I think you need to work on changing your perspective during a battle. Your flying capabilities came from being a rocket. As such, your orientation doesn't matter. Why then would you keep yourself horizontal after you lost a "wing"? You could have flown in a vertical orientation to keep the "wing" balanced and it would not have made a difference in your ability to fly. On a side note, having a gun in you plane with no controls would have given you an aiming reticle and made it easier to hit Scrapman
