My 16 week old poodle puppy can become easily bored. I put these videos on if i can't give him the attention he wants because I have work to do. He loves them. He instantly goes quiet and settles down, gets up to double and triple check the dogs aren't behind the tv set. Satisfied they aren't, he refurns go his cushion, settles down to watch the show. Then after almost an hour, he wanders over to his crate to enjoy doggy story dreams. From the sounds of his dreams they are all good. I do wonder if he is learning dog behavior skills simply by watching these dogs around each other.

Fantastic! That's wonderful that your puppy gets so much from these videos. I believe he *is* learning social skills from the other dogs. There's a wide variety of complex interactions and every dog is different in how they behave. So there's a lot to learn. I've seen dogs without good social skills who come to the playgroups get better and better at it.

My dog loves these videos, I'm just wondering why Magnolia was kept in the playgroup and not removed as she was displaying very clear signs of being uncomfortable in that environment 😢 it looks like nobody was paying any attention to the wellbeing of the dogs
@DogPlaygroupStories10 ай бұрын
There are a lot of principles of running a playgroup that were developed by Dogs Playing for Life based on a huge amount of experience with animal shelter dogs. The goal for these dogs is to get them adopted/fostered and out of the shelter, which is unavoidably bad for them. These playgroups are amazing at improving the lives of most of the dogs that attend them. Many of those dogs start out afraid and uncomfortable, but a lot of them do eventually socialize with other dogs and become much more adoptable. The people running the playgroups decide when to send the dog back to their kennel based on a number of factors. Keep in mind that a lot of the dogs who are afraid in the playgroup are also afraid in their kennel, maybe even more so. The staff and volunteers do care a great deal for each dog. UPDATE: I just realized that Magnolia was being evaluated during this session, so the handlers were collecting notes for her future adopters. It's important to evaluate dogs after they're admitted to the shelter so we know which volunteers can walk them. We try to have each dog get personalized attention from someone every day. With the overcrowding, it's now usually every other day, except for dogs that really need daily attention.

They are all so cute and sweet! Aww magnolia! She was like a mom trying to get away from her puppies. Does she prefer people or just a favorite dog playmate?❤️❤️❤️
@DogPlaygroupStories8 ай бұрын
@khalove69 One of the reasons why I called this channel Dog Playgroup *Stories* is because of all the interwoven stories that go on while the dogs are interacting in these playgroups. That's a good description of Magnolia. She has the patience of a mother dog but would much rather interact with people. She later became a playgroup helper dog, helping to evaluate new dogs at the shelter. She was Dog of the Day at the shelter not long after this video was made and interacted with members of the public during the day. She ended up being fostered and is there still.

?Time stamp 1:05: 53 Did the worker just hit the white dog (Bonnie?) In the face with that gallon jug ??!!
@DogPlaygroupStories9 ай бұрын
@Karwen3 I went back to the original footage and watched it frame-by-frame. He grazed the side of Bonnie's head. The jug contains a small number of small rocks and is intended to make a lot of noise without weighing much. It was no worse than what the dogs routinely do to each other. The staff are trained by some of the best dog experts you'll find and I've sat through a 5-day training session with Dogs Playing for Life who pioneered shelter dog playgroups. I've read a lot of complaints in the comments but only one actually identified something the staff did wrong (it was about 3 months ago).

I still think it is too aggressive for a non aggressive dog to be smacked in the face with an object just for not obeying 1 minute earlier. I don't think the best trainers in the world would suggest such a move. I just happen to catch this. Usually I let this run on autopilot with my dog when I go to work. It just shocked me.
@DogPlaygroupStories9 ай бұрын
@@Karwen3 Yeah, I agree that it's not good. That's why I went back and looked at the original footage frame-by-frame. The Dogs Playing for Life trainers wouldn't do it because they advocate minimum adversives for very good reasons. You can see that Bonnie was very surprised and didn't take away the right lesson from the encounter.

Yeah, we get dogs with all kinds of behavior in the shelter. Very often they learn from the other dogs and improve. But a lot of times they don't.

Were Kobe and Persiphonie rescued from somewhere ? They both look extremely skinny.
@DogPlaygroupStories10 ай бұрын
The notes don't provide much info. Both dogs came into the shelter not long before the recording, so we didn't have much to do with their weight. Both dogs were adopted soon after the video recording.

As a person that works specifically in shelter behavior. Some of these dogs are showing clear signs of being uncomfortable. Tigger was dragged into that playgroup
@DogPlaygroupStories7 ай бұрын
The people here work with many thousands of shelter dogs and have been trained by the group that pioneered shelter dog playgroups, Dogs Playing for Life. I went through their 5 day hands-on training program and the handlers are doing mostly what they're trained to do. The funny thing is that despite people criticizing various things the team does, only one commenter actually pointed out something that was a mistake. We've had lots of dogs that began being uncomfortable and then in time became very well socialized with other dogs and become much more adoptable. It can save a dog's life.

My dogs love to watch your videos and i know you guys doing great job but that worker hit the dog with barrel,i dont think he know how to use it
@DogPlaygroupStories8 ай бұрын
I think you're referring to the interaction with Bonnie (small white pit bull), but there was also a similar interaction with a larger gray pit bull that I noticed. I watched the Bonnie interaction frame-by-frame back in mid January to see if there were any issues with it. Those jugs are filled with a small number of rocks so they make a lot of noise. They're actually very light. In the case with Bonnie, the handler grazed by Bonnie's head and it wasn't bad. It was the same with the gray pit bull. You could argue that the handler did make a mistake but it would have been not giving Bonnie enough of a verbal warning beforehand.

After giving it some thought, I've decided not to use music in the dog playgroup videos, but I do use it in the individual adoption videos for each dog.
