Just came here from Instagram, this was very helpful. There are many similarities with my labrador. These people are working really hard. Brilliant owners. Thank you so much for this video Adam and Aaron!

Loose leash walking and basic obedience is the key before reactive dogs can move on further into desensitisation. Speaking from experience. My dog became reactive due to an unfortunate account with another very reactive dog + repetition pattern where we would meet that dog twice a day + I got scared, my dog freaked out. Then it progressed to my dog being reactive to all dogs in our street and neighbourhood. Off leash, he's great with other dogs. As a note, corrections while in a highly fixated and reactive state, made the entire situation even worse. Anyways, the point is, we had to go back to basics. Practice and proof loose leash walking. However! Another key here is having an experienced trainer and another dog (ideally, multiple dogs) with whom you can practice. You need other dogs you know are chill and composed to practice these beginning stages of desensitisations. Unfortunately, a lot of us don't have dogs to "borrow" so to say and help our dog. To practice this repetition of calm behaviour. Instead, I keep running into other dogs who also react and then it's a total s* show. And I'm aware, the more these situations my dog gets the more severely he's going to react and built up a pattern. Another way to cope for us is to get in the car and drive somewhere else for us to walk, go potty, and train, run.

My dog is the same way but on top of this she’s a cattle dog so she tends to redirect and nip me 😢 wish this dog was a bit more reactive so i could see how to help my dog. This dog is an angel compared to mine 😂 How did u get your dog to walk nicely? Mine just keeps pulling no matter how many times i pop the collar or do turn arounds…

What do you do if the dog is so fixated and “zoned” out meeting another dog that the treats just fall out of his mouth.

Focus on where his threshold is. There will be a certain line they cross where the fixation kicks in. Barney in this video was already tense and fixated the moment the other dog walked in, so catch your boy before he gets to that point. Desensitisation can be a long process when you cannot control the environment they're in. In this example, they're in an isolated car park with a socialised and calm dog, which is ideal. Unfortunately when it comes to deconditioning a reaction, this is what they need. Learn where his threshold is, create a controlled environment (as much as you can), train their attention to come back to you and reward with a really delicious treat - little bits of roast chicken, smelly fish, cooked liver, chopped up hot dogs, chunks of cheese - whatever they don't normally have (and use this treat for only this particular challenge and never at any other time) making sure the other dog stays outside his range. Gradually he will associate not reacting within a smaller and smaller range, but take it really slow, keep track, and when starting a new session don't start where you left off but go back a step. Two really good cues to train are "Look at me" and "Look at that". Best of luck!
