I love each and everyone of these babies. They are so precious! But what happens to the ones that are not adoptable?
@DogPlaygroupStories10 ай бұрын
Some get fostered for a long time. Most eventually get adopted (and the volunteers and staff all celebrate) or else go out to a rescue and live there. We don't euthanize dogs just because they've been in the shelter for a long time, but if there's severe overcrowding (over about 450 dogs), then the shelter will place some of the dogs on a list for being euthanized based on a defined set of criteria. Most of those get adopted or rescued. The staff and volunteers care very much for every dog.

The key thing is whether each dog respects the corrections of the other. If a dog wants the other dog to back off, the other dog should stop and back away. That often doesn't happen and the dog wanting space will usually try to escape to somewhere else or escalate the corrections with snarls, frightening barks, etc. It's mainly about consent. These videos do contain some interactions that are not good in order for viewers to see what happens. I think it's good for dogs at home to see the whole range of what can happen. Although I don't show actual fights, I do include sequences of dogs not respecting other dogs' corrections (and you see the handler step in when that happens).

This was back where there was a terrible outbreak of disease at the shelter. If the dogs were more stressed out the disease would spread. Playgroups are great at reducing stress. However the disease could easily spread through common water in the play yard. The lead veterinarian at the shelter checked with other shelters including one that had world class experts in shelter diseases. So she made the decision to continue to have playgroups but there was no way to have water in the playgroups. So we only allowed the dogs in the yard for a limited time (at least that was the plan) and watch them for signs of dehydration and get them back to their kennel if there were any. In theory no individual dogs were in the yard more than 10 or 20 minutes. We had the playgroups in the early mornings, so it wasn't as hot as it could have been. The plan worked well since we avoided any massive outbreaks of the disease and I don't think any dogs had any serious dehydration issues.

Awww, who's the sad pupper behind the gate at 9:57-10:00?
@DogPlaygroupStories Жыл бұрын
That's Rambo. He had to go into the side yard for some reason, possibly a potential conflict with another playgroup dog. There's some discussion about it in the video but I can't hear what the reason was. I added whatever I could to the subtitles. [UPDATE Dec 20, 2022]: Rambo was in the yard a few days earlier when a bad altercation happened. Rambo did nothing wrong but was very frightened by it. The Dogs Playing for Life team recommends "CPR": Continue, Play, Recover. Right now Rambo is just staying in the side yard until he feels comfortable joining back in the playgroup. He might jump up on the fence and get excited, but he's still frightened to actually go back in right now. Hopefully he returns to the main yard soon. petharbor.com/pet.asp?uaid=PIMA.A757528

I'd say most of the dogs in the playgroup are pit bulls (or pit bull mixes) and they do just fine. Pit bulls are wonderful dogs and the bad reputation is probably due to some owners that don't treat them well.

So I don’t get it why dose the Pitbull got a muzzle on but no other dogs do
@DogPlaygroupStories Жыл бұрын
If the playgroup handler thinks there's a chance the dog might start, or jump into an altercation with another dog then they might still bring in the dog but using a muzzle to be safe. Sometimes they'll remove the muzzle if they're confident the dog will behave. It's all about each particular dog, or sometimes certain combinations of dogs. I seem to recall that the handler in Episode 61 left the muzzle on Kora because he was introducing a dog later on that might be a problem for Kora.

I couldn’t hear- why was Rambo isolated in a yard by himself? We are considering fostering him. I’ve followed him for a long time and consulted an adoption counselor about him. I know he has some issues. I think he’s kind of misunderstood. Can you tell me anything about him from your observations? He was also in episode 55…..

I'll ask the Behavior Team today since I'll be running playgroup dogs.
@DogPlaygroupStories Жыл бұрын
I talked to a Behavior Team member about Rambo and here's what happened: Rambo was in the yard during a bad altercation and was very frightened by it. DPfL recommends what they call "CPR": Continue, Play, Recover. Dogs that do nothing wrong in an altercation should be allowed to continue in the playgroups in whatever way they feel comfortable with. The Behavior Team is allowing Rambo to sit in the side yard for now until he feels safe playing in the main yard. I updated the subtitles to include this.

@@DogPlaygroupStories thank you so much! You’ve been a HUGE help. I don’t see him as a violent dog. The adoption counselor said he has a ‘dog bite history’, and we were worried about our two gentle dogs. Any dog will bite if he feels cornered, threatened, or scared. So I’d have to know the circumstances of the alleged bite. I don’t feel like Rambo would initiate a fight. They also said he’s not housebroken. We have an XL dog door. I think with constant access to the outside, we could work with him. He was at PACC for over a year, adopted for about a month, and returned in October. He deserves better. Thanks so much for your help. We’ll wait for this strep zoo epidemic to pass!
@DogPlaygroupStories Жыл бұрын
Yeah, the strep zoo issue is a big pain. Last I heard it was limited to a different building from Rambo's kennel. The staff are doing everything possible to stop it from spreading. It's easily transmitted but also easily treated. Dog introductions with outside dogs are on hold until Thursday. The latest note on Rambo is from 5 days ago and it sounds like he doesn't like really noisy, chaotic, potentially threatening situations. Exiting the kennel is usually very noisy/chaotic/threatening with all the dogs barking like crazy. Rambo likes to explore areas and "would make a great companion for someone active who wants to take their dog on lots of adventures." Apparently he doesn't like to be picked up or force handled, especially if he doesn't know the person.
