Sled dogs are quite a bit stronger than you may realize. They may look small, but they are quite powerful. Their main advantage however is that they can run for hours and hours. They are endurance athletes. Malamutes are much larger and were used in the past but they can't produce as much speed and endurance as more modern breeds of sled dogs. Sled dogs also need a good bit of fur, which pits and rots don't have. Temps on the trail could be -40 with a howling wind.

@GuitarOcarina64 I would say that it's more like the dogs are obsessed with it. Have you ever known a dog who all they want to do is fetch a ball, and will do it all day long until they drop from exhaustion? They are also very aware that it's a pack activity and they want to go with the pack. I think that is why they all go crazy when the musher is selecting which dogs they are going to use. They don't want to be left behind and they want to run with the pack.

Street Mushing is simple as long as you have a strong high energy dog. This kind of mushing is a lot of fun but can be dangerous, my first run on skateboard i crashed and burned and didn't let go of my dog, and ended up being dragged forty three feet followed by a fractured wrist. The cause was a malfunction with my bearings inside my wheel. Im not saying you will always get hurt when doing this but on your first runs till you get used to it wear some safety gear. This is simple choose a large dog with high energy to burn. make sure he or she knows their rights and lefts and stops and slow downs, then your one step closer. Then its Choosing your transportation this includes bikes, skateboards, longboards, scooters, and rollarblades. bike are the safest because of the nice brake they have. Then all its left to do is get your dog harnessed up. The harness i use is a petco brand its meshed wide chested to reduce irritation when the dog is pulling, it cost $35-45. last thing use a longer leash just in case your dog does any sudden stops i couldn't find a long leash i had to make my own out of rope, and a strong clip. I'd show you a video on street mushing but my Girlfriend wont video tape me. She is scared i might crash again. and i kinda have no friends. I hope this was a lot help to you. if you need anymore help feel free to message me again.

This was a half day class with two runs. One with an instructor, and one on his own sled. I think a days worth of mushing gets you to the point of being able to handle a sled on easy terrain, with no obstacles, navigation or problems. I suspect a large part of mushing is being ready and able to deal with all sorts of problems. Broken equipment, dog fights, moose, oncoming teams, harsh weather, harsh terrain, getting lost in a maze of trails.. I think it would take a few weeks to go solo.

@Dblitz70 The dogs are much stronger than your average house dog. It's very common for the dogs to be so excited and anxious to go, that they push so hard with their back legs that their front end rises up in the air because the musher is holding the top of the harness. If they weren't pushing so hard forward, they wouldn't end up in the air. These dogs may look small but it's very hard to hold them back.
@BlitzAlaska12 жыл бұрын
The best advice I can give you is to contact mushers in your area and ask if you can learn from them while you help with their dogs. If you are interested in testing out your pet dog, you might want to try a sport known as skijoring. If your dogs are capable of pulling you and not being too distracted, they may have potential us sled dogs. This would be a low cost way to find out. Buying a sled and all the equipment is a much higher initial investment.
@JediTiga3 жыл бұрын
If you think about it the dogs really don't have to be that bulky they just need a lot of stamina. Once the sled gets going it's not too hard for the dogs to pull along as its momentum carries it over the flat snow pretty easy.

Plus that they love doing work
@BlitzAlaska13 жыл бұрын
@MrReeg16 it may look that way from the video, but really if you ever tried to manage one of these dogs you would find out very quickly that they can pull you over and get away. They are remarkably strong for their size, and they think nothing of being held by the harness or by being picked up swiftly. You'll notice only the professional musher picks up the dogs and puts them in the truck. This is because there is a technique to it so as to never harm or injure the dogs. Go to Alaska and see!

Their coats don't look that thick/warm such as a Syberian Husky? Different kind of Husky?
@BlitzAlaska9 жыл бұрын
They are an intentional mutt. Mushers breed in a variety of breeds you wouldn't expect. They are breeding for performance, endurance intelligence etc. All of these dogs live outside full time and are very used to temperatures of Alaska. When they are running, they are usually too hot. It's when they are at rest that they need fur coats. In a proper mushers dog yard they have a doghouse with straw in it. Frequently the dogs ignore the doghouse unless it's -30f or colder. They mostly use it as a pedestal to bark at each other from. Husky's look great in pictures, but lack the endurance that mushers need. I hope that answers your question.

Taken from Iditarod.com Karen Ramstead SLED DOG POSITIONS You’ve probably seen a photo or video of Iditarod sled dogs pulling a musher across the frozen tundra or through a snow-capped forest. Or maybe you’ve been lucky enough to see them in the flesh…er…the fur. What you may not know is that each sled-dog pair plays a different role in navigating the sometimes difficult trails and challenging terrain faced by racing teams. The dogs are positioned in pairs on either side of a gangline, or towline, that attaches to their harnesses and to the sled. Iditarod rules state that a musher may start a race with a maximum of 16 dogs and a minimum of 12 dogs on the gangline. At least six dogs must be on the line at the finish of the race. Most Iditarod mushers will start the race with the maximum. More dogs = more pulling power. Sled Dog Positions Here are brief descriptions of each position pair: Lead dogs: Perhaps the most critical part of the team, lead dogs set the pace and keep the other dogs on the trail. They are the dogs that respond to the musher’s commands of “gee” (right turn) and “haw” (left turn). Lead dogs must be alert and intelligent so they can find and follow the trail when it is covered over with snow. They do so through smell, sensing where other teams have passed, and feel, by feeling with their feet the packed trail beneath the loose snow covering. They also keep the other dogs in the team moving by pulling the gangline taut. In the past, some Iditarod mushers used only one lead dog. Today, it is more common to see two. Swing (or point) dogs: Positioned directly behind the lead dogs, the swing dogs help steer the team around corners. As lead dogs make a turn, it is not uncommon for the other dogs to want to jump off the trail to follow them. The swing dogs pull the team in an arc that keeps the other dogs on the trail and brings the sled and musher safely around a corner. Team dogs: These are the team’s brawn. They pull the sled and maintain speed. On average, Iditarod sled dogs pull 300 to 500 pounds (including sled, supplies, and musher). There are several pairs of team dogs, depending on the size of the sled-dog team. Wheel dogs: These are the two dogs closest to the sled. They are usually the largest of the dogs because they are the first to take on the weight of the load being pulled, especially during starts and climbs. Wheel dogs should be even-tempered as they must withstand the constant slamming of the sled runners behind them. It is not uncommon for mushers to switch their dogs’ positions during a race. Some dogs make better leaders in certain weather conditions but not others. Sometimes, after a long run, a musher may wish to give a lead dog a break. Dogs who are fighting may need to be split up, or a female in heat may need to be moved away from the males. Sometimes during a race, after a few dogs have been dropped and a team becomes smaller, a single lead dog may be used instead of two.

How do they tell the dog to turn left, turn right, stop, faster??
@BlitzAlaska3 жыл бұрын
Gee - Command for right turn. Haw - Command for left turn. Come gee! Come haw! - Command for 180-degree turns in either direction. Line out! - Command for lead dog to pull the team out straight from the sled (mostly used when hooking or unhooking dogs). Mush! Let's go! All right! Hike! - Various commands to get the dog team going. Trail! - Shouted to oncoming mushers or snowmobile users to request right-of-way on the trail. Whoa! - Command used to halt the team.

As opposed to training them to be obedient in getting from the back of the truck to where you want them to go with the ropes? I'm not judging, it just looks like a lot of work.

They are so anxious to go out they would pull you over. They are working dogs, not really pets. It would be impossible to train 30 dogs to not pull between the truck and the sled, but then pull like crazy when they in front of the sled. They live to pull so training them to not pull wouldnt work. Mushers rotate dogs, so many have 20 to 30 dogs. Thats already a tremendous amount of work to feed, water, and maintain their health. Obediance training them is not feasible. Another aspect is they see themselves as the pack. The musher may be the top dog and leader, but the dogs have their own set of dog rules, and dog behaviors. They are friendly, but they are also more a part of the pack than obedient pets. I can assure everyone that these dogs are not harmed, or even bothered by how they are handled. By the way, these are not my dogs. I was working with the musher to make this video.

Do you teach them to go left or right on your command? how do you do that?
@AndrewLeSynt7 жыл бұрын
HeadBlasted yes actually they train sled dogs for left and right, basics
@tehyamoberg39427 жыл бұрын
They teach them haw (left) and gee (right) but before u teach a dog u should memorize that first otherwise u and your dogs will be confused.
@roserogers33366 жыл бұрын
Left is "haw" right is "gee" forward or faster is "hike" and slow down is "woah". Best to start is when you take your dog for a walk say the command as you turn. When they look the right way or speed up and go give them praise and a treat. If you have a bike that's good to start with too since you can steer and break if needed. Find a harness that puts all the pressure on your dogs chest rather than the neck. Bungee leashes are also good since it reduces the shock when your dog pulls.

Funny that they are so strong that you have to hold them up on their hind legs to walk them.

2:15 Jesus Christ she didn’t have to drag the dog like that
@camk68475 жыл бұрын
Dragging them by their scruff actually doesn’t hurt dogs like most people think, it’s one of the best ways to carry them actually
@theremycrocks68615 жыл бұрын
As puppies that’s how their mother carries them, their scruff is meant for that + the harness puts all of the pressure on the strongest part of their body so it doesn’t hurt them at all!

She said in 4:42 you have to hold like that or they will drag you . Hold them like that is like taking them out of 4 wheel drive
