This is a video about the dog breed Pyrenean Mountain Dogs, from the www.naturallyhappydogs.com website.
In this video, we meet the dog breed the Pyrenean Mountain Dog.
Paul Meakin lives with and shows his Pyrenean Mountain Dogs. In this article he talks us through this majestic giant breed.
A fast and powerful breed, they need a good level of training. The breed was originally bred to guard livestock, primarily sheep, from wolves and bears.

We found 2 Great Pyrenees puppies dumped. They were about 5 weeks old cold wet scared hungry. To say the least we got right on this. It’s been a week and they are wonderful. Vet visit says they are full blood, double do claws and all. Healthy, and happy. We named them “Daisy and Stella”. They are a blessing to us. We just cry thinking of what could have happened.

Excellent Video. I will always own a Great Pyrenees. My first girl I got over 26 years ago, she lived to be 14 1/2 yrs old. My first male he lived to be over 15 yrs old, I never had any health issues with either of them. Last year my 9 yr old Male developed a Nasal Tumor (Cancer), just after that my 11 yr old Male developed a Cancer tumor pressing on his rectum. I was heart broken, I lost both of my Boys within 2 months time. Before I lost my 9 yr old, I got a Male Anatolian X Great Pyrenees at 5 weeks old , before I lost my 11 yr old I got a Purebred Great Pyr Male 4 months old. These two saved my heart broken heart, The Anatolian was the puppy from hell, he would bite non stop. Upon verbal correction he would snarl his nose up and clack his jaws. Now at a year old and 100 lbs, he is very loyal, smart, smart, smart. He's more agile and active then the Great Pyr. My Pyr is a typical Pyr, but at times he's been more aggressive than my past Pyrs. My guess he's 110 lbs at 13 months old. The only time any of my Pyrs would drool (past or Present dogs) is they want something good you are eating. My Pyr does more barking, than the Anatolian X, but digging craters to China they are equal. I have 44 acres w/ horses , & Cows but they are confined to an acre & a half around the house. They live both outside & inside. You have to be a strong Pack leader but kind, they do not respond to harsh correction. Be prepared for tons of hair and dirt, but they will own your HEART.

My neighbor's GP adopted me & my daughter. I think they'll protect anything they want lol. She circles our house, barking to ward off any coyotes or anything else that she thinks may be out there. The neighbors have had to come pick her up a few times now because she won't leave us lol. She's treated very well at her home, but she loves us lol. We love her too. Special dog.

I live on a 42 acre ranch. I have a 12 wk old GP. he's 38lbs. does sit, down, off, up, heal, stay, come, leave it, and look at me - the first time. I only give the command once. he's a quick learner. I've had him for 5 wks. he's an indoor dog, kennel trained, and he's potty trained. I use positive reinforcement. and mine LOVES his toys, bones, and most of all his cookies (treats). he's my white shadow. lol loves to go on long walks thru the snow! he also loves to heard the small kids. and he loves my roomies dogs (a pug and a chihuahua), too. he has such a great temperament and loves people and the other animals.

I have a four month old female and she's become my life. When I get home from work she jumps on me and hugs me and gives me this look of "I missed you" and I hope she knows how much I missed her too. She's so laid back but she gets these energy spurs where she grabs anything and bites everything but she's just a puppy. She's full white and yeah, she doesn't have a full black nose. But she's gorgeous. The only female of the litter and I feel so blessed. She has one more set of shots and then off to our many adventures we'll go.

The dogs in this video remind me so much of our 7-year-old Pyr, Tristan. He's the most chill, easy going, lovey dovey dog I've ever had. We rescued him when he was about 2 years old. The only down side has been the barking. It's more pronounced when he's outside (we have rabbits, deer, squirrels, coyotes, foxes, and the occasional bobcat in our neighborhood), but he'll also bark at something he sees out the window (usually roaming cats). Generally, he's compliant with our commands. He does tend to take his sweet time to do so. If you want a Great Pyrenees, be sure to provide lots of space outside (fencing that prevents climbing over or digging under). They need to be outside guarding the property. Hotter climates might not be ideal due to their coat, but generally, Pyrs are impervious to weather. Overall, our Pyr has been a great, loving addition to our family. I'm so happy we have him.

Great video! We've had our eight-year old 114 pound girl for six years. She is absolutely everything you say. Very independent, yet minds pretty well. Great for walks with elderly family member. or kids. Generally ignores the little, yappy dogs as you say, but occasionally puts a paw on their head or, if they're too aggressive, warns them off. A large dog, which is usually kenneled, was loose one day and unexpectedly (without warning) took a very aggressive run at grandpa while on their walk. Our girl turned and met the charging dog just before he reached 84 year-old Gramps. He said it was pretty scarey---both dogs were on their hind legs, muzzle to muzzle, teeth bared just inches from Gramp's face. I guess our girl was a bit more intimidating up-close, because the aggressor quickly turned and headed for home. She's such a wonderful family member gives us a great sense of security. What a special gentle, yet protective spirit she has.True to her breed. Thank you!

We have a one and a half year old Great Pyrenees that we rescued. He is a wonderful dog. We have a small house and yard but he seems to be doing great here. The two strange things about him is that he's very picky about food and eats very little for his size. The other is that he has to be lifted into the car because he won't use a ramp or jump in. Otherwise, we love him so much and he is a wonderful part of our family ❤

Great Pyrenees don’t eat a lot for their size. I know I was surprised by how little my guy eats as an adult. When I got him he was soooo skinny that I let him have dry food as much as he wanted even now I leave him a bowl of kibble that he eats when he wants. He doesn’t gobble the whole thing.

Handsome boys. Also, be prepared for night barking at times. They often go on duty when the sun goes down. Inside, not so bad, but outside they could really annoy your neighbors if they live right next to you. Tend to be very "pawsy" if you stop rubbing or grooming them. They will reach out to get your attention or just rest their paw on your leg while you're rubbing them. Very affectionate but also very independent. Very sweet natured dog, but not going to trip over itself trying to please you like a Golden would.

My name is Julie. I have had a Rottweiler/Shepherd cross as my first dog years ago. He was my best friend, Ill never EVER forget Duke. Then Be-Be my Chihuahua, she passed away years after Duke. But i have now my Leo, Great Pyrenees 2 years old. Had him given to me at 10 months old. I needed another dog at my parents rural country home. When i met him i was scared for about 5 seconds...I was kinda like" ahh,hes huge, so big...but then a few seconds went by, and we were best friends. He was not trained, or worked with, he had no manners whatsoever. He was rude( and still is sometimes lol) But he was and is a gentle Ben. Leo has helped me so much this year, i lost 2 people in my life and its been a hard year, worst of my life. I realised that Leo took care of me, not the other way around. I believe he saved my life. I get annoyed with him at times and i know its just me. We are together 24 -7 so maybe we both need a break from each other! Anyhows, i just want to say, Leo is my dog soul mate...hes my best friend, and the craziest, loyal, smartest, loving, annoying, funny, rude, gentle with everyone and every other animal, (small or big) Everyone loves Leo.... Great Pyrenees is the best dog ive ever owned and I am lucky to have such a great dog in my life.

We have a Great Pyrenees and a Labrador. Labrador is one year older and was 1 when we got the GP puppy. Hormones kicked in at one year old for Do-gee, our GP, and he was aggressive for a few weeks to Doozer, the Lab. Even bit his cheek and formed an abscess. Now at 18 months old, he's much more mellow and they are getting along again. And, what?! No slobber!!! Guess we got a bad deal. I've had a St. Bernard and an English Mastiff, both from puppy to death. Their slobber was nothing compared to Do-gee! Man, he's Niagra Falls!!

I have had 3 Pyrs in almost 30 years. They have each been wonderful family dogs, a with completely different personality. But, with each one, we were their pack. My 3rd Pyr was a great escape artist, in his younger years. He like to run out of the house and disappear into the neighborhood for a great adventure, startlingly the neighbors. If we ran after him, we had better have a treat and the leash. One day, my son, in a rush to catch the school bus, left the door ajar. My dog was nowhere to be found. He loved going for rides in the minivan, so I began my search via the van. It didn’t take long to find him up over the hillside. I open the door and yelled, “get in!” and he did! That may have been his last escape. He is now almost and will have a new little brother Pyr in a few weeks!

I just got my two boys Saturday 12/14/18... I love these guys, they are so smart for only being just under seven weeks old. They seem to have bonded to me right from the start. I live on four wooded acres so they're having a great time exploring. I fenced in a temporary play area for when I'm working here on the property. I took an early retirement, so at 62 I'll be able to give them my full time for training and exercise. I am going to fence in the front two acres because of the deer, coyotes and othe wildlife that are here. I've always wanted two big white Shepherds but I believe I'll be even happier with two white dogs that are born Shepherds...

I wish I had watched your video before we got our Great Pyr :) We got the last girl left in the litter, and she was so nervous we had a terrible time for that first year - she was already 5 months old when we got her and she was too scared to even go outside, let alone potty train. Not the best decision for first time dog owners like us. We have persevered though, and now she is turning into a lovely nearly 2 year old. She has calmed a lot, and although she doesn't want to walk anywhere except around the block, if we take her to the countryside she will run joyfully. Snow is her favourite thing in the world and she is her real mountain dog self in snow. I'm not sure she knows who the boss is in our 'pack', but she does tend to accept the adults as above her. The younger children she clearly sees more like litter mates and we had trouble getting her not to bite them in play. She adores them though and will let them sleep and clamber all over her. One thing - if you think a Great Pyr is ideal because they are supposed to be great with other pets - ours is not. She was bullied by our cat at first and after a number of swats to the nose, she has decided he is the enemy. She will chase him and try to swat him down if she gets close enough. And with paws as big as a Great Pyr has, that is dangerous. Otherwise, great family dog. Just don't expect them to play fetch with your kids - ours has never once returned a stick, and has no clue what to do with a ball. Bull pizzles are awesome to get them from chewing everything during teething.

Interesting we have two. The male is so goofy and almost has ADD, but gentle. He's not afraid of anyone, and is almost unaware that he should be concerned at times. The female is very intelligent and more of a protector and anxious around new people. She goes nuts with excitiment everytime I come home. They both love pats and cuddles, and cuddling up to you on the sofa. The male dog can be a bit ridiculous at times, because when his sisters is getting attention, he will just butt in and just like sit on her head to get to the front of the line (he sees nothing wrong with doing that). It's not like he is wanting to hurt her, it's as if he thinks "oh she's a piece of furniture, she wont notice". He's a bit airy fairy but very sweet. The female takes commands much easier and learns quicker.

We have a neighborhood Pyrenees girl. She shepherds anyone who happens to walk on our road. She walks me to the bus stop. She walks with a neighbor on his daily exercise route. She jumps our fence to visit. We are her sheeple.

I took in a 2 yr old male Great Pyrenees after he had been passed to 3 different sheep ranchers in 1 yr. I needed a replacement livestock guard dog so tried him and fell in love with this breeds personality. He had little human contact those first 2 yrs but adjusted quickly to human affection. He is amazing with my livestock, such bold and fearless dogs. Last summer he let me know something was in pasture and when I checked, he had a large brown bear treed (I ran the other way real fast! ha) Also, I watched him chase a mt. lion over the fence that thought it would try my range chickens, he prevented that. You are SO right, they scare first (which almost always works) before they become aggressive or attack. They learn obedience commands but they are independent thinkers, so if something is on their mind, like predators, they are off & going. The coat for me is a challenge as it tends to mat more than my Akbash dog's but brushing with a wire comb helps. I absolutely love how sweet & gentle these dogs are, yet know their jobs. Now I'm going outside and sit with mine and watch the wildlife go by..in safety. From the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains in California. By

So far I had 2 Great Pyrenees, 2 females the first one Bella was huge the second one ( current one) is also a female a bit smaller, but they are the most loving dogs, peaceful, good nature, they bark if they sense someone walking and sense some danger, incredibly beautiful, has presence, dignifying, adorable, beautiful coat, protective to their family. Good with children and other dogs, love her so much, my GP is extremely protective, is a joy to have her around, is a blessing actually I call her my angel so loving and protective.

Great video, thanks. I currently own -2 brothers. 1/2 great prynee and 1/2 blk Russ terroir. Great dogs. I sense the dogs are preprogrammed & the puppy has the intelligence of an adult dog. As it like to exist & like to hang out. Hard to get a dog to come when it’s called, so patience is being observed. No training for now. Just like to see them as two brothers just growing up together & giving them the best environment possible. I have two differ color coats on the dogs. Contrasting costs Looks really good when walking together. Great all around breed.

I had one for 14 years, the best dog/ security dog I ever had, I got him from a home that brutally treated him he was just over a year old, It took me a LONG time to train him and gain his trust because of it and I ended up having him trained with hand signals - just the basics, stop, come, sit, stay - he was everything that this guy says they are and more, he protected my wife quite a few times and glad he did. Every time I went out to work, he knew his job was to be near my wife and he stayed until i got home, his name was Bo and a very loving boy,,,,,,,still broke my heart when he died - Devastated,,,,,f#ck, broke my heart, he was the best friend I had, came with me everywhere.

I got my GP when she was 5 weeks old. I live in a very rural area. I thought she was a poodle and no offense but I said no. LOL. I brought her home and I knew nothing abt the breed. She was very good pup! I was told she was the runt and she was one of 10. Apparently she wasn't getting much good bc she went from a tiny bowl to next size quickly! Grew very fast to 120lbs. I thought she was deaf. Even in the house she would not respond to my voice but if I stomped on the floor she would look at me! Also never reacted to vac and leaf blower however she played in the leaves like the free spirit she is. She is my baby. Out of all my pups she is most protective. I broke my arm and was in bed and miserable she laid right beside me and would not let the other pups near me! She has free reign where I live no leash law and while she investigates out here she typically stays on my property and barks at everything all night. They are nocturnal. She doesn't stay out in the day much just does her stuff and breakd the door down to get back in! Most nights she will stay out even in the rain, snow, and ice and protect me and our home! But once the sun starts coming up she wants in! I love this breed and would have more if I could. She is the sweetest yet scary to strangers. If I go up to someone she doesn't know and talk to them she will sniff them and then let them pet her. I'm pretty sure if I reacted badly she would react in kind. Ty for the vid they are beautiful boys!!!

As a 4 - 8 year old girl, I was the "herd" of a Pyr, most of the time. When I went to first grade, she ambled over to the next door neighbor's dairy farm and herded the cows because I wasn't around. She slept with me until my dad shushed her off my bed when he checked in on me when he went to bed. 5 minutes later? She was right back up with me.

They can get a bit stubborn is my experience with them. Found they will go so far down a road you've taken em on a few times before and then just sit down not wanting to go any further, but if you change up the direction frequently then they are less likely to do that. Other than that and that they will lunge after little things that run off they are awesome to walk. Very gentle big dog, the one I'm helping out with is only 8 months old and already bigger than most other large breads(:

Really enjoyed the video! Can you give me some advice! I visit a rescue shelter that has a Pyrenees! She is very skittish and Leary of people, men mainly. She will take treats from my hand! I tell her to take them nice, in a calm voice and she doesn't even touch my hand! I am still not confident to try and pet her! She may have been abused, only guessing! Do they give warning or am I going to lose my hand! She is a beautiful dog! I cannot adopt! Very interesting breed!

Ok i have to be honest I was glad to see new Pyr videos until I got further into this one. I mean no disrespect but this video should NOT be taken in anyway as representing Great Pyrenees as a breed but as this one persons experience only. As livestock guardians they do wonderfully with animals as small s chickens and as large as cattle which is my families nearly 100yrs of experience with the breed. As for his opinion of how they get along with small dogs specially the small yappy type dogs. If you own these kind of dogs you have nothing to fear from a pyr unless you have a biter. Pyrs by their very nature and breeding do not harm small animals and they actually get along well with cats. They are the 1 breed that is know to never turn and bite a child either. They are very owner and child protective so its not wise to try and spank your kid where that dog can hear/see you and do something about it. These dogs will tolerate just about anything a curious child may want to do. Search youtube to see the abuse they tolerate from goats and sheep they will take. They take training but it depends on the kind, if you want come, sit, stay dog get a retriever or lab. Pyrs are not slaves and frankly you will learn the Pyr version of f*ck you pretty quick. They will work with you because it pleases you and for no other reason and food is rarely a consistent motivator. There are a lot of cons to having a pyr if you're not already an owner. I've had them all my life. I've helped and am helping a number of people negotiate the trials of owning them and i have told an army of people they do not want one that owning them would be an absolute mistake. If you have any question look up for yourself or ask me if you want. They are a the blessed curse that you will always love if you can handle them...lol

Brenda D I've gt 4 brushes my boy gets hit with and he mats op on his up awful, I swear he does it simply to piss me of. There is a special rake made by Oster it's called the Wide Coarse Rake for Dogs it's and all metal rake you can get them on Amazon, Chewy and I have seen them on ebay. these things are great. they have a special kind of tooth on them. they are more of a curved blade, they will let you get through mats as well as when spring comes and you you need to get that inner downy layer out. The thing is fantastic at helping remove cockle burs and knotted messes fox tail as well. Now if you have a farm store or that sells livestock grooming tools Weaver makes a shedding rake that has yearly the same except it is several inches wider which come spring cuts down the chore. The other 3 brushes are the ones i hit him with as his once a week and one is a standard straight rake and thats usually for his chest, I have a big male and he has a huge thick mane and that's the one brush thats quick and easy. Then for the rest of him I use a conair styling brush that you can buy for $6 and any dollar general store. it has rubber tipped wires, it holds up well and as long as you have gotten any knows with you Oster it will make quick work and it does a nice job catching any shed hair . then he gets a quick once over with a slicker to catch any stray hairs. I'll be honest my life got a lot less work when I bought that oster rake and I do a lot less vacuuming in the house too. and he isn't as bitchy when I have to get cockleburs out of his tale and back haunches either. www.chewy.com/oster-wide-coarse-rake-dogs-cats-18/dp/119583?Oster&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIxpnClKff3QIVSp7ACh3bogAqEAQYASABEgJdh_D_BwE www.statelinetack.com/item/weaver-shedding-comb/E011865/?srccode=GPSLT&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIupnv8ajf3QIVBRxpCh3kngehEAQYAiABEgLzXfD_BwE&kwid=productads-adid^160636394091-device^c-plaid^109335823308-sku^430766-adType^PLA

@@rogue.red.dragon YOU "HIT" YOUR DOGS WITH BRUSHES? FOR SHAME 😂 Actually those are great suggestions. But you may find these exact brushes, and many other designs, sizes, number of blades etc, ON EBAY. Beings they are literally ALL made in China nowadays. You can get 2 3 and 4 different brushes and rakes, for price of one most places. They just don't have names on them. And that's where the cost goes Up. As well. You will see Hundreds of different kinds and sizes as mentioned. And may find those special ones for special areas. And at 3 to 8 bucks a pop. Can't go wrong. Hope this helps ☺

@@My-Pal-Hal well Oster only makes the 3 widths and about a year ago did my local farm supple start carrying the same blade type but about 3 times wider which irked me some. But I swear I have to have a pyr that hates being brushed so wide or wider he's going to be an ass about it, so no point getting the wider one. but hands down the bladed style bruch is a godsend when it comes to cockle burrs.

Good video. Once the Great Pyrenees accepts you as the boss (trust, etc), they can be very obedient. Mine (140lbs) is an angel on a leash, never tugging and easily understanding words like home, left, right, stop, stay, heel, and similar. He also tries to make me understand him, trying different things to communicate. That level of trust and acceptance can take some time (months), however. When it comes to toys, he thinks they're mine, which he steals to encourage me chase him. Ignores the toys otherwise. Will usually not touch anything else (objects, shoes, food, trash, etc) unless I make it clear it's okay. He can pickup and move small furniture (chairs, footstools, etc). He has grabbed furniture and headed for the door (again to get me to chase him). However, he will instantly stop if I tell him to. When I lay down on the lawn outside, he'll first check to make I'm okay and then stand guard over me. If I stay long enough, he'll lay down, but remains on intense guard. He also likes to lay outside at night, softly barking periodically to warn away predators. He also likes to hunt with me (pests, etc), following me quietly, pausing when I do and coming when I tell him. We've also got a new boat and I suspect he'll enjoy fishing with me on it as well.
