Loose Leash Walking: • How to teach a dog to ...
I will be giving my point of view on the methods being used, as well as giving the animal(s) in this video a voice. Don't blindly follow what someone says, even if they are a "professional", use your own critical thinking skills and question the tools, the method, and the trainers.
I am using all footage under the Fair Use Act for criticism and educational purposes, and do not wish for anyone to send hateful messages to the original poster. I hope to spread awareness about this type of unnecessary and dangerous practice that is so prevalent in the dog training world and horsey world, and to give these animals a better life. Let me know what you think of it, and what you would like to see next time! Until then, practice Patience, Peace, and Pawsitivity! :3

hey! thoughts here: it seems kind of hard to say. I do think the pittie made a weird move by first appropriately barking Ronin away and then COMING BACK right up to his face (especially since as you point out later, it does seem the pittie shows poor boundaries and overly assertive behavior elsewhere). If he hadn't done this, it seems like Ronin would have the taken the initial bark correction fine and left him alone. I'm trying to read the pittie's face once he comes back .. seems like there is tension. the ears aren't back; they seem to show the 'airplane ears' uncertain posture, almost as if he's not sure what he wants to get out of this renewed meeting. and he's not out to cause a fight here cause he immediately averts when Ronin goes to face him. but it still seems questionable why he approached him so directly again right after this conflicted situation. after that Ronin does the intense sniffing again and seems to try to the muzzle-over-the-back thing (although roxie inadvertently pushes them into each other a bit i think lol). I do think the pittie's face looks somewhat tense including by the closed mouth. and we already know his body and tail are stiff. Ronin's ears at that point .. I think they do look more outward (and forward) -- the right one definitely looks swiveled out. I was also thinking the muzzle nudge looks pushy but apparently it IS an appeasement behavior: ethology.eu/canine-muzzle-nudge-muzzle-grasp-and-regurgitation-behavior/ I couldn't find any good video examples in my short search so maybe that's something someone else can point out. I imagine the gentleness of it combined with other body language (like the swiveled ears) makes the difference between that and like a muzzle push or punch. so idk all in all I feel like it was a mix of the pittie being uncertain and being very annoyed around being sniffed, and Ronin maybe being a bit too assertive and familiar in his contact, and then trying to backtrack in a way that wasn't read well by the pittie. It feels like more of a misunderstanding than either of them being domineering per se, but it does seem like the pittie had the poorer self-regulation and higher edginess, while Ronin was more confident and perhaps more easily 'tread on toes' as it were. you mentioned that Ronin features in other videos; can you link them? it would be interesting to compare. also idk if there's a way to do this, but between the original video and your video pausing so much, it's hard to see a clean flow of the interactions. I know that's tricky to do much about since you're trying to make comments as you go, but I wonder if you could section the reviewed video so as to run more of it at a time, and then play it back to add comments? would make it easier to compare your comments with events in the video. hopefully that makes sense lol

Thank you for the input, I would be happy to take your tips into account and I'll try to play more of the video between sections. Also thank you for the info about the appeasement behavior, very good to know ! 😊

I've seen previous videos of this guy that have been reviewed and he is an idiot. Full stop. In this case, I'm inclined to agree that this one wasn't necessarily all on Ronin if you go by the play-by-play. Yet Ronin's owner narrates a story that is completely self-serving. If he thinks that Pittie had its attack and prey drive cranking, then he's seen absolutely nothing. Had that really happened, Ronin would have been pinned and squealing because the hunter would have latched on and not let go or simply started mauling. Had Ronin gotten away, he would have been hunted down and pinned again. I think Ronin showed some pretty good restraint here considering that the Pittie was a bit over the top. That could have been a fight.

@@markjansson thanks for this extra context. yeah I really did see the pittie as more of an awkward dog mixed between some posturing and trying to feel out the situation... the whole 'dominant' thing is definitely overused and I think many dogs are misunderstood because of it

@@NoOne-hg1qc Preach! And say it louder for the people in the back! This guy only sees his dog interactions through the lens of "dominance" and that's part of what makes him such a tool biscuit. I have my own rant about the extreme overuse of the word "correction" when it comes to dog interaction and training. I'd strike it from the lexicon right after dominance if I could wave a wand.

1:05 Lots of dogs are still intact to allow healthy structural growth. I don’t breed mine, but I leave them intact until they’re grown (preferably two years old). We can’t check hips, elbows, etc. until they’re two.

I have a question about the ears. My GSD has a goofy curled back and sideways ear position. I usually see it when we’re at the vet, and she’s trying to hide behind me. She also does it when she’s getting head massages, which she loves (she lies down on her back with her paws up). The curled ears make both of our vets giggle (she’s a silly, goofy, happy natured dog who doesn’t like ear cleanings, but otherwise likes her vets; they never muzzle her). Tl;dr- is there an illustration of ear positions and what they usually mean? Most of the time, her ears are up like antennas (see pfp up close; she’s relaxing on her throne, but aware that I’m pointing the phone camera at her).

Yes I agree that it's a good thing to keep your dog intact until they're fully grown! I don't trust this guy bringing his dog to a dog park being intact, just because accidents can happen, but that's just me being nitpicky! 😅 I would look up dog body language chart in Google images. Those are usually the best way to see the different mindsets dogs are in and roughly what they are thinking feeling at that moment.

@ , We stopped going to dog parks, because of unpredictable dogs and inattentive caretakers. I’ve been looking for a local pool to rent. Only one (the Lab) swims. The niblet likes to wade at the beach, but we moved too far from the dog beaches (and the closest one has a lot of dogs). I’ll figure something out so Lily can swim. My BIL won’t let girl dogs in the yard, because of pee spots on the grass. Grr. I should invest in a small pool, for myself and Lily. When I checked yesterday, sniff spots with pools were getting $35/hour per dog. Addit: I don’t think it’s nitpicky to avoid situations that could cause a dog emotional or physical trauma.

@SuziQ. Oh that's a great idea I'm sure Lily would love that!

FWIW, I didn't find anything about face nudging being an appeasement mechanism. It seems more like a thing a dog does with its established owner/leader, not with strange dogs. It may look the same on the surface I guess. Much easier to find information on Mals and their interactions with other dogs. There, the record is that they *can* be okay but don't bet on it. They're high energy and we're initially bred to serve herding purposes, and that type of energy doesn't go over well with other dogs sometimes. It doesn't with mine for sure. Ronin would have gotten the ass whooping of his life if he had tried that face-to-face pushing and the aggressive undercarriage sniffing with my dog. That's not a boast, just a fact. My guy would likewise get his ass kicked if he tried some of his cocky stuff with bigger and stronger dogs too. They're out there. This guy has way too much invested in the idea that his dog is super tough. Ronin is a few classes away from being anything special as far as that goes.
