It's unfortunate that the negative is so damaged for such an iconic film. I'm glad that we at least got some kind of upgrade. It will probably be the same with Blair Witch Project or Paranormal Activity. These films were shot on such a low budget with low quality cameras. 4k can only do so much. I'm still going to upgrade this one because that original SF just doesn't cut it .

Yah, it’s always a shame when a great film is not handled or stored properly, so when it comes time for a new restoration they find it’s severely damaged or on very low grade films stock so it causes issues with the new 4K. But overall it’s still much better than the previous Blu Ray releases were, so that’s good!👍

Dog Soldiers was shot on 16mm that is why it didn't look great in previous releases. If it was shot on 35mm then it would look a lot better. Neil Marshall himself mentions this in his commentary or in the making of documentary. The picture has been restored to the best its looked so far.

I have got Second Sights special boxset, it is one of my favourite all time Werewolf films, Sean Pertwee is brilliant. I first got this video n dvd.

I agree it’s a great hidden gem 💎 of a werewolf movie. Now some might disagree, but I like this a lot better than An American Werewolf in London. I enjoyed the banter between the soldiers & the overall pace of this film a lot more too! 🐺

You're the Best reviewer EVER! You're videos are always so spot on& acurate. I finally received my Dog Soldiers 4k & I have had the exact same issues with the Dolby Vision & I was playing it on my Vizio 4K tv & Panasonic UB820 so I changed it over to HDR10 & it changed the image drastically & looked soo much better in HDR10. Its exactly as you talked about in this video very overly dark in Dolby vision & thanks for explaining & covering this because it was very very helpful. If it wasn't for your amazing video, I would have thought this Dog Soldiers 4K was a horrible release & would have returned it. But once I switched it to HDR instead of the Dolby it looked great in HDR10! I only ever trust your review videos because you take the time to share all these hidden details that no one else even talks about, Thanks so very much!

A great review. You really deserve far more subscribers than you currently have. This is a movie I have been waiting for years to own on a higher-fidelity disc here in the UK. The DVD I own was okay for its time but I cannot watch that version anymore on a large screen 4K TV as it looks really poor. This 4K disc might not be perfect but I'll take it for what it is. I pre-ordered the limited edition from Amazon which comes with a 108-page book and other collectibles. I really love this movie. It really does a lot with its miniscule budget. There's good action, some great humour and fine acting. What's not to like?

That's why I imported it a while ago from scream factory and tbh it didn't look great then but that's more to do with it being shot on 16mm not 35mm.

Only movie of his i didn't like of this director was doomsday, but i bet if i rewatched now (haven't seen since i was like 19) it wouldn't be bad. The Descent definitely deserves it though.

@@bigsteve8921 I know you were referencing the director of Dog Soldiers Neil Marshall, I was meaning I hope we get those other 2 films on 4K before any of the rest of his films lol!!! I love dog soldiers & I did enjoy Doomsday but it wasn’t the best film ever, just kinda Saturday fluff movie type! I feel like we get a lot of more offbeat stuff sometimes on 4K because the cost for licensing the film to release on 4K is a lot less expensive! That’s why we see a lot less bigger older films come out as often it seems as smaller budget films!

I'm happy to report that the Second Sight Dolby Vision doesn't have the brightness problem you observed from the american release. I watched it on a LG CX in filmmaker mode. The examples you showed were not too dark but looked similar to your HDR10 examples. I'm relieved! :D

Here in the US if i got the choice between Second Sight and a US release of a movie, i always choose Second Sight This release and the Texas Chainsaw Massacre that i have from them are my pride and joy out of all my movie collection. They are killing it over in the UK, Their releases are way better with the collectors box sets.

It’s not the absolute worst I have seen in Dolby Vision, but like I explained in this review the HDR10 is very decent looking & a enjoyable viewing experience. By far a big upgrade over the older Blu Ray releases & by far the best this film is ever going to look! So it’s definitely a fun werewolf movie to watch!

my tv has dolby vision settings that you can adjust, in 3 brightnes levels, maybe you guys should check if your tv gives you options, i put it in dolby vision bright and looked great! in dolby vision normal it did look too dark and kida washed out... i have the 2nd sight btw.. i think the reviewer did a good job, dog soldiers will never look like blade runner 2049 but i think it does look great on its own way, the 16mm cinematography is gritty and works wonders for the film, i think it does look amazing in a way other similar productions will never look (evil dead 1 comes to mind) so i would give the transfer a solid 8 out of 10 (10 being something like blade runner 2049)

I have a Sony A95L and I agree, dolby vision dark is way too dark on everything I watch, dolby vision bright is the way.

So. Did you actually compare the Second Sight disc? Sounds like the Dolby Vision pass has an encode/authoring flaw. Does the Second Sight disc feature the same flaw? Maybe I missed you mention that. I understand they both stem from the same transfer, but I haven't heard whether or not they are literally the same disc/press. Thanks!

So as I covered and explained at the beginning of this video, directly from Scream/Shout & Second Sight both are the exact same 4K master & transfer. As far as how the discs themselves are manufactured I would have absolutely zero clue because I don’t do their disc authoring work or physically work directly for either company. I can only analyze & review what’s been physically sent to me for review & I have no control whatsoever on how discs are created or manufactured. Though as I talked about extensively in this video it does seem to have something enabled on the disc that when playing Dolby Vision through some 4K TVs & Players makes it a very dark image, but once it’s switched & plays in HDR10 it looks good & has none of those same issues! I have had quite a few different people who have shared they have gotten their Scream discs & can also confirm they have had the exact same issues as I reported in this video originally. I hope this helps you understand all of this a bit better!

@@InSearchofPhysicalMedia It seems like Second Sight’s disc doesn’t have HDR :( there’s no mention of it on the back and it doesn’t seem to be an option even when I turn Dolby vision off on my player. Kinda disappointing because the rest of this set was a no brainer and typically Dolby Vision seems to beat out HDR 10.

Thanks for the great review. I am subscribing. I love this movie (one of my favorite low budget werewolf movies, right up there with Ginger Snaps), but I guess I am a special case for this release. I do NOT own at this time any 4k equipment. Just a regular flat 1080 flat screen with a PS4 blu-ray player. So I will NOT be able to enjoy the UHD disc with the HD10 upgrade. Will be watching the Blu-ray disc only. But I am also upgrading from my original old DVD version of the movie, so I am a bit on the fence on if the upgrade will be worth the money. Also, I am more than a bit hard of hearing in my old age, and was wondering if the "English Subtitles" listed was actually SDH or not. Thanks!

🤗Welcome to my KZbin Channel! To answer some of your questions, You will still see a huge improvement in the Blu Ray over the old DVD because as I explained in this video the Blu Ray still includes the new restoration just technically dumbed down to 1080p HD. But over the old DVDs it will look massively better even on this standard Blu Ray. Also, Yes it looks like it has subtitles listed as SDH so you should be good on that as well.
