Yea I would've been super confused too. I don't understand gestures very well. You either have to talk to me or show me a sign with words or illustrations. My brain don't do sign language 😅

Personally, my brain can do some sign language and a fair bit of common militaristic or general hand gestures, but nothing that isn’t standard. Guessing is not something my brain likes to do in communication, which is why I am quite concise in speaking; ‘open to interpretation’ means open the door to confusion, when it comes to communication for me.

Honestly, I can understand how that would make no sense. I personally think that if one is capable of verbal communication, MAKE USE OF IT. It saves a lot of trouble and uncomfortable silence to just talk. We’re not some sort of masked horror film villain, after all. I can understand a few general militaristic and regular hand gestures fine, but anything that isn’t quite clear isn’t happening, because my mind doesn’t like to play guessing games with communication. Clear communication or utter (often awkward) silence are my only settings for interaction. It’s called the ‘tism, and trust issues associated therein. Which is why if someone isn’t talking, I then will start going through several language options like a user interface, including sign language, to see if language barrier is what’s happening. TLDR; I can speak bits of a few languages, plenty of two, but vague and obtuse communication will not do.

I am autistic (Aspergers) and I am in every way not fluent in silent suiter. Please forgive me if we meet at a con and it takes me ten minutes straight across multiple encounters to realize you are offering me fursuit hugs, this has legit happened before. Just because I build computers all afternoon to kill time does not mean I am not simultaneously dumber than carpet fuzz, especially in social situations.
