As much as I wish I had sent my dog to Brandon for training before bringing him home kzbin.infoUgkx1_veP7CApJK_GWy_TczaMciuG64PqJeU I am so grateful for this down-to-earth, practical guide. His training techniques and tips really work. Thank you as well for dedicating your life's work to rescue dogs, and to rescuing those of us who want the very best for our 4-legged family members.

My dog loves it when I take a treat or dry food and put it in a paper bag, then in a paper towel roll, then in a box, then in another box. She has to go through each layer and she has a blast.

I love freezing different kong recipes! I also set my pup up with a scavenger hunt every meal, he gets the first half in his kong and then from his bowl, while he’s eating out of his bowl i’ll hide treats all around his space, under blankets, in his bed and kennel etc. I have noticed a significant change in his overall happiness and ability to rest these past few weeks since we’ve been doing this. Loved this video your pups are lucky to have you, I’m definitely gonna start practicing heal with beau in the house!

We do “scavenger hunt”. While they are outside, I hide pieces of their kibble all over the house. Basically on any surface they can safely access. As soon as they come inside they can smell it and get super excited about playing this game. Their tails wag the whole time while they use their noses to find all the kibble.

When I can't get out to walk, I will run around the yard with my dog with one of her toys tied to a rope and she loves to chase it, because she is a greyhound. On days it's too cold or hot, I give her chicken broth ice cubes or enrichment games where she has to find treats inside small cardboard boxes or egg cartons. We are slowly working on training, but her attention span is like a toddler's

Our chocolate lab absolutely loved tennis balls and fetch. We used to play hide and seek with a ball. We would have him sit and see the ball in our hands, tell him to stay and then walk through the house, touching furniture, walls, etc with the ball and "spreading the scent" in different rooms, and finally hide it somewhere. Then we would go back to him and snap our fingers and he would run through the house and find it. He loved it and it was a great way to exercise his mind and body!

I have no indoor hacks (I'm currently learning from you), buuut I have an outdoor one. If you have time, and your dog likes to fetch take them on an off the leash hike and bring a Kong. You need to be careful that you don't throw the Kong into a pricker bush, off a ledge, into water or that the path to where you throw the Kong doesn't have blow downs laying parallel close to each other (you dog can land/crash into the second log because they are sprinting and focused on finding the Kong, my dog did it, it was bad but fortunately she hasn't shown any injury), but blow downs that are not close together work well as an obstacle. I also once took her to a trail I did use before and I guess a lot of kid would drink in those woods and and few feet from the trail you would periodically find broken bottles, sotake mind. My pooch loves it. At home she refuses to give the Kong without a treat, but on the trail she can't give it to me fast enough to toss it again for her. A good trail works both body and mind and can cut the time it usually takes to tire your pooch out on a hike in half.

my fav is hide and seek. i'll put him in a sit-stay then with a treat in my hand go hide somewhere in the house, i'll tell him to come then when he finds me he gets the treat. it's helps improve all the before mentioned commands and it's so much fun!

I use many variations on hiding treats for my GSD. Now that she understands the game she can find a pea sized piece of cheese anywhere in the house. I get her to stay behind the kitchen Island where she cant see where I hide the treats. Now I can show her I'm hiding 3 treats and she doesn't stop looking until all 3 are found. the possibilities are endless with this game. Always set your dog up to win: increase difficulty gradually. We also do indoor fetch and catch, hide the toy. I swear she deliberately rolls the ball under the couch to get my help, great practice to show me by looking back and forth and reaching with her paws, where is the ball?. During these games she has learned the names of several toys and quite a few words and phrases such as , do you need help? look over here,, while pointing, go find, wait, stay, go back, toy box...look in the toy box , look at me, do you want to play? ( get the chicken, ball, red ring...) other good tricks are spin, circle, figure 8, peekaboo, sit pretty... crawl., 118 tricks in "The Big Book of Tricks for the Best Dog Ever"

My husband likes to pretend to throw the ball or toy after already throwing it a bunch of times. Then he hides it under him or behind the couch. I always give in after I see them running around and show them where it is lol now they know he hides it somewhere so they look at me to help find it haha! I’d always feel bad but I guess I should let them play 😜

We do the cupcake treat game and have my dog "stay" while I hide treats randomly throughout the house then challenge him to find them, also having him stay, I go hide then call him (hide & seek!), DIY treat puzzles made from empty oatmeal boxes, empty tissue paper rollers - my dog doesn't eat the cardboard but watch carefully. We use footstools, books, anything at all to create a unique agility/obstacle course and my dog's favorite, if I see someone walking a dog past my yard, I call out "Puppies!" and my dog loves to run out in the fenced yard to greet them. We've made lots of friends spotting puppies on winters' days. We're careful not to spook less social sorts. We also do bird watching at our bird feeders & cat and squirrel spotting. We don't endanger or frighten them - just watch from the windows. Finally a vigorous rug with a freshly warmed towel from the dryer when my little guy comes in from snow or cold rain. He loves it!

I have a 7 lb. Maltese who is small and low to the ground, so I take the pillow case that covers her little dog bed and hide toys in it. She loves looking for them and pulling them out of the case. It’s interactive so I make the plush toys squeak and move around and she goes nuts like a terrier looking for mice. It’s a great distraction and great for building thigh muscles. Another game she loves is a toy From Chewy that a prey pole. It is a pole with a plush toy attached that she chases after.

My dog LOVES balloons. Give her a balloon and she'd bounce that balloon like a volleyball for hours. We would obviously supervise her if/when the balloon popped so she wouldn't eat it. Other than Easter sunday, we would have "Easter egg" hunts with her favorite treats.

Purple laser! At least once a day out Moxie leads us to the basement stairs and looks down, telling us she wants to run after the laser 😃 never knew it wasn’t only for cats until I bought a laser with dog paws on it! 😂

I just started weaning my dogs off of a laser. It's apparently very bad for them! My poodle is quite anxious anyway and he started getting OCD as many dogs playing with lasers do. He would sit and wait for playtime with it, wouldn't eat without it, and became alert and panicked with it. His anxiety got way worse. We were watching a movie where a bright light flashed quickly and he jumped back and was so scared he wouldn't go outside to potty. So I'm trying to find new ways to play with him indoors and get him some exercise.

@@dianarusnov292 sorry to hear that! I did hear there are some breeds that can’t handle it and it brings out OCD and big time anxiety - thankfully our mutt has learned the hand signal for “no more - all done” lol

@@heathertucker9532 Mine definitely understands it's a game too! Poodles are quite smart, it's just the actual laser increases their prey drive to the extent that lights and even shadows become troublesome, whether it's a game or not, it's how their brain becomes hardwired. Happy to hear yours does well! Lots of dogs are ok and don't develop the issue, especially if they're not anxious! Just something to watch out for! I learned the hard way, now I'm stuck getting him to not sit by "his place," every night like clockwork waiting for me to get his favorite "toy" out lol

Same! I didn’t even know it had a laser pointer.I thought it was just a mini flash light. God forbid he hears it jingle. He looks at me all excited like “omg it’s happening! The red fly!” 😂

This is kinda obvious and not a substitute for mental stimulation, but it's pretty easy to teach most dogs to run on a treadmill. If you're on a budget and handy with tools, you can make a carpet runner. IMO, this is a must if you have an athletic breed like a husky. I incorporate two Lasko high velocity blowers set well ahead and a couple of feet apart, aimed at the front shoulders. This keeps the high speed air from blowing directly in their eyes. I hope this helps! Keep up the great work!

I played hide and seek with my dogs and they LOVED it! It tired them out too so it was perfect for both of us.

I pretty much just started following you and love your videos, we just got a Labradoodle, mini and she's whewwweee a true puppy, however, following your videos is helping out a lot. My husband who's home with her during the day while I work FT so when I get he's blowing wind (like we re-verse from our daughters), but watching your videos is helping him out a lot with the pup.

I really like to put get a donut pan and put a treat in it. After that I put a sock over it and every one and a while I’ll put a treat In the sock as well to confuse my dog. Lastly when she finds the treat I put the sock back in the pan and since the smell is still there from the treat she continues to lift up the sock although there is no treat. I hope it works for you all as well as it does for me ❤️

We play tug of war in our largest area of our small house. I am working on fetch with a rolling ball, too. Puppy is 3 mos old on this coming Saturday and he already does sit, lay down, shake and high five. We work with him daily, of course.
