What a lovely Beagle. I think I looked more at the dog than at the instructor, which is actually the aim of handling so even though this was a tutorial I think the dog came through.

your best bet is to arrive early and watch which patterns they use in prior classes. their procedure rarely changes. best of luck!

Thanks so much for the set of videos ~ I'd like to see how you'd handle a dog that shakes their head when starting out in a gaiting pattern in the ring ? Those ears flopping around wastes precious time! Also, could you show how to show the dog's bite efficiently, and how to hold the head to allow a judge to check the bite themselves?

it always depends on the size of your dog and what they have grown accustom to, remember the all breed ring is not the junior handling ring, the same rules do not apply. do the best for YOUR dog.

The only question I have, and maybe an experienced handler can help me out as a novice, but how do you know what pattern the judge wants? Do they tell you as they wave their hand at you? I believe the down and back is normal for after they check your dog, correct? I'll be handling my dog in the ring myself for the first time in a few weeks, and I'm worried of screwing up =P

I was confused too. He did a down and back and then said "don't do it this way" (i.e. the way he just did it)

Don't watch your dog, you can feel if they are pacing versus trotting through the lead - huge pet peave of judges....
