I've recently learnt that the artist benefits if we let the advertisements run instead of clicking skip. Is this true?.I'd like to ask people to do this now that we know because they put a lot into his videos for us for free and I think that shows our appreciation.

Yes I do believe this is true! I appreciate that a lot. I try to keep the ads to a minimum on my channel and not put the 'unskippable' ones ever. But those that I do put earn me a dribble of money. So yes, there are many ways to support content creators, and allowing the ads is one of them.
