Too bad when Gene and Roger got into the bigger syndication package and had to cover only big releases they got rid of these fast and funny segments. These early public TV days of Siskel and Ebert were the best.
@75aces97
@75aces97 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, they moved onto their own syndicated show, they had more commercial time, so talked longer about only a few movies every week. Good news was, Sneak Previews did continue without them. The bad news was, they were replaced by Jeffrey Lyons and Michael Medved.

They did try to continue with Stinker of The Week while at Tribune, but it basically became inconsistent two years after, so they dropped it all together.

@@daniverse9625 They had a skunk named Aroma who was on stage during those segments, but it wasn't the same as the glory days of Sparky, Zeke, and especially that awesome Spot. Aroma's best moment came when Gene fed him some walnuts and pecans before announcing the SOTW.

"Dead and Buried" was actually a pretty fun movie, and it had Robert Englund in a pre-Freddy Kruger role. "Screamers" had a great video box, never saw the actual movie though. "Bare Knuckles" often aired on cable stations at late night, the funky music was fun to listen too, pretty much the only good thing about that movie. "It Came Without Warning" was a hilariously bad movie with one of the oddest castings ever, Jack Palance and Martin Landau. Did you know the guy in the alien costume would later play the title monster in "Predator"? "Maniac" is not a pleasant movie to watch, but it has this sleazy appeal, the ultimate grindhouse movie. "Beyond Evil" actually looks like a "so bad its good" movie. "Dirt", is this like the original "Jackass"? ""Demonoid" was pretty hilarious. "Blood Beach", that was pretty silly too. "Superpower"-Does sound like fun if you like bad dubbing and alleged kung-fu. "Terror House"-Sounds like typical grindhouse fare. "Firecracker"-That was a guilty pleasure when I watched it on cable from time to time. The leading lady did look hot. It was actually a loose remake of "TNT Jackson", and the same director will use the same plot a third time for the 90's action pic "Angel Fist".

Strange, the thing I hated most about "Maniac" were the long, heavily padded sequences where absolutely nothing happens. I think the movie would have made a better short film with what little it had to work with, especially since they didn't even bother to hide who the killer was.

Bizarrely enough, when I saw "Maniac" for the first time on VHS as a teenage gorehound, that very scene that caused Siskel to walk caused me to stop the tape and go outside. I did get around to watching the rest, though. The best thing about the movie for me isn't so much Spinell or Savini as Jay Chattaway's excellent score.
