Dogs 101 - NORWEGIAN ELKHOUND - Top Dog Facts About the NORWEGIAN ELKHOUND
The Norwegian Elkhound is a Northern Spitz-type breed that, as the name suggests, is native to Norway and primarily used as a hunting dog. Despite being from the Spitz family, it has been traditionally known as a ‘hound’ because of its exemplary hunting abilities. There is evidence of these dogs having been used as early as the time of the Vikings to trail large animals like the moose, keep these animals at bay while dodging the antlers and bark loudly to attract the hunter. Apart from being a hunting companion, the Norwegian Elkhound has also functioned as a herder, a guard dog and a defender from wild animals in the subzero climate and rugged terrain of Scandinavia. Although popular in Norway for centuries, it was only in the late 1800s that a proper breed standard was drawn up, and the dog was first displayed in a show in 1877. It soon made its entry into USA, where it has maintained reasonable popularity as a pet and a show dog. In Scandinavia, on the other hand, it is still tested by grueling elk hunts that could involve an entire day’s hunting.
Time for some Ruff Trivia:
- Weejie was a Norwegian Elkhound in the White House gifted by the Norwegian people to which US President as a sign of gratitude for his help during World War I?
o A: Theodore Roosevelt
o B: Herbert Hoover
o C: Dwight D. Eisenhower
What do you think, give it your best guess in the comments below before we get to the answer! Hang on tight and we’ll get back to this Ruff Trivia Question toward the end of the video.
The adult male Norwegian Elkhound has a height around 20.5 inches and weight around 55 pounds. The female stands to a height of about 19.5 inches and weighs roughly 48 pounds. It is a medium-sized dog, with square proportions. Typical Spitz-type features include a broad head that tapers like a wedge towards the nose; prick ears; and tightly curled tail carried over the back. The double-layered coat has a soft, dense, woolly undercoatand coarse, straight topcoat. The color is always a mix of black, white and grey.
Grooming:The Norwegian Elkhound is a moderate shedder normally requiring a brush two to three times a week. In shedding season, the frequency needs to increase depending on the individual dog. The coat should never be trimmed artificially. Brushing of teeth, trimming of nails and cleaning of ears has to be regular.
Temperament:Like many breeds of a similar history and functionality, the Elkhound is a bold, playful, alert and protective dog. It is a very social animal and needs to be around its family. It gets along very well with children, joining them in all their games and protecting them.Its suspicion towards strangers and confidence in meeting any challenge head-on make it a good watchdog. Unless socialized early on, it might have a tendency to get in a fight with other dogs or chase other pets. The Elkhound tends to bark a lot.
Training:The Elkhound is an intelligent dog that responds well to consistent and persistent training. Given the independent and bold streak in most of these dogs, it is important to establish yourself as the leader of the pack early on. Bred for its stamina, the Elkhound needs a substantial workout to not get frustrated. This could include a long walk on leash along with an exhausting game in the yard.
Health:Life expectancy for the Norwegian Elkhound is 12 to 14 years, but some dogs have been reported to live up to 18 years and older. It is a generally hardy breed, but some health issues that can arise include progressive retinal atrophy, hip dysplasia, cysts, and some thyroid and renal problems. The breed is prone to obesity.
The Norwegian Elkhound is a bold and energetic animal, used to hunting animals much larger in size. Add friendliness, dependability and a protective nature to the mix and it’s easy to see why the Norwegians have loved it for millennia.
Find out if the Norwegian Elkhoundwould be a good addition to your home. Now you can visit Brooklyn’s Corner.com to take our quiz and find out which dog would be the best match for you.

My Norwegian Elkhound cross passed away at 18 years old... it was pry my most difficult loss, and I've lost plenty of people. I now have a 6mo old purebred Norwegian Elkhound. These dogs are the best, and I don't understand how they are so little known.

1:58 "Moderate shedder?" They shed like a tool house and often bark like an oak tree. Seriously, I take my adult Elkhound to the home center, the bank, the hardware store, even the pharmacy. He is well-behaved, and draws may admiring comments and lots of attention, "Is your dog friendly? Can I pet him?" A little boy saw him from another aisle in the garden center and said, "Wolf!" I took the dog to that aisle, and the boy's parents recognized the breed. The comment heard from everyone who recognizes the Elkhound is that they had some close connection to one through the years, always followed by a comment that it was the best dog they ever had. An elderly lady who had come to the US from Norway as a little girl sat with my dog's head in her lap, speaking to him in Norwegian. The Elkhound is the best-kept secret of all the family dog breeds; properly socialized, they get along well with toddlers to doddlers, and all ages in between.

My Norwegian Elk Hound Mojo is so smart. Last week I was upstairs taking a shower. As I got out of the shower, I heard a loud thud. I came down stairs and Mojo was no where around. I looked all over the house and finally found him in the laundry room sitting in the corner crying. I had found an empty coffee cup on the floor. I explained to him that he wasn't in trouble. It took me about 5 minutes to convince him. He is the sweetest boy. Right now he is sleeping next to me, using my knee as a pillow. He will be 3 in February and is the best dog I have ever owned. And at the age of 70, I've owned a lot of dogs. He never leaves my side.

@5610winston
@5610winston 5 жыл бұрын
I'm no expert or matchmaker; a lot depends on your family and domestic situation, but if you got along well with Akitas, an Elkhound might be worth consideration. About half the people I meet ask if mine is an Akita or an Akita mix. I've never spent much time around Akitas, but my understanding is that they are generally aloof and protective, but sensible around strangers. My Elkhounds (I've had four through the years) have been friendly and intuitive in their interactions with people. All my friends remark that my dog is an ideal size (about knee-high at the shoulder and 50 pounds) and very well-behaved. Elkhounds do best spending as much time as possible with their pack, both human and canine, making them an excellent family dog. Find a good breeder, spend some quality time discussing what you are looking for in a dog. Also, talk to some of the breed rescue organizations. Good luck to you and your potential canine pal!

My three-year-old weighed 49 pounds at his last vet visit last month; he is fairly big-boned , and still filling out. The vet says his weight is just right for his size, as does the breeder. Watch your dog's weight and adjust his diet and exercise levels as needed to keep him at a healthy weight. Once they become obese, it is very difficult to get the weight off. Good luck, and take that dog for a jog! And scratch him under the chin for me!

He was 66 pounds when i got him with not a bit of fat on him, she said he was by far the biggest Elkhound she had ever seen in 30 years of breeding and showing them. He head was huge compared to ma wee lassies. Best looking dog i have ever seen, almost royal looking. Ended up around 70 pounds mate

They hunt moose and herd reindeer. The four I have had have never seen a moose or a reindeer, and are protective, but not aggressive. Very sweet. I keep my dog on leash except when he's in a fenced yard or indoors. They tend to be runners when they get out. How much exercise? As much as you can give him. Yes they can be trained to go off leash but keep them far away from traffic, the dogs have a stubborn streak to them especially when their prey drive kicks in. 3. My Norwegian Elkhound, Lola, loved to hunt and kill pretty much everything. Over her lifespan, she killed 2 groundhogs, at least 6 birds I know of, 4 skunks (got skunked all 4 times), 2 squirrels, 3 rabbits and countless mice. She was like a complete sociopath, lol. She'd stalk her prey, and pounce at the right moment, maul and dismember the target, play with it's corpse in a morbid display of victory and come back inside and sleep like nothing happened. In sharp contrast to Lola was my Pembroke Corgi, Pebbles, who I remember watching laying down on the patio, enjoying the sun and a gentle breeze when a bird landed ON HER HEAD. She just laid there with this bird nested between her ears, no shits given, until Lola came and crushed it between her jaws. Anyway, she was a great dog, and very intelligent. But she was extremely independent and didn't enjoy too much contact with humans. Again, this was in sharp contrast to the Corgi that needed constant petting and cuddling. From what I've read, this is typical of Norwegian Elkhounds. Also, don't get one if you have neighbors that have free-roaming cats and rabbits. That makes for a very awkward conversation. "Have you seen Peter around? He's gone missing." "Was he white with a black streak between his ears?" "Yes." "Nope. I've never seen a rabbit in my life."

Proper name would be Grey moose dog, to keep it apart from the black moose dog.

@@deliuta8143 Yes! But the shedding is worth it. They are absolutely wonderful family dogs. Eager to please, full of character and love to camp. I'll send a link that shows shedding. The furminator is the brush for these guys.

@@deliuta8143 about the ears back... That's a trait of the elkhound while being brushed or pet. In dog shows, when a judge reaches out and the ears go back, they don't get docked because it isn't an aggressive show. And they aren't to be trimmed for show, either. We never showed ours. They were just part of the family and we're always in the middle of what we did. Camping is always a favorite. When we'd go to the snow, Ulrich would tunnel in the snow and pop up several yards away, almost always with a deer bone. We decided that's why he tunneled to begin with. He'd smell a bone and go after it. He was a hoot!

The main problem I find with this breed, indeed. I just did the IAMS dog breed selector, selected a dog with minimal barking, and gave me a 0% score on that... :D

I had to move to an apartment for a few months while my house was being repaired. When we moved back home, the upstairs neighbors looked at Grey and remarked that they didn't know we had a dog. That was twenty-three years and two dogs ago. Baldurdash is generally quiet, except when he wants me to let him in. We couldn't figure why Moose barked at 03:48 in the morning until I had to go in to work that early and saw a train crossing a trestle a mile from the house. The next time she barked I told her I knew about the train and she never alerted to it again. Likewise the Santa Claus figure on the next-door neighbor's roof.
