True,but im sure when they develop more in design and become more common,dogs will accept them like we accepted each other. I love animals but I can't stand it when they pass away,it breaks my heart.ill always have a real dog but a robot dog will never die and will always be there for emotional support. I wonder if they'll make them look more realistic in the future and add generic dog scent to them to help the real dogs get used to it.i want my best friend to love my friend just as much.

One thing's for sure, they know it has no dog scent and probably that it smells like their owner's TV or computer. It takes electronics getting really hot for us to smell it, but dogs can probably smell it all the time.

I think Aibo is great for people living in urban areas, majorly apartments. Many upscale Complexes have strict no pets policy. Or the families who want a pet but have no time to take care of the real one.

I don't think this is an attempt to replace dogs. Personally, I prefer a real dog and I know a lot of people feel that way. I see this as something for people who can't have pets, be it the elderly in care homes or children who live in places that don't allow real animals. It gives these people a sense of companionship. I can see good elderly homes getting these for residents of people buying them for their elder family members as a friend because they are unable to care for a real one.

Crazy King Of Spades I also think this is nice for people who are allergic to animals, as I know many of my friends who have dog allergies want to try out this dog-like robot. Of course I would always choose a living thing over a robot, but growing up in a household that didn't allow pets I would've loved this as a child.

All the Aibo really needs is some robotic scent glands that smell like a dog they aren't familiar with, then they will probably be more comfortable around it and might treat it more like a dog, for now they seem to see it as some kind of electronic pet, kind of like the TV or computer, but it's some kind of electrical pet.

Actually Chihuahuas can be vicious little dogs, they make up for their small size with spunk and ferociousness, let's just hope the burglar isn't wearing boots. On the other hand if an Aibo was upgraded, it could call the police, and take pictures of the burglar as evidence for the police. Hmmm

They just won't care. It will be more familliar but thats it. They are aware its not a real alive dog hence irrelevant. To them it looks more like a toy and not natural..

@@ChrisD__ not really. Dogs are very dependent on body language and energy. They can feel the dog is not alive but are interested/surprised because they understand its a toy and to them unpredictable because there is nothing there to understand. You should really look into dog psychology & brain. Animals are much more intelligent than most humans percieve them to be, its just different types of intelligence. They are not that dense lmao, the first moment the dog living with a robot dog will meet a real dog is over for the machine:D evolution doesn't vanish in a year of conditioning an animal, might blurr the lines, but you'll never replace the inner compas within.

I think the one thing they're forgetting is that the dogs all sniff Aibo and since it doesn't have any scent the dogs don't see it as a animal. Now if Aibo could be made to have scents all the time or when approached then I think the dogs would think it's a dog and treat it as such.

Some good things to add to the next Aibo versions would be a tongue with a tube in it so that Aibo could drink water and lick your face, the ability to store and pee the water it drank after a certain amount of time slightly randomized, robotic scent glands with a purified dog scented fluid to make it more comfortable to real dogs. An air molecular analyzer in the snout so that it can smell other dogs and things and learn smells. And a servo noise cancelation system to quiet the servos.

Dogs primary interaction with the World is through smell. If something doesn't have a nature smell, they will not really be fooled no mater how realistic it appears, it will be nothing more to them than a chew toy or something to avoid.

The robot doesn't interact with them, so why would the dogs care about it? It would just be another of those strange human things, like the big boxes that carry people places, or the odd boxes in the living room that make pictures and sounds. Until the Aibo can recognise the dogs and actually show interest itself, there's no reason the dogs would care after they've become used to it's existence.

a goat Yeah, but those $3k will be the only ones you would pay, alongside a bit for electricity to recharge Aibo. For a dog, you have to take in consideration the food and vet visits, as well as any other need that your dog may require. For a lifetime of a dog, you would need to spend around $43k, if not more. Not exactly something that people on a very tight budget can afford.

Imagine a dog getting sick a few times, food cost, toys, etc etc. all 3 cost me food, litter, toys, vet bills, etc etc. I’m way over the $3000 mark lol. And I have 4 of them aibos from Japan used condition that cost me under $3000 with no issue functional wise. And the fact people continue to compare aibos to dogs. Aibos are based off dogs yes but they are robots made for entertainment and to many of us…. Part of the family as a robot friend, not a pet. So….. take this as you will I guess.

Depending on the type of dog you get...how many veterinarian trips you need...how much food you need...how many training classes you need...how many dog hotels you need (when you go on vacations).... cost wise, robot dog is less expensive then a real dog.

That's a super cool robot. But dogs need scents to communicate and recognize anything familiar in their surroundings. For example... ever see a dog reunite with its owner? Many don't recognize them UNTIL they smell them. This thing, to a dog, may have a familiar shape. But, the scent is plastic and makes mechanical sounds..... like a vacuum or anything similar.. I'm sure there will be many dogs may interact with it, but as a toy, not another dog. Most dogs may be skiddish or uninterested in it. Dog can be very intelligent, so they know when it's fake or real.

3k for that toy!? for 3k I'd expect the flexibility and self-balancing of Boston Dynamic's Spot. You'd not need any advanced programming for it, just training an ANN in a simulation and a gyroscope (every damn phone's got one).

I bought one of these aibo 20 years ago and it still does the same thing not much improvement except for the eyes. and the app. a little disappointed that 20 years later they could not do anything better than the eyes and the app. and $3,000 that price is outrageous. you might as well get yourself a real dog it really is less work. and a real dog will last longer. and it will learn the same commands as a robot dog. and do not forget a real dog will love you
