Dogtra vs DT Systems: Launcher Comparison

This video compares the Dogtra QL-2 electronic launcher with DT Systems BL-509 launcher. Electronic launchers (aka remote launchers) and good flying birds are a great way to convince bird dogs that birds can't be caught which encourages their natural pointing instincts to emerge.

I don't think the DT spring being too strong is a negative. For someone like me that going to use it to launch training dummies, you want a stronger spring. Looks like I'm going with the DT! Thanks for the review.

I bought a manual launcher, then added a $10 remote relay, a $10 12v car door lock actuator and a small 12v battery I had. Works great!

I bought one of those remote relays for another project but haven't tested its range yet. Do you know what the range of your unit is? It'll obviously vary somewhat based on terrain (flat versus hilly) and based on how you hold the transmitter (high over your head versus down by your side), but on average, what kind of range are you getting?

Great video! I didn't know I needed this. I've always felt my dt launcer is not just heavy, but it sends the pigeons sky high. So now I want a dogtra.

I just bought the DT 509 launcher. I like the fact that I can launch chukar , multiple quail, or pigeons. And the trap door is nice to use loading at my vehicle before planting them.

If money was no object, I see the advantage of having one of each: The DT unit for the reasons that you gave and the Dogtra for when you just want to take a single, smaller launcher and a bag of pigeons for a longer distance, simulated hunt.

Very informational Mark. Any idea when they the Dogtra launchers will be sent to distributors? Trying to get them from Gun Dog Supply, but they have NO clue as to when they will receive stock. Thanks

Dan, I have one contact at Dogtra (their Asst Marketing Manager) who told me "the QL2 launchers are available to them just LIMITED STOCK and the PL launchers may be out of stock to distributors for now." Sorry that I couldn't get a better answer. Hard to believe but global inventory chain problems are still a problem, what, two years later?! There are two Ford plants near me, and there are hundreds (probably thousands) of vehicles temporarily stored in the area that are completely finished EXCEPT for a computer chip that's still needed.

Do you know if the Dogtra receiver can be used with a DT launcher?

I don’t think so because the DT launcher is a combination receiver and servo motor in one. The DOGTRA is a receiver that sends a signal to the separate solenoid that actuates the unit.

Do you use real pigeons ? I’m not sure because this is my first hunting dog and first time seeing these launchers

Yes. I use both honing pigeons and rollers.
