I just unpromoted all my listings, now I'm going back and turning them all back on to 2%. I find it best to make changes constantly. I change descriptions, pictures, promotions, etc. It seems to drive traffic to "look" at least. People with big stores don't have time to do this. They list it and forget it! I can barely get up 250 items, lol. Working on it every day though.

Great video and explanation of promoting. Ive found a lot of people get stuck on paying ebay a couple additional points on a sale rather than look8 g at the larger picture you clearly illustrated with how an extra $800 netted you over $40k in sales. Advanced is very good for items where you have multi-quantity. I've been promoting for the last 3 or 4 years and can attest to everything you laid out here. I'm at about $175k gross annually, with roughly 60% of my sales coming via ads.

ya well not near a typical sellers volume. Most sellers are not grinders willing to take silly low prices because they do not have the volume to make up the lower prices. eBay could careless apparently. It's a race to the bottom and they are going to crash in spectacular fashion.

Now ebay has a 30 day trigger..... if you promote an item and someone clicks on it but doesn't buy. Then you take the item OFF PROMOTEd listing .... the customer comes back a week later if it's within 30 DAYS. You will have to pay your promoted fee. This just happened to me. ........ here is the Ebay quote .........You’re only charged if a buyer clicks on your promoted listing or on the heart icon to add an item to their watchlist and then purchases any of your Promoted Listings Standard items within 30 days.

Promoting my listings has done absolutely nothing for my sales. I've tried 2%, I've tried 13%. It does not guarantee a higher rank in the listings. It does not guarantee more exposure. It only guarantees eBay will make even more money from you if your item sells. I'm a Top Rated seller, and an (almost) 25-year eBay veteran with a consistent 100% feedback. I'm glad promoted listings works for you, but it doesn't work for everybody - which just shows how inconsistent and screwed up eBay is now. There are plenty of other sellers - especially long-haulers - who have noticed the same thing.
@justinresells
@justinresells Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and sharing! You're right, promoted listings aren't necessarily a silver bullet and it's best to try it out and see if it works for your business specifically. My guess is that it has a lot to do with what you're selling. For example, if an item just doesn't have much demand, promoting it is not going to make it more in demand. Promotions work best when both demand and supply is high.
@kld70

I don’t consider myself knowledgeable on eBay, but it sounds like promoted listings may not be helping you boost sales because your good business practices were causing the algorithms to place your listings at the top anyways. It doesn’t sound like exposure is holding back your sales. Perhaps look to other metrics like selection, pricing and display to increase your revenue. And by all means, keep up the excellent customer service. As for eBay’s faults, remember you’re paying for access to the marketplace, a/k/a foot traffic so offer customer support suggestions but temper them with a realization of the intense operational needs of a huge platform. There’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes to make this marketplace a reality. It’s not easily maintained or recreated and deserves some slack. I, for one, appreciate that someone else has put in all the knowledge and work to create a place where I can buy and sell with strangers all over the world. I definitely wouldn’t have ever figured out how to do that on my own. Thanks for sharing. Be well and prosper. ❤

The best results I've gotten, is selling Antiques, and Collectibles. I've tried some clothing, and shoes, and did TERRIBLE. Promoted listings are driving many Sellers broke. If you are doing 20% Promoted on shirts, then you are paying Ebay around 35%. That's ALOT of money overall. I buy more unique or limited items. As such, the most I do is 5%. Might take awhile for a collector to buy my item, but I prefer that, than making $2 an item in Flooded Categories. My profit margin is very good on items. Profit margin should be what people need to concern themselves with, not how many sales they make.

One problem that I have come across is when looking at the active listings let’s say they say there are 200 of them and the sold listings are 100. It really doesn’t matter on the sold listings for what I’m talking about. Anyway, going back to the 200 that are active. Sometimes they’re not the exact thing that you typed in but yet they still counted as a number for the active listings so you can’t always get an accurate number. I hope that made sense.
@justinresells
@justinresells Жыл бұрын
Yes, that is a problem for sure! I find that I often have to get more granular with my search if the results are showing a wide mix of related items. For example, always search for the model number if the item has one. Also, filter by the condition -- new or used. That helps you get more specific results. Thanks for watching!

Doing the “quick and dirty” on Comps (i.e. NOT going granular as Justin rightly points out is even more important most of the time), when you’re under the gun at your sourcing location - is required due diligence… as in checking out an unfamiliar (usually vintage) brand, just to get a feel for if it’s a grand slam or an ass brand.

The main issue I have with ebay promoted listings is - we sellers are not told exactly what we are getting for what we pay. We're not informed on the algorithms. Seems at 2% what I do see is my 'sponsored' thumbnail photo shows up twice on the same page. Not sure what advantage that is? So what does 3%, 4%, 5% get me in promotions? Pick a % - it's all a guessing game. I've done no PL and 2-3% PL and can't say I see much difference. If everyone promotes, basically we've all just upped our fees. And if other sellers promote at higher rates than me, my listings are downgraded anyway. It does feel somewhat like extortion, so my listings are not hidden, and in conclusion, that would lean me towards paying, though reluctantly.

When Ebay started this promoted listings scam just few years ago the highest (suggested rate) was 4 or 5% with 1% minimum, now the minimum is 2% and as high as 14% just imagine in coupe of years seeing this suggested rate reach 40 or 50% and of course this percentage includes the price plus tax just like all other fees
@johndough23
@johndough23 Жыл бұрын
On the way to that..in my panel almost all the suggested numbers are 11.8%. the BIG problem here is our old LISTINGS are now polluted with low ball comps. The chances or yours selling now is greatly reduced even if a customer finds your listing. Most buyers are NOT doing the due diligence on comparing quality. They assume, since Ebay suggested a like item...the Shirt say, is the same like new the one I am looking at....wrong. But by the time they have clicked away to the junk shirt they are off to another suggested ad.

I'm not so sure the effect is as great as the chart suggests. For one, you never know which of those promoted sales would have been a sale anyway even if you had not promoted it. Combined with that, the months of your double sales are typically higher sales month than average; it'd be better to see the data compared to the same months of the prior year (but it seems you don't have that much data on this store yet). I've been largely cutting promoted listings off of my items, and although impressions have obviously reduced quite a bit it hasn't been affecting my actual sales. Indeed, my conversion rate has slightly increased. So it appears, for me, that most of the promotions were showing items to buyers who weren't going to buy from me anyway.

The problem is when most of your sells are promoted, and they are as high as 10 percent. Your now paying ebay almost 25 percent of every sell. Mercari then becomes cheaper to sell your items on. They are feeing themselves out of business. Now, with the way they have promoted set up with the new rules if someone clicks one of your items last Tuesday then decides to buy a different item from you that isn't promoted you get hit with the same promoted fee. If you sell on ebay just go ahead and know up front your going to lose a quarter of you sell to ebay. It's heavy and it's glass, now take into consideration that it shipped to the other side of the country, and the taxes are more expensive. You spending more on shipping supplies and the fee's are on shipping and taxes. Fee's can cost can go as high as 35 percent. Some things are no longer worth selling on the ebay platform. I would rather have my items get me more profit on a slower site such as Mercari rather than just hand ebay money.

Your point has merit. Think of promoted listings the way supermarkets think of premium shelving. Brands pay more for eye-level placement and end caps shelving merely because it gets more eyes on it and more foot traffic. If the entire store is set up to be all “end caps” and “eye-level” placement, it ceases to be able to support as much product. Maybe that’s what eBay is going for. More selective items. Just a thought…..

A new face from Utah to the YT reseller content providers says to never go backwards on your promoted, for example, starting at 5 but then deciding to back down to 3%… I think he claims that eBay doesn’t like that and you might get put in the penalty box.. (he’s at 2.6% by the way). Anyway, we wonder if that’s what happened to us because we went up (from 5 to 8), and then back down to 5%; sales slowed, and haven’t seemed to come back & that was a month+ ago (but also coincides with the notorious “summer slow down”)…

I didn't, which is why I stuck with the minimum and eBay doesn't seem to care that I backed off on the percentage as they still work great for me.

There’s always someone looking to use a loophole for advantage that ends up costing everyone else money. Otherwise, eBay wouldn’t be forced to add the “shipping” into that “sales” price.

Sorry but in the Comic Book and Non-Sports Trading cards is it a lot more!!! Try 15% and climbing!!! This on top of the 12% for there standard fee which is a lot more than what it use to be as well. Which puts you I the 27+% range total. If it were 2-3% and I got sales then I’d say it’s worth it. But even with the 15% promotion I don’t get any sales and on one product see sales higher than mine.

I promte all my listings at 2% some At 3-5% but after me and several sellers did not see any difference at all the same if not less but do your math. It does not help me to promote higher I always get the same results. Sorry I see no proof positive "YET"! maybe I am doing something wrong but After seeing a interview with a engineer he stated and also the interview on national show the person interviewed said that the only reason the promoted rate is for the Stockholders to regain profits . This is what i saw . Has no proof of that as well. Your guess is as good as mine but I do study this a lot and In depth.

IMO, the key to (mentally) accepting Promoted Listings is this: no matter how much eBay is making off your stuff, you need to feel that you are getting a fair profit for your investment, time and labor. That means you need to adjust pricing to make what you deserve; IF the increase makes buyers stop buying, then you are selling the wrong product. You also need to accept that some items (even though you like them) are not going to be big sellers, or won't sell quickly.

Promoted fees is the promotion percentage times the sum of sale price plus shipping plus sales. I see using straight sales price to simply things for video. Best advice you gave is explaining not to use promoted on rare items with less competition.

One major flaw with your chart. The sales chart you shows increases during the busiest quarter of the year. 3 months before december all the way until january is always the busiest part of the year for sales. So i wouldnt guarentee the data. But i agree the campaigns do work.

I have sold on eBay since 2005 this is the worst I have seen it. I have brand new Nike, Under Armour, adidas, and many more name brand clothes and shoes. Nothing is selling I have all my items promoted at 2%. Hate to be negative but it is horrible right now. I sell 1 or 2 items a day then nothing for a day or two. IT IS HORRIBLE!!!

Great clear cut information. I would suggest promoting those other items because what you arent factoring in is that ebay will show the item if its similar. For example with thise flags, if someone searched that team name with decor, ebay might also show that flag, leading to a sale. A little deeper if someone searched 1940s wall clock, theyll show a promoted similar item like a 1940s model car because they didnt have many results for the clock. Just my 2 cents. Ebay wants to make that extra money 😂

Good overview but I'm not a fan of promoted listings and was hoping for more from the video. I started promoting at 1% until ebay made the minimum 2%. Then that didn't seem to do much so I'm currently at 5%. Honestly, the only things that ever work for me to get more views and sales is listing regularly and sending offers. These 2 things boost the algorithm way more. Recently I haven't listed as much and my older listings (some decent stuff that I have researched and know has some value) just don't get views, even at 5% or more.

What's the sell rate look like for your inventory? Promoted listings help, but they're not going to create demand out of nothing.

@@justinresells like I say, I research the items before listing. Some I'd call long tail but promoting does nothing after it's been up for a while. Listing consistently boosts my sales across the board.

eBay engineers are trying to teach sellers basic marketing. You said yourself that listing and sending offers boosts the algorithm. That’s because it’s basic marketing we all need reminding of from time to time. Rotate your inventory. And not just seasonally. Take a cue from the bid retailers. If it’s sitting in your shop for a long time not selling, it’s costing you money. So to solve the problem, bring in new inventory often and remove stale items by either discounting or shifting it out of inventory into storage for another day. If it doesn’t sell within 3 tries of pulling it and restocking it later, consider it a dud and steeply discount or donate it. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve liked someone’s pricing on an object it was searching so I decided to check out the rest of their store only to find hundreds of “duds” I have to look through for a single “gem”. After 5-6 pages of undesirable items, I give up a leave. If they had just a few hundred truly sellable items, they could have sold me on 5 items instead of one. I’m looking to save on shipping but I’m not buying tired stuff. It’s the equivalent of seeing a really good item in a store’s sales flyer, but finding the place an overpriced mess when you go shopping there. I like a scavenger hunt, but not through endless hours of clutter. That’s just my buying habits, though. Giving food for thought…
