I only just started watching you but I like your videos, i have a 5 year old border collie and a 4 1/2 year old Australian shepherd, both dogs i've had since babies, my border has a very high prey drive and I used to live out in the middle of nowhere country in Ohio, if he could hear me he would come to me even as a super little puppy of 3 months old, problem was his prey drive was so high he would even chase the trains that would come by my house and i was literally 1 house from the train track with no fence on my yard. Before i tried an e-collar i tried a dog whistle i used to use his favorite squeaky toy to get his attention well the dog whistle didn't work he never paid attention to it and his toy eventually he was just too distracted by the deer or rabbit or train or whatever it was, I finally tried an e-collar, that was the only thing that worked where he would stop and look at me, it was almost like as soon as that prey drive kicked in he couldn't hear me. My aussie doesn't have nearly as high of a prey drive and I only stick him on an e-collar off leash if i take him to a dog park or something, otherwise he listens without one. Every dog is different and requires something different.

A dog charging my kids and me? Yeah no, there’s no “let’s see if he’s friendly” . I’ve been attacked by a dog & I’m not letting that happen to my kids just bc someone thinks it’s cute to let their dog run loose. And that goes for my dogs too. If they got loose & charged someone, I wouldn’t blame them for doing the same. Sorry, but not sorry.

Hey Darren! How old is your dog? With a puppy that is less than 16 weeks I would do very short sessions (around 5 minutes) various times throughout the day. If your dog is older and understands the command then we do longer sessions combined with play while we proof the command. These sessions are closer to 30 minutes. @SuburbanK9DogTraining My dog “plays the game.” She also will do anything correctly for a piece of cheese, but that’s not always available. I tried consistent training when she was a pup but my consequences were sometimes lacking. Anyway, she is about to turn 3. Are you suggesting that if I return to consistent training with consistent consequences (and vary the environment with different distractions), she might improve. Perhaps I try just using praise and no treats, and I might even change the cue word to start fresh. I just want to clarify that if a dog knows to ‘play the game,’ there is still hope to fix the issue?
@SuburbanK9DogTraining4 күн бұрын
Hi Katherine! You can definitely fix the issue at the age of three, we do that all the time! Here is a newer video we made showing how to do this without treats. Do you recommend working each dog separately then together as in the same day or solo for a few weeks and then together?
@SuburbanK9DogTraining4 күн бұрын
It depends on how the dogs are doing. If they listen well enough to train together when you first start then that is great! You could train them separately for a while each day and then do a joint session later in the day. If you need a few weeks to make progress before trying to train two dogs at once that is totally normal and not an issue at all!

Hiya, I've seen your previous videos on Littermate syndrome. I live with my parents and they have a puppy, I also have a puppy from the same litter so I am worried of course. I plan to crate, train and socialise my dog separately from their dog, at what age would this become less of an issue or is it always?
@SuburbanK9DogTraining4 күн бұрын
That is a great question Charlie! The issues become much less worrisome with time. The first 16 weeks of the dogs age are incredibly important. That is when most of their socialization is done and is when the groundwork for the rest of their life is laid. After that you can slow down quite a bit week by week and just keep an eye on the issue until mental maturity (12-18 months).
@derronward15496 күн бұрын

Hey Derron! These methods do work when only one dog is showing the issues. Is your new dog overly attached to the older dog?

@@SuburbanK9DogTraining Yes! One of the major issues is walks. If we walk both dogs, our new dog will pull and cry if he is not with our older dog.

Got it! Then yes, this training will help a lot! I would take the little guy for lots of socialization trips and walks on his own. Hey James! If you want to use the vibration to stop jumping and barking you will need to do things very differently than we do in this video. I have a 5 year old yoke and just got two 18 week old Cavachon puppies (I could separate them). Grant the terrier is growling at the puppies when they are crated, but some times just sniffs at them. I love all my fur babies and I really want them to get along. It’s only been 7 days and I have been keeping Grant and the puppies separated. Any additional advice would be appreciated. Thanks for your video!
@SuburbanK9DogTraining12 күн бұрын
Hi Diane! Does Grant enjoy playing with other dogs? If he likes other dogs he may just be trying to tell the pups he doesn't like their nonsense at that point in time (jumping, barking etc.). Is there a chance he is guarding something from them? His bone, toys, food or bed? This can often lead to growling that seems unpredictable. One of the best things you can do is take them for a walk together (even a short one) and then let them say hi to each other when they are calm and away from the house. These intros are almost always easier. We recently posted a video on when you should let your older dog correct or stop a puppy and when you should not. Here it is: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qnysanh_YtGbf7s Let us know what other questions come up after reading this reply. @SuburbanK9DogTraining13 күн бұрын
Great question Mark! We don't ever use the vibration as a correction, but the stim function can definitely be used that way. Here is a video of us working with a Golden Retriever who steals food from the counter. kzbin.info/www/bejne/sIi5hH6KeJ2pic0 We don't use an e collar in the video but it could be used. I would watch the video and practice for a few days without the e collar and then consider using it if needed. I would definitely spend some time dialing in the level first to make sure you don't over correct. Getting good contact with a Golden can be an issue due to the fur. Here is a video on how we acclimate a dog to the stim function to get the proper working level. In this video we start with the heel command and then move to off leash come. The initial goal is to find a level that the dog cares about but that doesn't scare them. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nH_XYZtsnc53h9E Want type of collar did you get?
