I saw that breed and read the temperament and character characteristics and I just liked it and when I heard there was a breeder at just 30 km from us we visited him and looked at the litter that he had at the moment but decided to get one puppy from his next litter. He suggested a female cause he said they have a less dominant character and they are more incline to bond, something like that. Now she is with us home more then one year till now, she is almost indescribable, so good tempered so sweet. Her parents and her dad especially has very good temper, sweet and friendly. It is our first dog ever and we leave in a small town on the Adriatic sea, we don’t have a yard, just a terrace. The apartment is big but is still an apartment. We have jobs that allow us to be with her 24/7, except when she sleep, she is not allowed in our bedroom, and there are other restrictions, we learned that roles and consistency are very important, the moment we loosen the roles she will take advantage (in her case she will do so in a very sweet way 😁 but still). We take multiple walks, in nature and town, every day, and she plays with other dogs running around big areas in nature which she loves. Home she is peaceful and she happily greets everyone coming to visit, we really payed and still are paying a lot of attention into socialization, every kid or person that shows love towards dogs and wants to cuddle her she feels it and wants to greet everybody. We let her be cuddled by any stranger that wants to, we want her to be good and confident around strangers even cause our jobs are in tourism so she are already used to strangers coming and going. She started to guard the house, when we eat and she hears someone new walking the hallways outside she will make a sound (not necessary bark) to alert us, which she will not do if she is the one eating, she is not food aggressive at all, probably because the breeder instruct us to do some training to avoid it from the moment she came in our house, like mixing her food with our hands, putting food or taking it out of her plait while she is eating, pet her while she is eating, she never had any problems with that and now she is so used to it that when I do it she lean on my legs while she eats, we did it from when she was a puppy. We teach her tricks like people do with other dogs, we worked with her on the pulling from the moment she started to pull, cause we knew that that would become a problem when she reach 30 or 40 kgs, youtube can be a great source of info about dogs training, and we have the time to do it. And than of corse there are days that you can’t go out for long walks cause is raining and maybe there is guests coming or renovation jobs where we need to be present to supervise but she is very good at this, she is patient and will not destroy home because one or 2 days in a row she didn’t get quite enough exercise, some times we really think she understands that she will get what she need when it will be possible. I can see why this breed is not recommended for first time owners, cause I think the majority don’t have the time or are not aware of the amount and importance of the work you have to do in order to educate the dog. Were we ready? In theory yes 😁 but not really in “the know” but at the same time we didn’t get her for superficial reasons so we were ready to really try to do our best and now we don’t have words to describe how much she gives back. Maybe one of the best advise I heard so far about dog education is : “Don’t allow a puppy to do what is not acceptable for an adult dog to do”. And I will say, if your dog is a small size dog :” don’t allow a small size dog to act like you wouldn’t allow a big strong dog to act”. Small dogs lounging at my girl (they are leashed but still) and my girl looks at them as to say “is he crazy?”, and she don’t react at them as others would. But the owners react like nothing, like that is acceptable. What would they say if a big dog would do that? Ignorant people. Best regards from Jugoslavenka

They are good guard dogs, when we go visit the breeder his dogs are very quick to alert him of people coming and as a breed they are a high drive high energy breed, they will smell any animal approaching. They are a breed “made” mostly for hunting, wild (pigs) hogs and pumas but they usually hunt in pair or in group, not alone, but they are fearless so is very important for the owner to be responsible and not put the dog in an unfair situation. And ALL their natural talents has to be put into a structure of training, meaning yes they are hunters by nature but to be safe and become good hunters they need to be properly prepared. They are dogs that really appreciate human companionship but are very independent too. Are they aggressive? They are as many other breeds what you make of them, they reflect the owner and the amount and quality of “work” the owner invest in them. We think that the most important for a dog and especially for a powerful dog as this one is to make him a balanced dog for everyone safety. Socialization is a big thing, meaning the more things the dog get introduced to and used to (different people, kids, bikes, scooters, cars, skateboards etc.) more confident he she becomes. If the dog don’t know many things and situations he will be unsure and even fearful and that’s the base of misplaced aggression. Yes they can be good guard dogs and protection dogs. If you decide to get a dogo maybe near you you have good instructors that could help you teach your dog the way you want him to use his natural talents. :) Best regards :)

I have a 3-year-old male Dogo and he is one of the best dogs I've ever owned. He is huge and weighs in at 130 plus pounds but he is still very quick and agile. I am a retired K-9 instructor and I had Dobermans when doing that then I went to Pitbulls after I no longer needed a highly trained high-drive working dog. My Dogo is very calm and easygoing. He has very good social skills and gets along well with other dogs as long as they don't try to dominate him. He absolutely loves kids of any age or size. I am retired so he is very spoiled and does not like for me to leave him. I recently had a medical issue that required several days of hospitalization and it was out of town so my wife was not home either. I had my wonderful lady from Rover let him out three times a day and he never went on the floor and didn't chew or damage anything being left alone in the house 24 hours a day. I would highly recommend the breed for people who are prepared for handling a large powerful assertive dog. If you don't have the physical or mental strength required you would probably be better of with a dog that's not as powerful and with a little less prey drive.

That’s a beautiful story. Me and my mother are very active, so I would hopefully be able to convince my parents to get me a Dogo or a Presa so me and my mom could run with it. Are Dogo Argentino good with small dogs? I have a 6 year old Yorkshire terrier (7 pounds) and in order for them to get along, do I need a female, or would a male be ok?

@@dagodlypug2399 Dogo's are great running partners for sure. As far as getting along with your small dog if you start with a young puppy more than likely they will get along. We had a cat and a 10 year old female Pitbull when we got our male Dogo and he was 4 months old. We left them alone together after a while and never had a problem. This is normally the case but every dog is an individual so there is a small chance they may not get along. You can increase the odds of a good outcome by getting a Dogo the opposite sex of your current dog. If you decide to get a Dogo you should make sure you go with a good breeder. This will greatly increase the chances of getting a dog with a good temperament. You also need to be sure his hearing has been certified. White dogs like Dogo's have a genetic predisposition for deafness in one or both ears. Once you get your puppy find a good trainer and I don't mean something like Petco. It's imparitive that you start socialization and training as soon as possible. Dogo's are like any large powerful protective dog. They need training, socialization and a firm consistent owner. If you do things right you will end up with a loyal, loving and fearless companion. Best of luck should you decide to go for it and I hope you do.

I am fairly confident that I have the skill set to make a Dogo a great dog, but I would want to get a trainer for both my dogs, to make them get along well. And I mean a top notch one. There is one called Tom Davis (his KZbin channel is Upstate Canine Academy, he is really good) or just someone who is very knowledgeable. For starters though, my parents don’t really like big dogs too much, how do I bring them around to be more informed upon the fact that big dogs are great. And last thing, should I feed the dogo a raw diet? Again, thank you so much for your help, and have a great day.

@@dagodlypug2399 Sounds like you have the proper outlook to be successful with a Dogo. They are not like some mythical dragon they are just dogs. I think the best way to open your parents mind would be to find someone who has a well behaved Dogo or similar breed and let them interact. Everyone who has ever been around Dexter (my guy) falls in love with him. My dog sitter argues with her daughter over who gets to spend time with him. When I was hospitalized she brought her 8 or 9 year old son with her and Dexter had a blast. I'm personally not a fan of raw diets for dogs. They are dogs not wolves and have different needs. I feed mine a premium dog food with 3/4 pound of raw ground beef mixed in with a little hot water. He loves it and has done extremely well. He is huge. I haven't weighed him since he was 1 year old and then he was 124 pounds. I would guess he is between 135 and 140 now at 3 years so I must have done something right.

@@bigjimmy6690 thanks man, my mom saw a Newfie, and I went to pet it, she saw how friendly the dog was with me, but I will bring her around a well behaved one. My dad has been around big dogs like Saint Bernards and German shepherds, and says he isn’t very comfortable around them, but I should probably just have my parents interact with a dog like that. I had a female Dogo, very intelligent, very alert, very good with family... she loved to be pampered, not for a first time owner though... bit headstrong and willful. Only drawback I can think of, she had no regard whatsoever for her own well-being, she was constantly hurting herself, jump into thornbush...thorn in the eye. Run through barb wire fence huge gash down to the muscle... standing there with a big flap of skin hanging off her like she didn't feel it at all. All in all she had about 12k in vet bills, but I still wouldn't have traded her for the world.

He is not ‘loving’ in any sense, but the dog heavily depends on you because he is heavily impaired, and then is dependent on you. So he sees you as a member of the pack above him because all things you do he can’t. That is why he is calm, but otherwise, he would challenge you and your leadership.

I'm wondering if our puppy that we adopted from our local animal shelter is a dogo/pit mix. He's mostly white with a few tiny black spots on his ears and thin black coloring surrounding his eyes, nose, and lips. He's much taller than our boxer/pitbull mix female. He has a longer tail than her. He's very energetic and driven. He goes after our cats persistently, although he hasn't bitten them. He looks like a tall, skinny white pit. But his personality and his looks seem to line up with the Dogo Argentino too. I'm just learning about this breed. I've never heard of them before.

Currently have an All black eastern working line GSD, The Dogo will definitely be my second breed tho i intended it to be my first, i didn’t know if i was ready so i hesitated to get it cause i didn’t know if it was too much since it would’ve been my first dog and i had no experience but now i know i am after 1 year with my working line GSD which probably turned out to be even more work than what the Dogo Argentino would’ve been, but besides that, the Dogo truly is magnificent to look at, im taking every piece of advice i can get, please enlighten me if there’s anything i need to know about this breed that i’m not getting in these videos, been doing research for 1 year now, but i still feel like i’m missing something.

Can anyone please explain their experiences? I currently have a 90lb. female American Bulldog, who’s up there in age, and not in the best of health. The Bulldog was fixed and never gave me any problems, temperament wise or other. Wondering should I bring in a male Dogo into the family someone is giving away? He is around 6 months old I believe, and I don’t know much about him, other than the person giving him away had two, a boy and a girl, and they’re giving the boy away now due to lack of time to spend with him. My occupation has me working various hours at different times, so I am away for hours at a time, but I can be active with the dog when available (big fenced in yard, walks etc;).

@@SpiritMover314 I'd say meet the dogo first and talk to the owner who is rehoming the dog see if their are the start of any temperament issues. Dogo's tend to be more challenging then other dogs. I currently have a 7 year old male dogo they are excellent dogs but are head strong and will challenge for dominance.

@@SpiritMover314 Yes I had him fixed at 9 months old there are two very distinct types of dogo One is far more protective and challenging more true to what the dog was breed for and then there is the one that is more for show. I love this breed but it is crap shoot on what type of dogo you get.

They had a trainer, I'm not sure what the trainer told them when they went to put him down. He was a good boy, I really wish they would have found a more suitable home that has the time for him like yours instead of just putting him down :(

Can anyone please explain their experiences? I currently have a 90lb. female American Bulldog, who’s up there in age, and not in the best of health. The Bulldog was fixed and never gave me any problems, temperament wise or other. Wondering should I bring in a male Dogo into the family someone is giving away? He is around 6 months old I believe, and I don’t know much about him, other than the person giving him away had two, a boy and a girl, and they’re giving the boy away now due to lack of time to spend with him. My occupation has me working various hours at different times, so I am away for hours at a time, but I can be active with the dog when available (big fenced in yard, walks etc;).

In your specific situation it would be a terrible idea to get a Dogo for multiple reasons. Various hours at different times for you job, you need to be reliable and with your Dogo all the time or if you live with someone else they need to be with him/her while you are not.. if you go to the grocery store and leave them home that is one thing but hours and hours away with her by herself whether there is another dog or a large yard is bad for a Dogo. If you are not constantly there to introduce your Dogo to the bulldog the Dogo will most likely try and dominate over the bulldog because the proper attention into introducing each other has not been given. This is a hunting and protection dog not a backyard pooch, they are happiest doing exactly what they were bred for by the brilliant breeder that made them, and that is hunting wild boar, yes you can supplement their energy and exercise in other ways if you aren’t living somewhere that that has wild hog hunting, however this is the energy level and loyalty they were bred for and you wouldn’t be able to supplement half based on what you said. This isn’t a “when you are available “ dog it’s a commitment

Dog is require a lot of attention, if time isn’t there then don’t get him. He is 6 months, so probably big now. If they didn’t have enough time with him, then he probably hasn’t had enough socialization. You would need to learn or higher a trainer to get him used to people and other dogs.

If you get one as a puppy they will socialize with the pack. Do not get one that's 6 months to a year old because she or he will dominate the pack. Just a word of caution.

Is this breed good for hill areas? 4 months are quite cold. And I have many neighbours and friends who visit my house and new people also . So do you recommend this breed to me? Dear Stay Fit S, as the Dogos do not have undercoats, very cold weather can be problematic for them. They are not suitable to keep them freely in cold like a LGD, you either let them come in to you house, or you build a thermally insulated dog house for them.

yes they can be. They would be suitable for such. You will see many pics of them in russia nad argentina mountains where there is snow for many months out of the year. Also mine lives 1/2 indoor and half out. As long as he has a place out of the wind and rain with some bedding he will be ok. They are great guardians and have natural loyalty to family and children. You will ahve to introduce strangers to them as theya re young so they understand not all are bad. They naturally will protect family and property. check out mine on my channel if you'd like

Dogo has to be monitored constantly. Leaving it alone is too risky if you have neighbors or friends visiting you or getting close to your property. Almost without doubt I can tell you that eventually one day the dogo will attack them and cause severe injuries if not something worse. These dogs have to be under your supervision 24/7.

Don't listen to the other comments except the one of the channel owner, as long as you train and socialize them correctly they are amazing dogs and there will be no problem on having friends over! I don't think they're good to have in very cold areas unless you have them inside, they can go outside to play etc but is best if they sleep inside on cold months, they have very short hair

Those dogs were running loose and inact. They had a history of being a problem. I have one. He is amazing and NEVER not supervised when in our yard. He is neutered and not interested in leaving our acre and a half. He is not unpredictable nor inherently dangerous.
