If it’s a puppy then that’s where you attach it to a long lunge line (not a retractable lead they’re very dangerous) there’s no excuse for having an untrained dog off lead in a public area

Ugh as a dog owner myself, there is nothing worse than irresponsible dog owners! They act as if the law somehow doesn't apply to them?? An off-leash dog in an on-leash area can be a danger to so many things; people who are allergic or scared of dogs, wildlife, horses and their riders, other dogs who might not be as friendly and don't want an unfamiliar dog to suddenly come running at them?? It honestly boils my blood how ignorant and selfish these people can be. My dog has developed some leash aggression (that I'm trying to train away, sigh) and my anxiety goes through the roof when a loose dog comes running at us, cause I don't know how my dog will react :/

As the owner of a dog who is dog aggressive (& always on leash) it does my head in when there is an off leash, uncontrollable dog. The owners are always like "it's ok, he's friendly!" & I'm screaming "mine isn't!". It is completely irresponsible & selfish & makes me feel like I'm a bad owner for having a dog aggressive dog. If your dog doesn't come back to you the first time you call it, every time you call it, it shouldn't be off leash. Simple. Glad no-one was hurt in this case.

Recently took my dog for a longer walk than usual because of the recent nice weather when we spotted a neighbors dog bolting towards us. Always gives you that sinking feeling in the stomach doesn’t it? Just that immediate thought of holy crap I hope this dog won’t bite me or my animal. Thankfully it let me grab it by the collar and lead it back to its owners. Also glad D didn’t kick that little dog too. I sure know my horse would’ve just to show off.

So this happened to me but the owner came up and practically smacked my horse, i'm glad he was clam because he isn't very friendly to new people. Her reasoning for smacking him was that he almost hurt her dog.😶

I own a jack Russel cross and she goes down to a stable when we go on holiday. She love it but respects horses and just ignores them we sometimes run into horses on walks and I always put her on the lead or hold her just in case the horse doesn’t like dogs. Plateaued always not matter how trained your dog is put them on a lead for everyone’s safety

I have social anxiety and situations like what you experienced make it much worse. JUST LIKE EVERYONE ELSE. I’d like to go for a nice ride where everyone is safe and respectful to each other. Including my dog walks but being that it is the public....we all know it doesn’t always go that way. I feel terrible for the youngsters . They get all excited and want to rush to the pets not aware of the dangers that can happen when approaching an unfamiliar animal. Anyhow be safe and have fun!

My horse will tolerate dogs but I can't say he wouldn't kick out /trample if the dog jumping up. Dog owners need to understand the dog is at risk of being killed by the horse. A horse can kill another horse with a kick (seen it happen) so a small dog would have no chance. I don't see why it would be the horse handler's fault if the dog got hurt - its the dog handler's fault.

You handled that situation amazingly,And for someone who has 3 big dogs myself who are pretty well trained but not super social with other dogs it makes me very mad when people don't have there dogs on leash especially on a walking trail where horses and other dogs could be it makes me very scared to go out on a trail because of this factor like why don't people understand the safety there lucky D is so calm and was under control because anything could happen animals are so unpredictable especially dogs and horses like please at least bring a leash just in case but i would just have your dog on a leash for safety purposes at end of the day everyone was safe and no one got hurt and that all that matters if you want your dog off leash you need to have amazing recall but please have your dog on leash if your on a public trail or any trail

This is so irritating.. I am a dog owner! If your dog doesn’t have 100% BOMB proof recall keep it on a lead!! How many more horses have to be attacked or dogs kicked before people get it! She had no recall over her dog! She had no control! It’s shameful. It also puts such a bad light on small dog owners and dog owners in general. If it means anything to you my dog (task trained assistance dog) has 100% recall and loves horses but will NEVER EVER be allowed near one without the riders permission! He ignores all animals and people unless I give him permission to approach after the owner of the animal agrees! It’s horrific what is happening lately with all these off lead dog attacks (like freddie the seal)..

One time I was riding a 1/2 breed thoroughbred horse (which had been previously used for horse racing) owned by my good friend. Riding along, two Rottweilerdogs came running out of nowhere, unexpectedly. Seeing those huge, snarling dogs, I just knew I had to immediately kick my horse into full gear! We ran, full blast, across a field and managed to outrun those dogs! Thank God I was on that thoroughbred horse.

Not really horse related... a story nonetheless. I was walking my dogs up in the mountains on their leash to get away from the city and to just relax.Keep in mind that is was snowy and the trails were covered, and my two dogs aren’t great with other dogs so this was a really stressful situation for me. (Still had a great time up there except for the ending) Being up in the mountains getting ready to leave and we were walking down a steep hill to get to our car in the parking lot. Suddenly a beautiful off leash male golden retriever ran up to us. Me not having stable ground, cornered on a hill, and two dog was not easy to deal with. Asked the guy to call his dog, him waiting a long time he to call his dog once and proceeded to watch from his car. Not doing anything. I couldn’t put myself between the dogs. I don’t know this dog, so I wasn’t sure what was going to happen. This male dog seemed to be showing a dominant stance over my dogs, mine not liking this they growled in response. Then dog abruptly runs back to the relaxed owner. The owner just says to his dog, “come on buddy you can’t do that.” Still not putting his dog in the car, still not leashed, I had to take the two dogs down the hill with them pulling and distracted by this dog staring at us, hoping The dog wouldn’t approach us again. A group of people were laughing at us. I felt so embarrassed and pissed, I just put them in the car and then we drove off. 😭 So please please please people who walk their dog off leash just because your dogs are friendly doesn’t mean everyone else’s are. If you do make sure your dog comes to you immediately. And if someone is asking you to get your dog, get off your ass and get your dog.

It’s quite annoying that people would be stupid enough that they would just let there kids and dogs ‘attack’ the horses and riders. Most of the horses are trained to be kind but would react if the were in pain or really uncomfortable.So don’t let any animal that you own with kids go near ANY horse apart from your own.

What i would do is make sure you really squeeze him on when you feel him slowing down, my horse does the same thing. I also carry a whip but never use it for more than a tap on her shoulder but if she can see the whip she carries on. But yeah just whenever you feel him slowing down really kick him on. Good luck !

All I can say is really try your best to push him on, keep kicking him when you feel him slowing down. If it's a fast trot I'd squeeze him with the heel rather than kicking because that could be quite difficult to kick in a fast pace. I can't say anything else really rather than to show him you are in charge and I'd you need to, carry a whip. Good luck!

nope! as long as he goes over it’s fine! As I said he hadn’t stopped in over 8 months at that bridge & sometimes when it’s too slippery it’s not worth the risk of him falling over those logs or spooking on the bridges! For some horses it could reinforce the behaviour it just depends on the reason why they are stopping, D is stopping to try and go home, so as long as you don’t let him go home he hasn’t got away with it!

Definitely doesn’t matter! But if you do want to think about it then just alternate and work on feeling the lead your on without looking. Don’t stress but make it practice!

I also remember at one time, we stopped because 3 Pugs ran up to the same horse I rode, and even behind them, it got to the point where we walked on forwards and 1 of the pugs ran up in front of us and went to another dog walker’s dog and told that dog off, the other 2 stayed behind us, luckily when we got passed the other dog walker, we actually did get bothered by the pugs again, really think they should’ve been all on leads and had not shot out of the woods towards the poor horse
