Obligatory Episode 4 Trivia: In the manga, whenever a character dies, the author ends the chapter with a quick drawing of them ascending to heaven as angels no matter who they were. Shou Tucker is the sole exception; at the end of the chapter that became this episode, he was shown burning in hell.

Episode 4 is when I knew I would like Scar as a character. Ed would have held out too much hope that he could change Nina back and there's no knowing how much pain she would have gone through in order for them to even attempt it. You need that balance of child like hope and adult like understanding that giving up is sometimes the best option.

And besides, Greeds chimera friends had animal traits and urges even in their human forms, so it's reasonable to assume that Zampano and Jirso also have that issue.

These two episodes really show how Ed believes in Alchemy over humanity and compassion. Like sure, he has compassion and human values, but it is warped in his own ambition and his blind belief in Alchemy, as he states himself, he believes Alchemy will solve anything and is the response to every human problem, including death or suffering. That's why Scar is such a good counter-part to that, with Alchemy being basically the basis of all his suffering. In my mind, Scar and the Nina incident are what humble Ed the most (along with... spoilers).
@MARYWTHER
@MARYWTHER Ай бұрын
@@TheJjcczz Their story isn't so much about whether or not they find a way to have their bodies back, but rather finding hope and purpose in your beliefs and values. It's like Rose, but in a less twisted way. Basically it's the point of the entire show tbh. It's also "normal" for someone who does not believe in Alchemy like Scar to believe that Alchemy or States Alchemists or the Government, could never save Nina. At this point, the story isn't about giving hope of fixing Nina, it's about taking away all the brothers' beliefs in Alchemy, dismantling them and making them question everything they've relied on so far.

These two episodes go perfect together. The first one shows how bad it is to blindly follow faith. The second one shows how bad it is to blindly follow science.
@martasilva8036
@martasilva8036 24 күн бұрын
This is the worst understanding of episode 3 that one can have lol. But I understand the motivation for this interpretation and why it is so popular. The second description is coherent, although it deals more with the "lack of morality" and the "failure of authorities" (scientists, military and paternal) than with "blind faith in science". The first episode has more to do with the denial of the gift and human self-sufficiency. Edward doesn't even care about the issue of "blind faith" (he says, "religion doesn't interest me"). He only sympathizes with Rosé because her motivation is similar to his.
@leonardocerqueiradias6168
@leonardocerqueiradias6168 24 күн бұрын
@@martasilva8036 Fullmetal Alchesmist is all about not following anything blindly. That's one of the main themes of the whole show. Spoilers I guess, but the brother's arc is literally about finding the middle path. The two "first episodes" come hard on this theme (I call it first episodes, because 1 and 2 are filler and flashback). Although episode 4 does have some elements of failure of authorities, is not the main point by far. Tucker's relantionship with his daughter is barely shown. Tucker doesn't do what he does for lack of supervision, or because an authority told him to do it. He did it because he could, because he saw the possibility (he quite literally says that). The whole point of this plot point is science going too far. And Rosé abolutely shows the other side. It shows faith going too far. That's literally what Edward means by "you have your own legs". It's not a coincidence that both episodes end with the opposite viewpoint being shown as "right". Episode 3 ends with the temple in ruins and Edward talking about doing things yourself and not relying on God. Episode 4 ends with God's mercy.
@martasilva8036
@martasilva8036 24 күн бұрын
@@leonardocerqueiradias6168 Again, I repeat, the first episode is solely about self-sufficiency, blind faith is a mere artifice. As I told you, Edward himself said he didn't even care about it; he was surrounded by religious people who were being deceived and didn't say a word in their favor and he would certainly ignore Rosé's case too, if it weren't for the case that she had a motivation that mirrored his. Edward even proposes a deal with Cornello (lol), proposing that he give him the philosopher's stone and in exchange he won't explain the fraud. At the end of the episode, Edward just leaves without caring about the state of things, whether or not Cornello will continue deceiving people (Envy continues). In fact, Alphonse himself will ask for forgiveness for the way they handled it. So "blind faith" is actually a totally tangential topic. Edward himself gives that lecture to Rosé before finding out whether Cornello used alchemy or not. In other words, he didn't even care if it was a question of "faith is going too far" (lol) or blind faith, but rather that religious faith is simply something that cannot be trusted - such a stance he does not have with the science. Tucker, unlike Rosé and the inhabitants of Cornello, is not deluded and is aware of the results he will have. That's the point: Tucker is a moral monster!!! It has nothing to do with blind trust in science, Tucker knows very well what he is doing. His story is a negative allusion against the brothers' story, not against Liore's event: family breakdown, military corruption and success in the Faustian action. To interpret it otherwise is to pay attention to the lowest layers of the show, which are merely apparent.
@leonardocerqueiradias6168
@leonardocerqueiradias6168 24 күн бұрын
@@martasilva8036 I disagree. And I know a lot of people agree with my interpretation, because there are multiple video essays about this topic. I don't have an interest in argueing with you to infinity. I'm good. But... I question how good can your interpretation be when you got something COMPLETELY wrong. This - "Edward even proposes a deal with Cornello (lol), proposing that he give him the philosopher's stone and in exchange he won't explain the fraud - never happened. Edward just pretends so Cornello will say outloud his schemes and he can broadcast it to the entire town. COMPLETELY negating your point btw.
@martasilva8036
@martasilva8036 24 күн бұрын
@@leonardocerqueiradias6168 Yes, this interpretation of yours is very popular, but the average is often wrong. Most impressions don't even notice the summary subtext that exists in episode 3 for the general panorama of the series (even those who have some anime repertoire don't notice it), in addition to other basic errors motivated by poor translations from Japanese. In fact, Edward's proposal to Cornello is not in the anime, but it is in the manga, further highlighting his intention there (obtaining the philosopher's stone) and highlighting his deviation (helping anyone), after all, Edward's selfishness is a pertinent topic at the beginning. In fact, unlike what happens in the anime, it is Edward who will demand Mustang's help for having helped Liore, further highlighting his selfishness. However, in the anime we also see that Edward, initially, had no intentions of revealing Cornello's fraud, Alphonse even draws his attention because he prolonged the conversation with Rosé, but Ed initially intended to talk to him briefly (probably proposing an agreement, just like in the manga), but this only changes when he is attacked. The fraud is revealed only because it is necessary to combat Cornello, as this would prevent him from using the population against his brothers; If that weren't the case, they would probably just leave, after all, Rosé is the only one to be enlightened there (due to her insistence), the others are not even warned by the brothers and many of them even return to Leto's cult.

@@lexzeyfercronusbecause there’s a difference between adaptation and translation. Manga’s goal is typically about translation. Dubs are about adaptation, because pure translation would often lead to certain things not making sense, not fitting mouth flaps, or overall coming off stiff because while we can translate languages into other languages often times the nuances culturally or verbally can be lost in translation. So English dubs often have to change things in order for them to be satisfying. That’s not to say every change is perfect, after all adaptation is still subjective based on who’s doing it.

You guys are misunderstanding alchemy a little bit. It's a science/magic of breaking down one object/substance and turning it into another, it's not quite so simple as having power over a certain element like earth or fire. While there are alchemists who study certain specialisms (like the water alchemist you saw in episode 1), they can still do things like turn a metal pole into a metal spear or take all the parts of a broken clock and 'rearrange' them to make a working clock. Which is why equivalent exchangeis such an important thing - all the parts of what you're making need to already be there, you just break them down and reform them into a new shape.

Let's use The Fire Alchemist Roy Mustang as an example for alchemists. As an alchemist what they can do is limited by there knowledge Roy's knowledge is focused on manipulating the gases in the air to gather them to a single point then using his Ignition gloves (that create sparks when he snaps his fingers) to ignite the gas and cause an explosion. So technically he's an Air Bender not a fire bender. But as an alchemist he can still do some basic alchemy thats common among all alchemists outside of his expertise. The same can be said about all alchemists they can all do some basic stuff outside there field of expertise.

@@DanielGonzalez-vo5ni So I used to believe this as well for some reason, but it turns out memory is a fickle thing. Out of the first 20 episodes, 7 are either complete filler/Anime Canon (Meaning they help move the Anime's original story such as "The Other Elric Brothers", but they weren't in the Manga). The Anime becomes fully original after episode 28. (by that point 9 episode are Filler/Anime Canon). And that's even being nice and excluding Episodes like the Alchemy Exam and Fullmetal vs Flame. The first of which is heavily extended in the anime and the second is a small short comic in the back of one of the manga volumes which is also heavily extended. Brotherhood also skims a lot less than you may realize. It certainly still skims quite a bit. But the pacing of the Manga is just faster than 2003 to begin with. 2003 still has its merits and some of the parts it did take from the manga I do feel it did better (a lot are equal though), but it's really not as faithful in the early episodes as people remember.

The Nina event has been kind of spread a lot as a meme so if you're in the anime community I think it's good that you get to it and it ends quickly, that way the most shared meme about the series is gone p early on. Having to wait that many episodes for the people that have known indirectly is not very well paced nowadays. Sure it's not the series's fault, but I think this is ultimately better for that.

So, I know the original FMA gets a bad rap for some reason, but I REALLY preferred how it did Liorre and Shoe Tucker. In the original, Liorre starts the show as a full mini arc and is what introduces Ed and Al. Rose's story... it is SO much darker in the original, and I'll leave it at thst. It really doubles down on the tragedy of wanting to do anything to bring back a loved one and makes you sit in it for several full episodes, which makes the eventual reveal of the Elric Brother's trauma hit extra hard and relatable. Tucker is a two parter and is kept completely light until the pivotal reveal. There's basically no hints that something terrible is about to happen, no glint in the glasses or dark looks, just references to how important his certification coming up is. Especially with the overall darker tone in the original up to this point, Tucker's first episode is a welcome breath of fresh air that relieves the tension as you finally see the boys experience a loving home as they bond with Nina... And then the second episode hits... and Tucker earns his rightful spot in hell. This is generally true for most of the original vs Brotherhood; Brotherhood is more palatable because it keeps a generally lighter theme and moves at a more reasonable pace, but the original... hits you, hits you hard and doesnt let you go until you FEEL the lesson its instilling.

There’s no fillers because this anime is technically a reboot of the 2003 version, whose story completely diverges from the manga. The manga was likely completed by the time this anime started.

It wasn't finished, but Arakawa wrote really detailed scripts for the manga, and so they were able to coordinate the anime and the final chapters of the manga really closely--the last chapter was released in June 2010 and the last episode of the anime was July 2010.

The one big flaw of the dub is the mistranslation of Scar at the end. He clarifies "Two human souls" whereas in the sub he only says "Two souls" heavily implying(supported by the manga) Nina & Alexander

A perfect experience would intermingle old FMA episodes between FMAB episodes. As long as they dont directly contradict FMAB that is. For worldbuilding and more Hughes

Highly recommend watching the original 2003 version of this part of the story. It hits 10x harder (though to be fair it also spans more episodes, really building the relationship). Only if you want your entire life to be ruined by watching one of the most traumatizing moments in anime though :)

I take no pleasure in your despair, Normies. I personally prefer the original anime's "Night of The Chimera Cry" episode, only because we spent a little more time with Nina, Shou, and Arthur. And Shou Tucker having a dark secret wasn't made obvious from the beginning in the '03 series. Don't get me wrong, I fully understand that the creators were well aware that most of their audience had either watched the 2003 series or read the manga and just wanted to get passed the first few chapters the first anime already covered so they could get to the stuff we hadn't seen yet.

I know everyone has explained it to death, and by this point on Patreon you have hopefully figured it out. But think of Alchemy like a science, everybody has some general knowledge from middle/high school, but then you go to college and major in specific fields.

I’d argue that’s the problem of Brotherhood. I prefer brotherhood over FMA 2003. BUT….the way the original anime handled certain things just cant be topped. Tucker is one of them. It’s too obvious in brotherhood he’s gonna be a suspicious person. But in 2003 there’s more time to develop things and his weirdness isn’t apparent nearly as early. To the point even the normies could call it out. If THEY called it out this early, that’s how I know 2003 did the Shou Tucker bit better
