Since this house only has 1 bathroom, it would be smart to fix downstairs and make it a proper basement. Add a bathroom down there and make the extra space a place for towels or other storage.

If this is a flip, you are better served converting this large space into two smaller bathrooms with efficient space design. You will definitely get more bang for your buck with a 3/2 vs a 3/1 no matter how big the 1 bathroom is.

the resale value won't be there making the 1 bathroom into two as opposed to upgrading the one bathroom...families with small children will buy a one bathroom home as they can bathe their children in the tub. nobody wants a home with just a shower. down the road they can add a half bath off the kitchen.

That wall is absolutely not load bearing since he's literally ripping it out in the video so you don't need to do a jack stud, king stud, and header to distribute any load. That method is completely fine on that type of wall.

Not sure if it’s already been mentioned, but a lot of time in older homes those laminate/linoleum floorings had asbestos in them so they would encapsulate it by just going right over the top with a new layer of particle board and linoleum. Just be careful when pulling it up not to fragment it too much and wear that respirator. Maybe consider using a hepa air scrubber while you pull it up-rent them from HD for pretty cheap and helps with clean up.

@@linnoff He tested some ceiling and flooring of the kitchen area that wasn't double tiled-over. Doesn't really apply to this separate section that had one or two additional layers of linoleum to possibly encapsulate asbestos. TBH he has some okay foundational knowledge for DIY but really seems like he's putting himself and his followers at risk. Some of it is minor nuisance-level/quality of life issues (not priming drywall behind brand new kitchen cabinets), but expanding 1 bathroom with possible asbestos raises some obvious and not-so-obvious concerns. To clarify, he should have put primer and a top coat over the drywall in the kitchen because the drywall will pick up any cooking smells without it. Not a big issue in a 3-5 year span, but overall will hurt the lifespan of the home and the only fix is to take down the cabinets he spent so many hours (and $) putting up. On the bathroom specifically, a pocket door from the master bed seems nice at the surface level, but weigh the options: big bath connected to the main living AND master bedroom, OR have a 2 smaller full baths with one connected to the master. If space doesn't permit that, even a 1/2 bath connected to the master and the full bath to the shared space would be better than having the master have to listen to farts through a cheap pocket door he's going to put in. And that's not even considering the asbestos issues from demoing that space.

Correct. Absolutely no need for a header on an interion not load bearing wall. The roof rafters carry all the weight. Also a single stud will work but you would usually want to mainly to help keep the single stud from twisting or warping.

As someone who has lived in a three bed, one bath house I worry about these plans. What happens if you have someone using the toilet and somebody saunters in from the bedroom? Also, having a separate toilet makes it easier if someone is using the bath/shower.

He should have made a stackable washer/dryer and then used the space gained with that to turn this into two bathrooms. People have told him over and over about all the asbestos tiles he keeps removing but he "had the house tested." They did not test all the materials that were buried under everything else. He should have a fan sucking all that dust out the window too.

You should turn it into 2 bathrooms. One accessed from the BR with a single sink, toilet and standup shower. Then small one off the hallway with a tub. It would be tight but doable and way better to have 2 bathrooms

Home improvement stores sell scraper attachments for reciprocating saws that helps to scrap laminate, etc. Also, you need some sort wrecker (long bar) type pry bar! That would make pulling up that MDF so much easier!

That early 1950's bathroom was obviously upgraded, looks like in the 80's from the style of tub and vanity. Also, the sink plumbing used to come out of the floor back in the day. My 1939 house still has it coming out of the floor and I'm going to have to find a way to put it into the wall like that one when I remodel.

I get yalls comments about adding a half bath, but he mentioned he added roughly 20 sq ft. When you add that wall back in, another door in the opposite space ect that 20 sq ft gets reduced. 3/1 arent uncommon. Yall that are complaining have all purchased a 3/1. He will have no issues selling or renting this home. IMO hes still making great content lets not get hung up on headers or 20sq ft. Lol😅

I think 2 doors to a washroom are a dumb idea. It is better to split that bathroom into a full and a half bath. Nobody wants to go into the bathroom at 2am and lock 2 doors, especially a pocket door - they are obnoxious to lock.

We had a pocket door for the main bathroom of the house. Absolutely hated it to the point where we ended up enclosing it and turning it into a closet for more storage. I would recommend reconsidering.

I’m currently remodeling a house that is full of that particle board subfloor. The best way I have found to remove it is to use a cats paw pry bar to drive under the nail heads and pull each nail. Then the board lifts right up easily

I guess you are used to newer construction where bathrooms are huge. That is actually quite a good sized space for an older single bathroom home, if you forgo a bathtub for a shower you could probably split it into two small bathrooms or a bath and half bath.

i would have made two smaller bathrooms. The closet area, could have been a small bathroom with a toilet, sink, keep the door to the hall. The original bathroom, have the sink at the wall dividing from the now small bathroom, and have a door to the bedroom for a master bathroom.

Make the extra closet space you opened up into a half bath, wall off that and then make the rest of the original bathroom a small but nice master bath. Call in a 1 1/2 bath is way more marketable than a 1 bath house and way better for 4+ people living in a house.

Sorry. Two doors is a bad idea. I would prefer to have this area divided into two small bathrooms. Especially as one could be accessed directly from the master bedroom. Storage space for towels is not a major issue because you could a small storage unit in the bathroom. I live in a three bedroom house with one bathroom and it is a nightmare. Size doesn't make any difference. It's the quantity in that case that would make a difference.

The header wasn't necessary in the wall because the wall was not a supporting wall. That is also why you were able to take it down without the house caving in on you. [IRC 602.7. 3] Nonbearing Walls. Load-bearing headers are not required in interior or exterior nonbearing walls

when you said you needed to make the bathroom more functional for multiple people, my awesomely-weird mind immediately thought you could fit a triple sink, or two toilets...and I've never heard of either of these. It's quite silly 😜 WHY DO WE NOT PUT MULTIPLE TOILETS IN RESIDENTIAL BATHROOMS? Is it a subtle nod to privacy issues? I mean, if I came across this in real life I'd find it ridiculous, but there must be some kind of use-case there. If you had just a little more space, better to have 2 baths. One with small shower for Master, and one with tub/shower for main. If you just do a shower, it cuts your buyers to adults. Kids need baths. My opinion.

You can have kid bath tubs and just put it in the shower fill it up and bath the baby/child, are they bigger they can shower with their parents or alone (if big enough), otherwise a bath is more of a luxary/have fun thing.

I don't think 2 FULL bathrooms are necessary. What I would do is add a water closet somewhere. Much easier and practical. Rarely do multiple people need to take a shower/bath at the same time in a house.

Wall wasn't moved, they moved the pluming. They used to send water (brown and potable) lines directly downwards but stopped that practice as it's not up to code anymore (from what I understand).

Having added all that space from the hall closets, I totally would have split it into a full bath from the hall and a 3/4 bath from the master. Would have been better to do 2 spearate baths there, especially given the space you added to it.

I've watched the whole series on the abandoned house, but I am confused as to the plans. When it first started you rebuilt the garage and called it your dream shop, but I get the impression you aren't going to live in the house when it's finished. Can you tell us the plans for yhe living portion of the property?

Bourbon Moth covered this in a recent interview collab he did and basically the DIY tubers (including him) are buying up homes or using their own homes as content opportunities. So the plan is to make a bunch of content, not necessarily to flip the house. So it could very well be that Alex just does all this work and then just uses the shop and forgets about the rest of the house once all the content has been made. Or uses it to stage furniture projects. TBH this whole series is like the anti DIY in terms of order of operations and fit and finish, especially compared to stuff done in his first house when the channel first started. I would not use anything from this series as a starting off point for renovation works unless your goal is to fuck up your house.

Been following most of this project. The format of the series requires serious viewer dedication. Each video seems to be just milk a small aspect. This video is an example of that. Way too long with zero payoff. Would have been better to have done the demo and remodel all in one video.

That door does not need a header unless it is bearing the roof load. If that was the case you couldn’t remove that wall. However, jack studs should still be there. Still poor framing from the original builders!

The door framed without a header is probably fine because it's not a load bearing wall. But the wall you knocked down for a pocket door - that's perpendicular to the non-load bearing wall, so it's in fact a load bearing wall. I'm not sure a pocket door inside a load bearing wall is a good idea. I'm just going by what I see in the video, so I can't be sure which wall is load bearing. But for sure one of those walls is load bearing, and you knocked both down. You need to account for that or the roof will sag..

Cats paw/claw is a good small tool to remove nails... Surprised you don't have one. Not recommended to use particle board for tile... If your home has particleboard as an underlayment you're either living in a cheaply built home, or a mobile home. People, please don't use particle board in wet areas.

I think the pocket door is a bad idea!! I wouldnt want gueats to have acces to my room whenever they use the bathroom. Plus that is added noise when closing doors in the middle of the night. That alone is a pass for me.
