I always find packing them by hand to be a real pain, although possibly a zen moment if you choose to look at that way (so Thanks!). It's a lot more reliable than the cheap bearing fillers mechanisms that you can buy at the corner parts store (using wheel bearing grease there too of course). Getting the races out by hand carefully is the real fun ;-)

Scotty I know what you mean about the old wheel bearings. I used to watch my dad repack them without any fancy repacking devices. He would get a blob of wheel bearing grease and put it in the palm of his hand then take one side of the wheel bearing the side you could see the ball bearings and push it down against the grease in the palm of his hand and dragging it across the grease so it will be forced into the wheel bearing. Then it would rotate to wheel bearing and do the same thing again and again until he got all the way around the bearing. He didn't have a torque wrench... he couldn't afford one so he did it all by feel and he never had one go bad on him. That was old school poor way of doing things.

@gdeangelkick5 жыл бұрын
Yeah we never owned a torque wrench growing up either. I had three setting for "hand tight": 1) reasonable that my girlfriend could probably get it loose. 2) tight enough that my hand started to hurt. 3) King Kong tight when you stripped the bolt, bent the wrench and/or felt the gear in the ratchet about to give way. And the thing is, it worked when the job was done, but you don't quite know for sure if long term is was done right. I think a lot of so-called professional mechanics worked this way too, as my cousin had a trucking yard and they had every kind of tool imaginable, but I never saw them get out the torque wrench or go to a shop manual for a torque spec.
@petersgarage61252 жыл бұрын
@@gdeangelkick a knowledge of what the component does lets you know how much to tighten. Just don't strip a bolt as that can ruin your day. Most things can be done without torque wrenches. Gaskets can be a different thing as you don't want too much pressure..

@x0xCRUSHERx0x5 жыл бұрын
Did the same with mine when I had it. You sure it’s not cheaper than OEM? That’s a neat fact I will take into consideration when I eventually get my 3/4 03-06 but I may still stick with OEM just because that’s what it was designed for from the get. I priced up a complete wheel bearing hub assembly for my Saturn Aura and since it was less than $50 and the car had 150K miles on it I decided to do both sides even though one was fine. Simple job, had both done in less than 2 hours taking my sweet time. Was shocked to hear that on some cars this is an expensive and labor intensive job. I'll make certain to avoid those cars when I need a new one.

Great video Scotty. I worked at a chain shop and watched guys hammer on those axle nuts with an impact wrench. Also a good idea: say you pull out the CV axle at 120,000miles for whatever reason. Change the seal on the back of the hub while it's out! (If there is one.) You can get another 40,000 out of your bearing by doing that, you've probably disturbed the seal by taking the axle out or some times the spring pops off the seal. Also SKF is a good company, probably only aftermarket bearings I would trust even if they are made in China.

My dad was a Timken bearing QA Inspector in Ohio for a few years after we returned from Saudi. The Saudi Airlines (and I believe airlines in general) bought the Timken bearing because it was able to withstand the hashness of the desert sand/heat and gulf salt water. Nothing like a 70 mph shamal picking up salt water and desert floor to sand blast your airplane. Dad got to see the real world use of Timken bearings for a couple decades in the desert and then later test them at the factory. He swears by them and I won't use anything else other than Timken.

I already have a torque wrench, but everyone needs to see this video. Absolutely the best information. Torque them correctly every time you replace them. Through the years I've learned about going cheap on the hub assembly. AutoZone Duralast Hub assembly lasted around 30,000 miles each replacement on my Chevy Trailblazer. The OEM Timken lasts around 100,000 miles. Also the Moog brand (if you're not gonna purchase OEM) lasted 100,000 miles. Yes, I do a lot of driving. So spending 99 dollars on a Duralast that has to be replaced at 30,000 miles doesn't make sense when the Moog is only 65 more dollars and will last 3 times longer than Duralast or another cheap brand. I replaced my Lexus LS 460 at 100,000 miles and I'll have to see how long they last first. I'm at 160,000 now, but they are bolted from the rear. I still torque them but the pressure isn't on the bearing itself.

In the USA, the passenger side wheel bearing wears out faster due to the fact that we make more left turns and that will put load on the passenger side bearing more often. The other thing that will keep your wheel bearings from wearing faster is making more gradual conservative Lane changes and driving more conservatively in general.

@bradr93564 жыл бұрын
*** Couple more things *** 1. Since you already have the torque wrench out make sure you torque the bolts that hold the hub assembly to the steering knuckle to spec. This ensures proper wheel alignment an as Scotty said could lead to premature failure if out of alignment. Another point, make sure you use the torque wrench when torquing the lug nuts(not a impact wrench like most tire shops which can damage you wheel bearing), which surprisingly on most vehicles is less that 150ft lbs. Also, because the wheel studs are part of the hub assembly, before putting the wheel back on take one of the lug nuts and run it all the way down to the bottom of each stud, by slow twisting it on a couple of thread than backing it off that go a couple of more threads until it bottoms out.
@kevincruz40455 жыл бұрын
I always use Valvoline Petroleum based wheel bearing grease on the older stuff. Follow the service manual for Torquing the bearings. Usually the older style cone and cup taper roller or ball roller need only 10 INCH LBS not foot lbs. So you would need an inch pound torque wrench. Stay away from plastic bearing spacers or cheap ones, insist in timkin or equilivant, all steel. My mechanic gets to work on any new stuff...LOL!!

This is so true! I used to have a corolla that needed its wheel bearing replaced every 9 months, until I TOLD the mechanic to torque it with a wrench and not the impact. >_< Never had that issue for the next few years I had it. I sold the car to a struggling artist.

Bent wheels will ruin your bearings right quick in a hurry too! I leaned that the hard way.

Alex Bogard same, even a little bump in the rim... bought a set with 3 good rims and one which was a tiny bit of so next MOT check they told me the rear bearings were worn and should be replaced, actually was just a matter of tightening the nut and it was approved 😂 but still need to replace them sooner or later (lucky for me i have a toyota which is easy to replace)

Lot's of useful info here Scotty! Just had my right front brake caliper seize on my 2004 Honda Crv Ex Awd. I quickly pulled over. But maybe the damage was already done. That rotor is slightly warmer than the other side after a drive. I'll have to keep an eye {Hand} on it every day to monitor the temp. Thanks for the videos.

Crossing my fingers to win a new torque wrench! The lock collar on my Craftsmen one broke. I’ve had it since 1980. Took it back to Sears because Craftsmen tools have a lifetime warranty, right? Well, the tool department manager informed me that this particular torque wrench was made in China, and that Craftsmen tools made in China had a one-year warranty. Nowhere on the torque wrench does it say “made in China” - it doesn’t say “made” in anywhere. Funny how he’s certain where it was made. Said they’d be glad to sell me a new torque wrench. Told him I’d buy almost any other brand BUT Craftsmen!

Take it to a different sears
@bennyd89875 жыл бұрын
And if it did say "made in USA", it would have been replaced with one made in China or they would have weaseled out of replacing it anyway.

True

That’s bs. The boxes from the stuff made in China also say that they have a lifetime warranty. No one wonders why sears is closing, they try hard as hell to not replace anything.

Avaixus, thanks for being so certain that I’m lying. I’m not. But I don’t have to prove anything to you. Thanks for chiming in with your negative comment!

Hello Scotty, thanks for the information on wheel bearings. Having a good torque wrench is essential for doing many jobs especially putting on your lug nuts on tires. The 1 your giving away is awesome...

Wheel bearings and CV axle for 96 Honda Accord?
@ateam64865 жыл бұрын
what size motor does it have 2.2 or 2.7 is it automatic or standard stick shift, it makes a huge difference, and what base model is it, you must provide correct and full information or you will be getting the wrong parts, they made 5 different models of accord in 1996 the DX EX LX value package, and 25th anniversary edition, now yes some of those may take the same parts but it will also depend on is it 4 wheel ABS or non ABS, when it comes to honda axles and bearings there are many parts to the information needed to provide correct parts. just guessing is not a option, I am not trying to be mad or hard on you, its just how it works to get the right parts. and is it the coupe. wagon, or sedan, all are different options for the axle and bearings.
