Curiously, unlike other breeds, the origin of this dog is unknown. However, it’s known that the Bergamo Shepherd is one of the oldest Italian breeds. It’s believed that this dog descends from the great Molossians and from Hungarian dogs. It’s originated from the Italian Alps and has been used as a sheepdog for years. Due to their particular appearance, the shepherds mixed them among the sheep to confuse the predators and be able to attack when we were close enough. Unfortunately, the World War II, changed radically the fate of the breed forcing it to be in danger of extinction. Fortunately, thanks to Maria Andreoli, an Italian geneticist, the Bergamasco survived, was exported to other countries and has become one of the most famous dogs in the world.
Time for some Ruff Trivia:
What physical characteristic highlights the Bergamasco among the other races?
A: The Size
B: The coat
C: The color
The Bergamasco is a robust and well-proportioned dog that measures between 23 to 25 inches tall and weighs between 70 and 84 pounds. It has a wide head and large eyes. His ears are triangular, thin and covered by wavy, soft hair. The tail is thick, robust at the root and thinner towards the end. However, what stands out in the appearance of this dog is its fur. He’s one of the most characteristic Rastafarian dogs, although many confuse him with the Komondor, his dreadlocks hair is something natural that is born and grows like this when is brushing. Its texture is rough, and it has colors like the gray tones, with spots of this same color, light reddish and black. This color serves as a camouflage when he works in the mountains.
Grooming: Bergamasco hair doesn’t need a particular care, the dreadlocks are formed naturally after a year and a half of his life. However, despite his appearance doesn’t mean that he should be washed regularly unless necessary and should not be combed. The rest of the care is very basic. As with any other dog, you should brush his teeth daily, regularly trim his nails and clean his ears frequently. Learn how to find the perfect dog groomer here in BrooklynsCorner.com.
Temperament: Calm, patient, intelligent and attentive, the Bergamasco, even if he’s always alert to any situation, is a very affectionate and tolerant dog. They tend to be independent and very protective pets, capable of forming very close bonds with their human family.
Training: The Bergamasco ever needed to depend on its owner for any instruction, and its independence manifests itself as extreme stubbornness in training. However, with an adequate, patient, positive, tolerant and above all constant education, favorable results can be achieved.
Health: Surprisingly, the Bergamasco is a resistant dog, with no hereditary diseases common in the breed. This may be due, at least in part, to the low number of Bergamascos found throughout the world. However, like any other dog, this breed can develop any canine disease, so you have to provide basic health care and take him regularly to the veterinarian.
