same correction and you start over. If at any time a dog drags you through a door, it’s back inside for the dog. Doesn’t matter if you have to do it 10X. Consistency is KEY in dog training. Build time into your day for this several times a day. It won’t take long if you’re consistent with rapid corrections and not allowing the charging through the door. Time consuming, yes, but well worth the results. Also, put your dog’s leash on at random times during the day when you are not going for walks, so that the excitement level of the leash goes way down.

I have a 30lb dog and walk him using a harness w/ a ciip between the shoulder blades. Do you recommend using a front clip harness or a Martingale collar or a gentle leader for leash corrections? The reason I ask is because I had a large dog w/ laryngeal paralysis who had surgery, but eventually aspirated, got pneumonia, and eventually had to be put to sleep. (He had other health issues and was about 10.) I am paranoid about leash corrections using a collar on a smaller dog. Do you think this is a valid concern?

I get the progression and the "earn your way off" of each step. Once they dog makes it to say off leash/no muzzle w/ Prince; where do you start the next session? It’s quite a process and I hesitate to give complicated advice in the comments but here’s what I’ll say. Desensitization is the single most effective tool for dog aggression for the average person. Essentially the dogs being together(fences, crates) but not being together, is so important. The next step is more complicated but start there.

What a GREAT video! 2 points though. Why did she not hold the leash maybe she is weaker and he would be more aggressive? And I feel like dogs are smart and they know when they have the muzzle on. We were in the first phase and if he aggressed he was going to need a clear correction that I can only give. That correction was so important that I needed to have the leash a be ready. Plus her holding the leash was secondary because we had her pet her own dog while a bunch of dogs surrounded them, which is much more of a trigger than her holding the leash

The first muzzle was a cheapo one I bought from Amazon for this lesson. It didn’t fit correctly and that’s why he kept pawing at it. We eventually switched to a better one that they had at the facility and it worked much better :) and I loved watching him react positively when the group of dogs came up to him! It felt like a breakthrough moment and made me so happy ❤️

I am having a problem with my two females. They were both intact and we recently had one fixed. They were good with each other until the younger dog went through her second heat cycle. We chose to get them fixed to help with the aggression. I can have me Aussie out of the crate and come into the room with my German but not the other way around. I would like to get them both to the point of being out of the crate but I am nervous since there has been bloodshed. I would do ok with the German if she could come in the room with the Aussie if the Aussie is crated. Getting to that point would be a big step. How do I get there.

Great video! Why does it seem like my dog (10 month tibetan spaniel) only is reactive mainly towards timid/careful/“softer” dogs? He has met intact males and been best friends with them RIGHT away, and then there are others we walk past (not meet) on walks we’re he goes nuts.

The Retriever is VERY imprinted on humans. You can see the dog needs constant assurance from the humans. Joel projects confidence and maintains "emotional" distance. I think the retriever is confused and feels compelled to insert itself in the dominance heirachy because its owners fail to do so.

I once owned two golden retrievers, as a breed they are besotted with the human race. Ours had lost a lot of 'doggyness', they preferred not to mix with other dogs, they didn't scratch the soil after peeing. The boy often didn't cock his leg. A very different breed - very focussed on humans. We now have a lab who is much more self assured and sees his relationship with dogs as HIS business. He knows I won't rush in and help him when he's challenged by bolder dogs - so he has to learn to fit in when forming a temporary pack at the beach. Our retrievers were so gooey they'd often feel they had to police other dogs to ensure the other dogs didn't take liberties with us. We were at or below the retriever's status in the hierarchy. With the lab I assert my position in my relationship, he's so much less mushy. Clear boundaries about furniture, coming into the house is a treat. My partner has spoiled him somewhat (he's allowed on the furniture now) and you can see he's constantly testing for confirmation that he is NOT in charge by challenging rules every now and then.

Really enjoying these videos. Appreciate putting all of these situations together for us. Do you have any advice or how-to's on introducing puppies/dogs to cats? Looked around and only saw introducing a puppy to a dog. Thanks!

I was terrified with my American Staffy meeting my cats in which I have 4 cats in the house but I used baby gates I let my pup sniff the cats watch them and desensitised the dog to them,I would just move the gates around the house & always have an area where the cats know they can run n hide & dog can’t get to them ever It’s now a year later & my staffy sleeps with the cats at night but she still likes to chase them ( for fun) at certain times of the day Again make sure cats have an escape route in case they are not in the mood to be jumped on by playful dog who thinks the cats are puppies Hope this helps

I had a huge problem with my small dog and big dog and they would fight over food and they hates each other it took 2 weeks to get them to get along and now they are inseparable

Hey. do you have any videos or suggestions about my problem? I would like to train my dog but she still have 6-7 hours of free time alone with my other dog at home in the yard. Do you think it ruins my training by letting her "choose by herself" for most of the day and then she does whatever she feels like when I go for work.. thank you I LOVE your videos. Yes. I'd never leave my dog outside unattended that long. I'd be afraid of a dog fight, them getting out, getting into something, or getting stolen. But that's just me. 🤔

I agree with the first comment... I've got pitbulls myself, so I could NEVER leave them together unattended. I've made that mistake before when I was young and it ended horribly 😞 When dogs REALLY go at it, they'll kill eachother! Even a fenced in yard isn't guaranteed to stop a determined dog from escaping either. I've got dog's that can easily clear a 12-15ft wall if they feel like it..

I thought it’s bad to correct a dogs growl, like it’s their way of communication if saying they’re not comfortable in the situation. And if we correct growls then it can become dangerous where the dog will stop growling and just nip or bite without warning. Am I wrong? Or did I miss something?

I think people should have to take classes and tests before owning a dog, especially powerful dogs.

Also we in UK have some restrictions about tools we can use to traine dogs but with your method a rope will do the job

Our 1.5 year old Shiba Inu has been doing significantly better with loose leash walking after following your training. We're trying to work on the dog-to-dog aggression too. His instinct whenever he sees a dog he really doesn't like (even from a distance) is to bite me on the leg with full force, which often draws blood. Besides incorporating a muzzle into our walks, any additional advice you can offer?

I would have given a leash “pop” while waking him away, then told her to pet Prince more. It’s an important that a dog understands that their “mommy” can pet whoever she likes. The dog is rarely protecting the owner but rather is resource guarding the owner.
