Top tip for puppy owners - play with their paws, tail, ears, jowls while they are young. Keep it part of fun at first, trying to keep them engaged on a toy or treat (so they don't equate paw touching to mouthing hands away) and then over time start doing it even when things are mellow. If you can make it a normal everyday occurrence they will be much less sensitive to it later on. Makes vet/groomer trips easier and adds a small but valuable level of tolerance towards unruly kids. Edit: To clarify, I understand that this won't prevent a dog from reacting to painful situations. It just helps being able to examine and position them in whichever way is necessary to make the actual act easier and minimize the stress leading up to it. That said this man did a great job! I was just hoping to potentially help others who might one day find themselves in a similar situation.

Everyday I did that with my dog and that's how I get away with cutting her nails and not to mention when she ate her food I pulled on her ears a little bit pulled the food away put my fingers in her food just wanted her to get used to people being around her and if God forbid I had one of my nieces and nephews over and they went over to her while she was eating and he's decided to play with her and if I wasn't looking decided to pull on her tail or her ears or something I didn't want her to snap!

I love that you backed off with his foot, as it clearly hurt, and the compassion that you showed him deserves great respect. My dogs are Northern breeds so they can get mouthy too. I give them breaks and then go back at it and if I don't succeed then the muzzle comes out. Sometimes a muzzle is needed because snapping is just a natural reaction when they are feeling pain. I always tell my vet feel free to use a muzzle. Especially when they're messing with their ears.

@andieisabella2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the shaking after just a minute wasn't a sign of stress. Curious as to how many years you have working with dogs or any animals. I have worked with power breeds for over thirty years, it's not hard to tell when someone is afraid of the dog they are working with. And if you have to hit a dog, you have already failed. If that dog bites out of fear, it is only the owners fault. Sadly, the dog will get the blame. Firmly believe we should start testing dog owners and require permits for people. Something has to be done to protect animals from humans who think they know things they don't.

Towards the end of the video, the analogy of leaving a session holds true with friends. If your friends can't leave a session in good hands in mind (even shaking/dabbing it up after) it means your friends don't truly care about you. That's the truth. If you are the type to wonder why, it's not always about you my friends. It's most likely the way the person reacts to you. You are great whether or not you have them as friends. You are suppose to be like the dog. Aggressive when your space is violated. This is how all animals are. But respect comes in all forms. No matter what you are. So if someone disrespect you, violates you, or even talks down on you, do defend yourself and be mindful. But if they aren't worth it, you'll know to walk/run away. The price you paid whether it's a good or bad price is what people will leave you with. It's the experience. That's the cost of things in life. Experience. And it comes with sessions always. No matter what people tell you, be mindful. Respect others and treat them like yourself. Because at the end of the day, you can't be yourself around people who don't respect or like you for that matter. And it's not about you, it's them. So unless you find a pattern of you doing wrong then it should make sense to you what needs to change. Don't let people try to change you. You change for yourself not others. You only submit when you know it's wrong. Like the dog he knows when to stop the pressure but also turn it back up if the wrong person offends it.

I’ve played with my corso’s paws as a puppy every day multiple times a day, and when he was about four months old he broke a toe, and it took me till he was just over two years old to be able to clip his nails, brush his feet, trim the hairs around his paws, and it was a lot of work. not only going back to square one with his paws, but going back to minus square10, because he associated pain whenever someone would touch his paws, especially his hind feet because that’s where he broke the toe. But he’s a lot better now still not a fan of nail trimming but he does allow me, but only me to trim. Consistency and follow through when he’s acting out I make sure he knows I do not appreciate it.

With animals they have to love you but have a level of FEAR, I’m not talking about abuse I’m talking RESPECT, and if you don’t, it may be a matter of time that your dog MAULS YOU….I tell EVERYONE, dogs are ANIMALS NOT KIDS….. @@ironmiketodd spot on. Yeah you have to watch out for the people who care more about animals then children. If my dogs even raised a lip at one of my kids we’d be going for a walk. My dogs listen well, I have a video on my channel where I had to recall them in a real life scenario, which they did because I control everything my dogs do. From when and how they eat, when they can enter the house or leave it, which rooms I want them it, where I want them to sit if I have company. So when I give them a command it’s basically automatically programmed into them, especially if my tone changes. Did you notice how much was his back leg shivering? Even when he was lying with his eyes closed that leg showed how much tension and stress he had. Fear and self defence biting when they're cornered is not a joke. Maybe try to reward him when you touch his paw- you touch- no reaction- marker reward (high value reward in the case of fear). If he reacts- NO and correction. Starts to get it- doesn't react- increase the reward and touch further next time. Reacts more and more- touch less intens next time. Don't stop the exercise when dog was biting- this way he learns next time I bite he will back of. End on a good note when dog is less tense, not reacting to touch and gets rewarded + affection. Giving affection while he was in a state of fear (shivering) just confirms his fear and increases it together with fear reactivity. Getting rid of fear takes time and patience. It's not about dominance by force, it's about trust. Respect and trust. Same with food aggression- respect and trust. Takes time and consistentie to fix it.
@stephk14663 жыл бұрын
But is hitting/smacking the dog a correction when they are scared/agitated?
@rugu-me3 жыл бұрын
@@stephk1466 Hitting is not a correction. A firm NO or a small pop on a leash at most (just to communicate to a dog what behaviour you do want from him and what don't). It's true that an insecure reactive dog if for example getting an e-collar correction for fear reactivity can associate this negative experience with the thing he was afraid of and this way confirm his fear ('I knew it was something to be nervous about'). The whole point of this exercise is rewarding when dog tolerates the touch till he starts to associate touching his feet with positive experience and feels at ease. If dog reacts or bites- means you moved to the next step too soon and have to go back to the kind of touching that dog was comfortable with.

very good point; i am a volunteer foster and whenever i get puppies (9 to 10wks old) i always make a point of desensitizing them by gently tugging at their toes every day; the first couple of days they always make a fuss but by the 4th day they accept it and usually don't even notice. This makes it easier for their future adopters to cut their nails, etc. (i also tug at their ears, legs, tails, etc. for the same reason in case their new family has young kids, etc.)

When it’s play time he has no problem at all, if he want to greet you with his paw the same, but if they have to clean him or everything related to touch his paws when he isn’t playful they have some problems...

Good point about backing off when he gets more annoyed. I have a chihuahua and she hates that I touch her front paws. She doesn't seem to like the sound of me clipping her nails or the sound of my cutting the hair shorter on her paws, even if I don't touch her paws while doing it. Once she gets irritated enough to either growl/yelp at me or nip me (harder than usual), that's the end of it since I don't want to keep her uncomfortable.

I randomly hold my dog and cats paws... like holding hand and paw and watching TV, they both see it as affection.

Dogs dont have hands so they use their mouth/teeth instead There is noway in the world he would bite you He is just saying "please dont touch my paw cause it hurts" Its best to sedate him or just the actual paw and then take out the thorn Imagine the intense pain he must have felt and he still remained quite calm 💛💚

I agree 100% you can't leave qith him biting you. He knows you're helping him. Putting him in a submissive position is perfect but you're showing him affection while making him submit🤔🤔🤔

I think he did not use full force. Otherwise dog would have become very stressed and maybe hurt

It’s a good dog.. i would use a muzzle for the removal and then do what u did, tho’ without the knee but just a hand pressure on the neck.. but ya’ good over all - would love to have a dog like that sometime in my life :)

So you failed to take out the splinter because your dog is a brat. That's how you reinforce bratty behavior, just so you know

A brat or just a dog in pain and extreme discomfort? There's a difference

Sometimes just placing a blanket or towel over his head so he can’t see who’s messing with his paw will de-escalate the situation. Or giving him a baby aspirin to help reduce his anxiety is better than getting bitten since dogs really only have one way to protect themselves. We had a Toy Poodle/Shitzu mix and all 9lbs of her were terrifying when she didn’t want to be touched.

Put a muzzle on the dog. How is this difficult? Protect him and you

But you never corrected him when he first snapped you let him continue to snap at you until it got dangerous, so dumb.

My Rottie does the barrel roll when I try to cut his claws and I did all the paw touching when he was a pup. He’s my third Rottweiler so I know what to do but he hates his paws touched. In fact all my Rotties weren’t fond of having their paws touched.

I had an Akita and A At Bernard, my Akita would give me her paws one at a time and let me cut her nails, I tried training the St Bernard in the same way but oh no, it was Wrestlemania every time lol, she was 13 stone so it was a tiring occasion but in general she never liked her paws being touch either
