Most backyard breeders would just kill a puppy like Beans. It takes a lot of courage as a backyard breeder to surrender a dog, and it often has to happen in the middle of the night so their “colleagues” don’t find out and retaliate.

I believe that love keeps dogs alive. I know that my dog does not have too much time. On Thanksgiving I thought he was going to pass away. I laid down and talked to him. I talked about the day I adopted him, the other dogs which have passed away and all the adventures we had been on. I told him I did not want him to leave but if he had to it was OK, he would be with the other dogs and one day I would join him. He started to rest quietly. I expected him to pass away during the night but lo and behold the next day he was back to normal.

we adopted a cat, that someone had cruelly treated, who was slated for death row, as he was a resident of the local cat hospital, and unadoptable temperament. the vet called us, and asked if we could take him. she included all shots, "fat boy" prescription food, microchip, and full physical workup with neutering, all free. a wonderful vet. he's been with us for 12 years, now, and turned into a sweet, affectionate kitty. thank you, dr. bocian!

The issue in my opinion is that too many breeders, both backyard and professional, do not breed for healthy characteristics. Professionals will breed towards exaggerated features that are awarded in competitions (see pugs), and backyard breeders have no goal beyond "looks like a dog." The only breeders I'm a real fan of are the ones that are trying to send the breed 'backwards' to what they were before so that future dogs have a better quality of life. I know there are people out there doing this exact thing for french bulldogs and pugs, and I think that's a very wonderful thing. My dream is that people will choose to adopt mutts from shelters, but my realistic hope is that people who want a "purebred" will choose a retrograde pug instead of a pug.
