This guy had been in the hospital for a long time. His dog missed him a lot, but when he finally came back home, his pup didn't recognize him. Luckily, when the dog got a closer look of him, it jumped into his arms and kissed him lovingly.

I had wandered off from my parents at the dog park, I had no supervision, just me and my blind curiosity. The nose (both humans and dogs) have a very strong and short path to the "memory center" of the brain, which is why you can sometimes remember a particular smell when recollecting a memory, and why a smell can send you back to a random memory 10 years ago, in an instant. I love dogs and brains :)

This is lovely A similar thing happened to me. My brother had a jack Russell terrier and I spent a lot of time walking her and looking after her. I like to think next to my brother I was her favourite human. When I married I moved to Australia and it was 4 years before I came back to visit family We were at a big gathering when my brother walked in with his dog. I didn't speak and she went around the room sniffing and saying hi to everyone. Then she went and sat across the room by my brother. After a few seconds it was as though some thing clicked in her brain and she recognised me just from that brief sniff. She literally launched herself onto me from across the room and began madly licking my face and whining. It was so special and even though she is long passed away I will never forget the best greeting I've ever had in my life.

Something similar to this happened to me back in 1970. We had a small mixed-breed dog named 'Ginger'. She was definitely a one-family dog! Anyone outside the family was 'The Enemy' and we had to be careful that she never escaped into the front yard. In February of that year, I joined the Navy and reported for 10 weeks of boot camp in San Diego. When I returned home, Ginger did not recognize me, either by sight or sound, and wanted to tear me apart. So, my sister got her onto her metal chain and held her firmly while I let her sniff the back of my hand. INSTANT recognition! She instantly went into the 'Where have you been' mode you saw in this video.

The sheer confusion on the dogs face when he first appeared shows he knew something wasn't right. He could probably hear a voice he recognised, but couldn't put a face to it. Dogs are smart. He would have known that all the humans demeanour was pointing towards the man on the bench, so was curious to find out why and all it took was one little sniff to get the answer. That's sort of false. One of our dogs was sent to another city for surgery and she was quite mad that she was taken away from home by an acquaintance of my mom. Upon returning after like 6 hours, for a little while, she kept her distance and was barking at us. I assume she thought we had abandoned her. Still, she quickly forgave us and came closer to be cuddled. But in conclusion, I found out that your dogs can actually get mad at you.

Otherwise, if they are actually abused, then that's a whole different thing, like they'll be extremely agressive/afraid and avoid most people, and those who get close often get bitten or scratched if the ladder isn't possible (dog muzzle, etc), but can later recoverer from trauma if taken good care of by a loving owner and is accompanied by other dogs, like a friendly shelter. In your case it was a little mad at you because he just saw you right before he was taken away, whereas if you were the one leaving he wouldn't have had that bad impression, only making them miss you and be there waiting, which is the case for abandoned dogs.

Still, I have never actually encountered such a situation before or after that, so I found it slightly strange. I was just saying that dogs DO get mad at their owners, but of course it all gets solved quickly when they've always been good to each other. Anyway, yes, if you mistreat a dog it'll definitely mess with their ability to trust and interact with humans. I wouldn't even consider such a person a pet owner, but as a property owner, and the dog will also see you more like a slave master than as a good friend.
