It's no joke that they're an independent breed, but they're super well behaved, too. Just in their own way. For example, instead of commanding them to do something, you basically have to ask them, and they'll get around to doing it... just, you know, in their own sweet time. Mine also loves all little animals; I often find him cuddling with the various bunnies that visit the yard.

Agreed that they like small animals. While mine is a Pyrenees Anatolian mix, she loves her wiener brother, and she saves all of the fledgling birds by cradling them in her mouth and bringing them to us, and she’s never hurt a single one of them, she just makes sure brother can’t get to them. Although she also herds the kiddo, which is funny to me, not so much kiddo.

Not saying 6’ standing on hind legs is small but that’s not “ginormous” for a Great Pyrenees. My dad’s 4yo male Great Pyrenees/akbash mix stands closer to 7’ on his hind legs. IF he were to stand on his hind legs next to me, he cud lean over abit and use my head as a headrest. My dad breed that big boy with a neighbours Great Pyrenees/collie mix and in return kept 1 of the female pups. Well at 1.5yo she is already 6’ tall standing on her hind legs. And she looks small next to her father. Both r lovely cuddle bums.

Her best friend is a one-eyed, 6-pound, apple head chihuahua my best friend owns. Kiki could easily fit in Pandora's mouth and be a snack, but instead they play "tug" where Pandora holds the toy while laying on her belly and Kiki tugs viciously on it until Pandora decides to let go. Then Kiki runs around all victorious, Pandora steps on the toy to reclaim it while Kiki rolls as she loses her grip, and they resume positions and play again.

Oh I love when you do Great Pyrenees dogs!!! We have one named Ravioli. He’s sooo sweet. Loves little kids and if strangers are introduced as friends, he will smother them with love. And sometimes drool. But a stranger knocking at the door will get a scary growl and then a big booming bark! Same goes for squirrels, birds, sketchy looking leaves that blow by…He’s a really good guard dog. He HATES baths though. When he gets home he rubs on everything like, “Oh my dog! I’ve got clean on me! Ew ew I gotta get the clean off! 😩” 😂😂😂 He also does a stress poop outside the groomer. 🤣

They actually give A LOT of warning before actually biting the intruder. But if one pushes them into the attack... Well... Let's put it that way. From what I know from Pys owners, if a xxxl pitbull mastiff mix fighting dog gets loose, bothers the sheep and meets a great Pyrenees - I am mostly worried for pitbull's life and not the Pyr or the sheep. Also. Bite strength almost like that of a kangal.

Just LUV reading the comments from all these Pyr owners, and you had your work cut out for you with this beautiful boy, Vanessa! He seemed pretty tolerant and mellow for the most part, and gave you such sweet kisses when his grooming was completed. I believe we may have collected, vacuumed, and swept up enough Pyr hair to stuff a king-sized mattress, but our two are treasured and loved household members who never fail to make us smile. Beautiful temperaments and a beautiful breed.

I have two Great Pyrenees and love them both so much. They can be territorial where other animals are concerned but usually love people, especially children. I live in Northeast Tennessee and let them run wild in the woods behind my house sometimes. Occasionally they brink dead coyotes back and some fresh scars but they genuinely seem like they had fun.

When my dog Daisy was a puppy I realized she had some Border Collie in her when she tried to herd a couple of Great Pyrenees. Watching a 10lb puppy herd a couple of 100+ lb dogs was hilarious. She tries to herd anything white and fluffy to this day.

In 2019 a wonderful Great Pyrenees named Odin became a hero to his family. The family had to evacuate due to the California wildfires. Odin refused to leave the eight goats he was guarding for them. (He and another Great Pyrenees take turns.) The family had to leave without him. When they returned, not only was Odin STILL ALIVE, he had saved EVERY ONE of the goats, along with a few deer he'd rounded up from somewhere too. He had some burned paw pads and singed fur, and he was exhausted, but he made it. The BEST boy!

Baker looks so much better after his groom! But ow...I hope you weren't bruised too badly after that dismount. I've got an online friend who's had Great Pyrs and Bearded Collies all the time I've known her. She lost her last GP, Dutch, several months ago. Her friends on the forum had known Dutch since she got him as a pup. We're all hoping she can get another big floof soon. I've never met any in real life, but Dutch and his big sister, Mia, alway sounded like wonderful dogs.

Your comments about the breed are dead on! Our great pyrness was as smart as they come but stubborn! We'd tell her to do something and you could just see her mind working, deciding if she was going to obey or not. Very sweet dog though, her independence caused no real problems as she was such a good natured nanny dog. Kept us all safe from thunder and vacuum cleaners! Ours also had bad hips at the end, sadly part of why we had to euthanize her. Except ours loved strangers, after she sniffed them a bit. That jumping off the table is on brand for them, he decided he was done and he was getting down! lol. I miss that dog.

Oh, that's some big beef boy....and he is looking pretty good with hls styling. Something tells me, that he also liked the before 😉 It was just physics that made him almost knock you out as he was trying to get down again. The event was set as soon as Baker leaned his weight forward. It's like the attempt to stop a sliding semi truck. Hope both of you are okay and nobody got seriously hurt.

My mom had a goat ranch and we struggled for years with coyotes killing our goats. Tried a few different things; firing a rifle, traps (with awful results), donkeys... Mom finally traded some goats for two puppies, half Great Pyrenees and half Anatolian Shepherd. They lived out with the goats, and Mom warned us that they may never be friendly; they weren't pets and we shouldn't treat them as such. But King Louie and Queen Ellie were the sweetest, kindest big guard dogs. Whenever we were outside, they would come greet us and just LEAN against us (and for a couple years, they outweighed me, so that was a lot!). Never once showed aggression to us, though would bark at unfamiliar cars coming up the driveway. But they did indeed spend most of their lives outside with the goats, and holy crap, when a coyote howled they just TOOK OFF RUNNING after them like nothing you've ever seen. We never had another problem with goats getting killed. Louie passed away at about eight years old from cancer. Ellie made it to 15 years old, and up until at least 13, she still ran like you wouldn't believe. My mom eventually sold the goat ranch and moved way north into the woods, at which point we did finally convince Ellie to come inside sometimes because of the freezing winters, but she still preferred the outdoors and spent her last few days laying in the grass and soaking up the sun. Pyrenees are fantastic dogs. I don't think I could put up with the hair and drool, but I love them.
