I find that using STRETCHY velcro is a MUST! Up here in Alaska, when pups are out in the mountains and deeper snow, the stretchy velcro really holds the bootie on, even when frozen and full of snow. I've made booties with the regular, 2 sided velcro and it won't hold when frozen.

I used an old umbrella for the waterproofing part of the boots. They are cheap at the thrift stores and yard sales. There are some really cute designs.

some of the fleece, I have acquired the same way, used pajamas old hoodies. I found getting the actual fabric and vinyl can be a bit costly. I am all about re-purposing things

When you stitch the umbrella fabric, how to you waterproof the stitch holes? I do make completely waterproof boots for the vet clinic that I work for and will do a video on that ASAP

I use this pattern to make Cordura dog boots and instead of sewing the tread onto the outside I sew fleece to the inside of the pad area of the boot. Gives the dog a little insulation from the cold of the sidewalk. The boots stay water resistant for about one winter. They work pretty good in the salty slop. Thanks PetPrepper for posting.

I just saw this comment now, so sorry. I am so glad the boots worked for you. I think this is one of my proudest whatevers of my life. I don't sell them over the internet as people don't know what size they need, I don't sell them in person unless there is a custom fitting and I can educate the client, but I wanted people to know how to save their not only dogs feet, but money. The response I get from this video is more than anyone could ask for, thank you so much. You made my day

"if you have old leather pants from the 80's, please use them! you can cut them up and use them, it would be awesome; we would all appreciate it", lol. Love this line. Thank you so much for sharing this. I've been looking for dog boots online, and not willing to pay $100USD for boots that MIGHT work. I don't sew, but this seems very simple. The hardest part for me was trying to figure out how much fabric to buy. I wish someone here carried the "toughtek", but I'll do my best. I live in Canada (the Prairie's)and it's been -40 C for the past 2 weeks (no, not all of Canada is this cold all the time), and my poor dog hasn't had her walks. Like Minnesota, the ice, snow, and cold sidewalks are too much. Cheers!

Even made a drying rack for them... a piece of wood from Home Depot's throw-away bin and some wood pegs hammered into drilled holes...voila! Thank you for your "How to make dog boots" video. We've made five pairs using your pattern and sizing guidelines with excellent results. We live in Arizona; the pavements get hot and there's lots of dust and dirt. We also treated the fleece with Nikwax Polar Proof fabric water repellent; it works great for morning dew and after a rain. The boots have made it possible for me to take Gia (my Havanese) to more places and revisit parks we avoided because of the challenging surfaces. Wishing you much continued success, J and G

I am waiting for my new sewing machine, Brother Runway CS5055PRW. I am a guy, but our border collie needs boots and a coat! My wife thinks I'm losing it, lol. I bought some decent ones from someone from Alaska but they fell off and more or less fell apart. The fabric was polyester like a raincoat and not fleece. I would think fleece would get wet in a hurry. The winter is pretty tough here in New England. I don't even know how to use a machine but I figure if little girls can do it then so can I! I really want to learn how to do stuff with the machine; it's something I should have learned many years ago. I appreciate your time, your video was pretty easy to understand. Michaels store is very close to my house. I've got a mountain of stuff to learn. There are a lot of dogs around here maybe I could get a side gig going. Thank you.

+dontswin First there are a lot of sewing vids on here look at all of them even ones that don't seem to work for you, their mistakes can save you money. If you have a small to mid sized dog go to second hand stores to get baby and childrens clothes look at how they go together you can do almost any seam with a regular sewing machine buy a double needle if your machine does not come with one you are getting a Brother it should come with one. Second there are a lot of patterns for free on Google look for them. Last you can make waterproof dog shoes look for videos. Real fleece will not wet through if it is polar fleece not that thin stuff they use to make blankets out of. You can also use felted wool and you can sew elastic ties instead of hook and loop tape. I make dog coats for my J R from baby clothes all I do is sew the neck a little on the back usually where the tag would be and sew new seams or darts up the side. For baby clothes that have legs i split the seam between the legs and put them on backwards but for jackets I sew up the back and then just zip it up part way and put it over his head push it down a bit so I can get his front legs in the sleeves and he goes outside no problem. The hood never goes all the way on his head I have not solved this yet. I have taken some off and added elastic ties to them they fit okay then.

Question. I live in Las Vegas and see so many ( dumb) people are walking their dogs in high temperatures. So high the dogs feet can burn, What kind of fabric can be used instead of fleece?? Fleece seems too hot for over tripple digit weather. I saw two dogs crying and trying to pick up their paws off the concrete, it made me so angry. A man was walking with his dogs (I think he was homeless) if I can educate people here and passout free booties id feel like I was helping more animals.thank you for your videos

Loves to work I am not quite sure, I am dealing with temps of up to 50 below, so that is what I am focused on. What I do know is dogs sweat from the pads of their feet, so I would say something that could absorb the moisture collected. T-shirt fabric would be great other than the fact that it wouldn't hold up. I am at a loss, sorry
@BadKittyNoMilk9 жыл бұрын
Thank you. Both extremes are good to know about and 50 bellow.... yikes.
@PetPrepper9 жыл бұрын
I honestly don't know what to tell you, I am fighting with people here who leave their dogs outside all winter in 50+ below temps. I haven't even had time to discover fabric for your climate. I would assume that cotton T-shirt fabric and the suede would do it, but dogs only sweat from the bottom of their feet not the top, so fleece should work just fine as it stretches, but doesn't stretch too much, like the t-shirt fab would
@squeakymcmurdo9 жыл бұрын
fleece is supposed to work as an insulayor in that it keeps the temperature against the body the same, so will keep the heat out as well as cold. Wool is the same way (and is what fleece is trying to mimic) but is cost prohibitive, but maybe you could find some thrift store wool jackets to cut up
@PetPrepper9 жыл бұрын
It would have to be something that stretches, so I would say cotton t-shirt fabric. But it wouldn't last nearly as long in the toenail area as the fleece does. Either way,t he bottoms need to be reinforced with suede or leather and that is where dogs sweat, so it really doesn't matter what you have on the rest of the foot. You are blocking or absorbing the sweat on the pads either way. Fleece isn't a bad thing, it will just last longer than the cotton

I live in AZ, in the tristate area (CA, AZ, NV) and it gets to 120 deg plus in summer! I think I will try a layer of Insul Brite (like I use for oven mits) between the suede and fleece for insulation. It isn't too bulky, so I hope it works. Just waiting for the suede and narrow double wrap hook and loop from Amazon. I would also like to make "suspenders" of some sort to keep the booties secure or we may be scouring our large yard for booties! Our girls are couch potatoes, but we have crushed stone and a lot of concrete around our small pool. The girls like to sunbathe on the concrete, but they are both seniors now and a lot more sensitive than before. Thanks for your tutorial! I have made a lot of things over the years (snow machine upholstery, bay window cushions, curtains, drapes, clothing, and more), but your instructions boiled it down so I didn't have to reinvent the wheel. Thank you.

These are great! I just made a front pair for my Bichon/Shi Tzu mix, and they are soft, stay on and are VERY easy to put on. They did not bother him at all like others I have bought for him. Will make the other two now. I used a felted wool sweater for the uppers and some coated lightweight canvas stuff for the soles. Thank you so much. I have struggled for a long time to find something that works for him. His little feet would get so cold outside in the snow that he would jump into my arms to get out of the snow! EASY to make, and comfy for the dog.

Thanks for this because I have a service dog prospect and I realized if he's going to be out and about with me he needs foot protection, and his pads get dry and cracked so he doesn't have great traction on our wood floors and tends to slippery around when he gets excited, so I wanted to make him dog boots since I don't have much money to spend on ones from Ruffwear. Thank you for the video.

Omg I'm so thankful that you showed this I have a service dog that NEEDS dog boots for every season. I am going to make a few modifications like thicker soles and and making it water proof all the way around but trust me its much better to spend like $10 and be able to make 5 pairs or more of boots then to spend $30 for one pair Edit also I can choose how far up I want them to go since most boots sold cover too much for my liking (it looks uncomfortable for my dog) I can cover just the paw and make them diffent sizes for the front and back feet. Thank you so much honestly its a simple design and I think my dog will appreciate them this summer when her feet would otherwise be burning up.

There is no pain so want to keep her from causing her nail and toes to bleed as she drags her foot. She still loves to go for walks so need to make it easier on her body. I am using denim and faux suede for 90+ summer time heat. I put a circle on the foot pad and 1/2 circle on the toe where she drags it on the concrete. I may be looking for something more durable, but this is what I have at home.

If you don't have a sewing machine, Use fabric glue and sew it by hand. The fabric glue will only help to reinforce your hand stitches just in case they aren't the best. This is such an easy and small project, I feel it most certainly could be done by hand! Thread and needle! LOL Go to any fabric store--get thread, needle, glue and fabric remnants if you don't have any old shirts made out of fleece. AND I want to say THANK-YOU so much for the video! I'm making mine with light weight denim and and non slip material added to bottom. I going to make a pair then decide if to add both leather and non slip material. The first pair I'm making is for an English Golden Retriever that has both hip and elbow dysplasia. We have all hardwood floors. He slides so much and it's obvious it causes him pain. This is summer. I will certainly make him some with heavy fleece this winter!

Thanks so much for the video! I do not sew much, but I made 2 pairs of your boots last night and they turned out great! I can not thank you enough for the video and for adding the measurements with the dogs weight groups. That was a huge help. I am involved with animal rescue and have 6 dogs myself, 3 of my dogs have bad knees and one my dogs legs were buckling under her when temperatures were in the single digits and below. She is a dog that doesn't like to be messed with and even runs away scared when i try to wipe her back off when she is wet. I made her boots yesterday and she let me put them on!!! It was on 4º out last night and for the first time all winter she was able to stay outside longer than a minute to do her business. This winter has been harsh in PA with temps hitting -15 at times and as you know most dogs just can't handle it. One of the pairs I made yesterday was for my moms small 15 lb dog who hates the cold and sometimes won't go number 2 for a day or two because of the weather. I put the boots on him last night and he ran all around the hard. He kicked up his feet just like your dog did in the other boot video and THEY STAYED ON!! We have tried so many different boots for him, the only thing that worked before this was buying a pair of dog socks at petsmart, sometimes they would stay on his feet the whole time he was outside which was 3 to 5 mins.. other times he would lose one or two . He wore them twice now and both times they stayed on.. So thank you thank you thank you. I was wondering if you could post where you buy your velcro at? I can not find a large roll at my local micheals or joann's fabric. I tried to google velcro one wrap but having a hard time finding all 3 sizes. Also where do you buy your suede at? I bought a piece of suede at my local Joann's fabric and it is fraying. I did go over the end with a zig zag stich and then 2 other straight stitches but i notice its still fraying. All the faux suede at my local Joann's fabric is very thin and it looks like its going to fray. Thats the only store in my town that sales fabric and I dont know of any other fabric stores outside my town. Tonight i looked on like to see if i can order faux suede, which of course i can, but the problem is i can't tell how thick it is or if it will fray. my last question is how do you give each dog a custom fix? I may try to sale some in the future, but I am not really sure how you go about making them custom for each and every dog. I hope i didnt ask the same questions that you get asked all the time.. i tried to read all the comments but their are just to many to read through.

I think and hope the link for the one wrap velcro as I think is in the Description box was there is still there, I have a dying mother and do not have time to look it up but I think it is Velcro USA or something, I have always purchased the "Suede" at Joanne on the remanant shelf so don't know what it is since they don't list it, I have learned this past year that they will not be selling it anylonger as it is not a big seller. I beg to differ, but I must not be that big LOL. Last question, I have been making these for many many years and just use the chart I go by. I wish you well and hope you are able to help many dogs out there. There are many big companies pissed at me for doing that video, but I pretty much have to say I sleep better at night than they do

I have a 6 month old brindle pit/boxer mix. She's my little girl. But she refuses to let me trim her nails. I'm taking her to the vet next month. But in the time being I want to make some boots for her to wear. Because I'm afraid she might break a nail, and I know it would hurt a lot. Plus she has very sharp nails, and I don't want her to scratch anyone. I'm totally going to be trying your method here. Thanks :) from us both.

That is great!! I bought some rubber dog boots and she hates them. Also hard for her to walk in them. I had cloth ones from my other dog that has now passed and my dog is ok with them,,,,softer. They have now worn out. So I am very happy to try these. My dog constantly chews her paws, due to the salt! I’m not sure what size to make her. She is a Schnauzer and is 17 pounds.

Sorry about the delayed reply, the approximate sizes are in the description box below

If I am correct the larger of the 2 is about 110 lbs? I would start with 51/2 by 8 and sew your way down as needed. The smaller 88lbs? 5x7 It is difficult without being able to see the dog to get the sizes just right, hope this helps

Thank you so much for this awesome tutorial and tips!!! Your instructions, measurements and demos helped me quickly make a set of these boots for my puppy and my adult dog. We went from 55 degrees and green grass to several inches of snow, 10 degree air temps and -15 to -25 degree wind chills in a matter of about 30 hours. Their little paws could not take it! The boots I made fit like a GLOVE and work super well!!! My puppy didn't like them until she got out in the snow to do her business, and then I think she was glad to have them. I have an older Rat Terrier that has had issues with his paws freezing the last couple of brutal winters in Michigan. I've tried three sets of VERY costly commercially made boots - they were ALL terrible. They were too stiff and he literally couldn't walk with them on, or they didn't stay on his paws. He doesn't exactly like these, but he will at least walk in them. :) I am one very happy dog momma. Thank you for such clear/concise instructions (and the vid demonstrating how to fit them as well). Peace xx

PetPrepper I don't usually leave comments, but I wanted to make sure you received some positive feedback and appreciation because it's well-deserved. I am so thankful you shared your knowledge and pattern. We've now had many successful trips out to potty with happy feet! :) Without your videos, I may have made another costly purchase for a less-than-superior product because we were getting desperate. It's no fun to take your pup out to potty and have them whining and crying after just 30 seconds in the snow because their feet hurt them so bad. You're a life saver! You didn't have to share this info, but you did and we appreciate you greatly. Thank you again!!!

Dana Eskes Wow, that made me feel so good, thank you. I am sooooo happy these are working out for you. I have had a couple negative messages from bigger companies about this video and I frankly don't care. I don't sell them over the internet because I can't get a perfect fit, I don't let merchants sell them that don't agree to doing a custom fit and I think that is only right. People need to be happy with products that they are buying. I put this video up in hopes that I could help a couple people. It is one of my number one videos and I am seeing some kick back from it, which I didn't expect. Good thing happen, right?

I'm very proud of my pets, I have a husky baby girl, a one year old rottweiler and a beautiful cat. They get very happy when I make them things. When my rottweiler get a new toy the fun is to see how fast he can make 1,000 little pieces. So he star by the legs he eats legs and arms of the toys. He leave the head so I get my old jeans and make a body for the toy. It looks cool and he love to watch me making it. He play with them and it takes him for ever to break them. Because he don't want to hurt my feelings of because he love that I make them. When my husband comes from work he gets the toy and show him he got a new toy. Anyway he was watching me make the boots but I made them too little. I think he got sad. I need to get more velcro and get leather material. Lol I use one of my expensive purse. Thanks for taking the time to do the video.

@sherryfraser260911 жыл бұрын
We made these for dogs in the Yukon Quest and the Iditarod Dog Sled Races in Alaska. If you walk your dog a lot in snow their paws get cut up from the ice that gathers between the pads. Not to mention the sub zero weather. Mushers take better care of the dog then themselves. They take care of the dogs paws religiously. So should you. Claws will work themselves thru the fabric eventually. Thanks for the video!!

OMG!! I’ve been on Amazon and all of the pet store websites trying to find some thing for my miniature dachshund! She has had some sort of crazy paw & pad swelling our vet couldn’t even pinpoint. Yesterday the swelling was in between her toes and her paw was twice its normal size! They didn’t have her size cone of shame so I’ve been waiting on that to come in. In the meantime, her OCD nature has made it impossible to keep her from licking constantly. I thought I was going to have to spend $25 or more for one bootie but you saved the day! IDK why I didn’t think to make it myself to begin with especially since I have a craft / sewing room Stocked as well as any craft store. Thank you again! The name of your channel has me intrigued so I can’t wait to check out some of your other videos!

@PetPrepper10 жыл бұрын
Patty Wykes You can cut a square of one of them and try fit it to the dog so when it is strapped tight enough, the other will wrap around the leg, but you can't sew the velcro all around the top of the boot as it will not stretch. Can you return the velcro? I am sure you won't be happy with the way they turn out otherwise

I really appreciate your tutorial! Now I need to find a way to make some waterproof version of the booties, to put on my dogs when my yard is wet and muddy so I don't have to clean them off when they come in! I ordered some very water-resistant fabric from Seattle Fabrics (great source for outdoor fabrics like top quality fleece) but may take me a few attempts to solve issues like leaking from the seams, etc.

Thank you for your wonderful tutorial!! My creative juices are flowing!! Our 20lb Charlie had an FCE 4 years ago (stroke of the spine). He was totally paralyzed but regained use of three legs thanks to hydrotherapy and acupuncture. We opted to amputate the leg that didn't recover (front left) as he was just dragging it. As a tripawd, there are other challenges. Traction is an issue. He can't easily negotiate slippery surfaces. We found 'Pawz' rubber boots. They provide tremendous traction BUT the fabric doesn't 'breathe' and can't be left on for a long time. I'm going to try making these boots using a rubberized fabric on the bottom. (Maybe try the gripping shelf liner type material). My sewing machine is whimpy, but will hopefully be able to sew thru the thickness. It might turn out to be an awesome boot he can keep on for lengthy periods!! Thank you again!!!

+c nagorski Or dip the bottom in that product made to dip tool handles in. I had a family member pass today, so my brain is fried and can't think of the name of it. Otherwise Tough Tek makes a rubber fabric type thing-a-ma-jobber that you can sew and it is amazing. That is all I have for now, hope it helps

The reason I am interested in getting dog boots is that my dog licks his paws every time he returns from walking and running in the back yard. The vet stated that Zeus (my pet) is probably allergic to something on the ground. The vet stated it was okay to give Zeus half a pill of the Benadryl. I don't agree with giving my dog Benadryl, so I thought maybe I can make or buy him booties to wear when he goes out in the back yard and this will hopefully prevent him from licking his paws.

I will be making these dog boots. Thank You for the video. Why on earth would I be making them...that's a very easy answer. I have a mini poodle and I live in N.Y., the snow sticks to her fur like glue and is very painful for her to get the snow off. She hates the hair dryer to try to get the snow off, she hates her little paws wrapped in a warm towel from the dryer...next to impossoble to get it off, plus, we get a lot of snow and our winters are long. I feel so terrible for her. This is the reason I'm making the boots for her. Animals have feelings too and she is Highly babied. I hate seeing her with clumps of snow on her little paws. Thank You So Much for the pattern. With Much Love, Gwen ~ God Bless ~

Thank you so much for this instructional video! I made a pair and we will try them tomorrow. We walk anywhere from 2 to 5 miles everyday. I've been worried about Holly's feet. I bought a pair from the pet store and they just don't fit right. I made a pair following you directions and they fit great. I did add a little to the patter. I took the ribbed part of some baby socks and sewed to the top. We walk on the bike trail and the snow get a little deep on the sides. The other boots I bought kept getting snow down in them and coming half way off. I'm really looking forward to trying the ones that I made. I don't think Holly was too impress because I kept trying them on her to make sure the size was right. :) Thanks again!

They worked great as far as the fit and staying on! I need to find a more durable material though and trim her nails :) And maybe something more water proof. But they did work great and once we got to the trail she forgot she had them on.
