Wow. I never thought to do this. Thank you very much to Dr. Ian Dunbar and to whomever filmed this. I have taught my dog to wait at the door, but never this. It will be helpful because everyone speeds in this neighborhood. There are kids, babies, and animals around... yet people by at like 40 mph. We are not even on a main road. No one knows how to drive slower than 25 it seems.

What is it with all those CM fans, what is it you people dont get?? Dr. Ian Dunbar is legend, he is the best of the best within dogtraining and dogbehavior. Mr. Dunbar's teaching has taught millions and millions of pro dog trainers and behaviorists world wide! How dare you put Cesar and Dr. Dunbar in the same "box" What can Cesar show in his dog pro Résumé? Nothing but self-taught dog abuser Here's a little from Dr. Dunbar's Résumé Dr. Ian Dunbar is a veterinarian, animal behaviorist, and writer. He received his veterinary degree and a Special Honors degree in Physiology & Biochemistry from the Royal Veterinary College (London University) and a doctorate in animal behavior from the Psychology Department at the University of California in Berkeley, where he spent ten years researching olfactory communication, the development of hierarchical social behavior, and aggression in domestic dogs. Dr. Dunbar is a member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, the International Society for Applied Ethology, the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior, the California Veterinary Medical Association, the Sierra Veterinary Medical Association, and the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (which he founded). I crosed over in the 90' and I'll never go back to the aversiv BS. Thanks to Dr. Dunbar

I thank you for your gracious response. I haven't seen Cesar at all - well okay, just a bit of a look at his series when it was on telly here (Australia) a while back! Guilty as charged. I will remedy that. But please do watch Dunbar's TED talk because regardless of which camp you are in I am certain it will 'resonate' with you and even more certain you'll enjoy it. I'm pretty sure the two experts agree about the fundamentals re force, harm, humiliation etc as training tools. Thanks!

I don't actually have any favourite stuff except for any episode where he rehabilitates red zone dogs at his facility and his dog walking tips. There's where he is at his peak of tips and expressing his knowledge.

@JohnnyRu131 He handles the Pittbull pretty wel and so does Cesar. So in my eyes they are both good only the diffrence is that Ian is a dog trainer and Cesar is a dog rehabilitator.

walking the dog: When I walk my dog onleash, there are two type of walking: 1) heeling, reserved for either getting quickly from point A to B, for example to a bus station OR when coming to and crossing a street. 2) loose-leash walking, where I allow the dog to sniff, look, ponder, do dog things (poop,pee) as long as the leash is not fully extended. Greeting people or dogs is first subject to a heel approach and a sit-stay. From that standpoint, focus is only necessary by type 1 - at key points.

A really good episode of Cesar's earlier work is the 3rd episode of the 3rd season of the Dog Whisperer. If you can find that episode, it is a decent example of some of Cesar's work,. while also rather unique in his own work, because of the controversy surrounding E-Collars. In this episode, a farming family has a herding dog that puts herself in potentially fatal situations, and Cesar only instructs them on the proper use of the tools the family has already been using.

No, it's a Martingale collar. Look it up. It does not choke. And his so-called dramatic display was extremely effective - the dog stopped in it's tracks, just as he wanted it to. Very useful in an emergency situation where one only has time to react and not think. And most people will yell, not shhh. As to focus - it's clear, that the dog focuses, just not 100%. this is philosophical. On a walk, why should the dog focus? When heeling (crosswlak, for example, probably, but not on a normal walk.

Hi There are many different reasons why a dog may not be recalling. The method to rectify will depend upon this. It is usually because the dog has more interest in something other than its walker. Find something the dog wants more than anything else and use this to reward for this example.
@mootopia15 жыл бұрын
That is a martingale collar. Yes, it serves as an aversive but has limited capability of restraining a dog's neck or causing harm. Some trainers use it as a tool of control. Flat collars just as well can be used as an aversive-- in fact, flat collars can often do more damage than the martingale when used inappropriately. It isn't the tool (the collar); it's the method. Oh, by the way Ian Dunbar is a veterinarian (DVM) and has a Ph.D. in animal behavior. So, there are your credentials. :-)

I urge anyone interested in canine behaviour to watch Horizons 'The Secret Life of a Dog. Its on I Player now. You know when working with dogs and their owners and they have a behaviour issue, whilst warning against humanising, I always say "how would you deal with this if it were a child and not a dog." Then adapt the answer to dealing with a canine. In 9/10 cases you have a humane remedy!
@NatashaHope1715 жыл бұрын
If you did it the first time the dog might walk back, but he wouldn't have a clue what he did wrong or what he's supposed to do. By having him sit repeatedly, than showing your dismay when he didn't he learns. Not saying this is the best method, just wanted to point that out.
@hinteregions11 жыл бұрын
It's quite clear to me that you yourself have NOT learned the 'first thing' about dog training. Watch Ian Dunbar's talk on TED.com. After you've seen that come back and tell us whether you doubt this man's credibility or methods.
@hinteregions11 жыл бұрын
I can't put the link so, go to TED.com and just type Ian Dunbar into search. The talk is the one called 'Ian Dunbar on dog-friendly dog training'. Can you give me a link to your favourite Cesar stuff? This is really cool :D
@sollywolpol13 жыл бұрын
@Mewsaphine This may be a bit late in replying BUT Cesar is often dealing with last chance dogs. He does NOT hang the dogs, shock collars are used when there is no other method likely to work and the dogs life is in danger if it carries on the unwanted behaviour! He uses it correctly i.e. when the dog is 100% focused on the unwanted behaviour. To be perfectly honest you are looking at the what is done NOT HOW it is carried out and WHY it is carried out.
@fergie12233311 жыл бұрын
Well worded, not full of insults unlike others. You have shown me respect now I shall show you some. Ian Dunbar I have never in my life heard of until now. That is honest. Watch the dog whisper, several seasons of episodes of him helping the dog psychologically with pack mentality rather than acting shocked. This dog is very badly behaved. examples 2:02 the dog walks in front. 0:33 dog blatantly ignores him. 0:48 dog just walks off.

why is everyone always comparing him to ceaser? why not compare, ceaser with zak george, kinkopup, or any other +R trainer? i just dont get it... stop hateing, +R works for alot of ppl, as do ceasers methods of domination. all i have to say is why so much Hate. simply if you dont like it or agree with it, dont watch, listen, or bother with it for that mater....
@Sevaekor11 жыл бұрын
I say "unique" in my previous comment, because out of over 300 episodes, and over 1,000+ dog cases, Cesar has only ever accepted the use of an Electronic Collar maybe a total of 5 times. I feel that while Ian Dunbar is an amazing trainer, he is better suited for the sort of average family with a home dog type of trainer. Cesar Millan I feel can adapt his leadership philosophy to a wider range of situations. I could be very mistaken, but that is the way I see it.
@markmaggot12 жыл бұрын
Yes but cesars technique is dangerous and often ends in somone getting.bit. I doubt the people who are on that show actually get lifetime results.

Dune is actually Ian Dunbar's personal pet American Bulldog,.. or at least,... that's what everyone says Dune is so he doesn't get instantly euthanized by the UK's breed specific legislation. Regardless of politics, Dune is an American Bulldog that could very very easily pass for a pitbull type dog.
@hinteregions11 жыл бұрын
I think a more balanced way of looking at this is to see that both are highly qualified experts. But I do not think Cesar has seen quite so far as to the ethics and philosophy that is the successful foundation of Dunbar's methods. You've obviously seen a lot of Cesar and nothing of Dunbar - a bit hypocritical, no, considering the charge you make? Watch Dunbar's talk on TED. Then ask yourself, if by then you really need to, why it was Dunbar they invited, and not Cesar.
@hinteregions14 жыл бұрын
1) The man is a veterinarian - as opposed to, say, a volunteer at the SPCA. This is 'credentials' enough, I think. It's either 'Caesar' or it's 'Cesar'. 2) Keeg, you are aggressive and you are rude. These seem to be YOUR principal credentials, and they seem to me not quite sufficient for you to contribute to this debate. What example can you possibly give to any dog, or child, or anyone at all? Before you listen to Dr Ian Dunbar again, have a little listen to yourself.

Shit...this is bizzare. Ian Dunbar is great at writing about dogs, and I love reading what he says about them...but in this video, his interaction with the dog is like that of someone with no experience with them. What's with all that "hello? hello?" just because the dog isn't looking at him. Weird. And he gives the dog affection, but the dog clearly isn't into it, clearly isn't enjoying the affection. The #1 key to giving affection is to first make sure the animal actually wants to receive it.
@JamiePenrithDogTraining8 жыл бұрын
+Rebecca Hicks Ian Dunbar isn't a dog trainer. .... He's a vet who gave decent puppy advice, cashed in on it and then believed his own marketing, that's it. Nice guy, good businessman, but no dog trainer - His dog evidently knows it too.
@jamiehollaway54306 жыл бұрын
Asking for eye-contact should be part of any dog's training regime. If you can't call the dog to even look at you, how would you know he wants to listen? In his other works, Dunbar talks about phasing out food rewards (not entirely) to build reliability. It involves the handler seeing how much the dog is willing to work for one treat, for starters. Eventually, you use a separate marker (like "good") that's different from your marker you use when you give a treat every time ("yes" or a click), so you don't "wear it down."

Hmmmm for the person that says he is the first to teach people to train a puppy as soon as it's eyes open!!!! HELLO!!!! Cesar Millan ALWAYS SAYS THAT! The mother dog trains right away, he preaches that! You don't wait to train! Just cuz you have a piece of paper doesn't mean anything! I'm not impressed by him at all. Everything he says is the same as CESAR! Cesar has been doing it for 20+years too! Ian is not as good as everyone says he is!

come on! are you serious?! so you think the poor dog has any idea what you wanted from him?! just traumatizing the dog about street does not show him his boundries! if i would make those sounds the very first time, the dog would walk back right away! the funny part is that at the end the dog is totally in command and he is NOT. if you notice the dog is walking ahead of him and pulling him. that is the first thing you learn in dog training

You've got to be joking? Cesar Millan is an excellent dog trainer who grew up with dogs and learned dog psychology from experience dogs rather than at some school. Sure this guy is a decent trainer maybe one of the best but Cesar is better. Obviously your some Dunbar knob jockey so you will pint out all Cesar's faults, go ahead but at least I can acknowledge other dog trainers achievements unlike you. The first thing dog owners should train their dog to walk on the lead. what is this? 2:02
