I got tired of the electric mower and the extension cord. So I purchased this Ego battery mower. It works beautifully even on long grass. I wouldn’t use any thing else. All it takes is reading the owner’s manual. But for some people out there it’s too much work. Every garden tool I have are battery powered. Mower, string trimmer, blowers. Excellent provocative video. My elderly neighbour has had every type of mower, petrol, corded mains electric and now this model of battery walk behind. It's the correct model for his requirements. And he loves it. My Briggs powered mower of 30 years has just died. I know the battery machine won't last as long and is overpriced... but I am very tempted by the quietness and easier manoeuvrability, and compact storage. Very tempted. During the week I maintain large and small grass cutting machinery and other stuff. The staff much prefer the battery "strimmer" equipment, lightness and quietness and less operator fatigue and no fumes. For the correct task battery is now a very good choice. For our small gasoline gear alkylate fuel has eliminated all fuel problems (BUT very expensive, £25 for 5 litres, but we don't use much, but quality battery gear is overall cheaper to buy, run and renew). Large machinery is diesel and gasoline. For the future I wonder. We are installing a large PV system and it could power larger battery machinery.
@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE2 ай бұрын
I like how you explained the situation but there is one big item you're missing in your statement, "serviceability". Once the battery machines have a minor problem, solving it is going to be a pain. It's like when phones used to have a replaceable battery, now they don't at least something you can do yourself. If you choose battery, then I congratulate you, but I think staying with ICE is a better choice until things get better as far as price. I don't mind buying a $200 battery mower, running it until it breaks and then buying a new one, but $500, no way.

After 66yrs of gas mowers I bought the 2024 version of this mower in self propelled it has a two blade system like the Honda HR series, it replaced my 12 yr old Husky Honda powered mower which is still cutting grass, I got it with a free spare battery for a lot less than the cheapest china or Briggs powdered self propelled mower, I do keep it clean after every use, that takes just a few minutes with a leaf blower , and a plastic scraper if needed. I follow EGO’S battery charging instructions, I do not let my grass get too tall or too wet . It came with 3 lower blades extended run time blade, mulching blade, and high lift, all of which cut as well as the Husky did. I did discover 2 things , it is easy to forget to take out the battery before any maintenance that is unsafe, it is rear wheel drive and quite powerful, I was used to front wheel drive, I find the front end a little on the light weight side, may be the newer aluminum deck EGO model will be heavier, I’m not a greenee but I love no fumes and a quieter mower, Build quality is good, I doubt it would take a lot of abuse or neglect in operation such as over heating the motor or battery or charging a hot battery, I understand your reluctance towards battery mowers, most are very expensive and some don’t last. Just like push mowers, time will tell how well they last, buy the way a I researched these mowers for 3yrs, I was not going to pay $600 plus for a gas mower with either a Chinese engine or a Briggs, I did have a Gravely self propelled with a Kawasaki engine., but sold it for the Husky Sorry I’m long winded I respect and enjoy your mower videos Have a Blessed Day

I may go battery powered at some point, but that point is not now. They're still too expensive, and not as capable or durable as their gas counterparts. As to whether they're underpowered... I'd say, probably. I recall a review on the Toro battery powered equivalent to my Recycler, and it varied the blade speed based on what it was cutting. I.e. most of the time, the blade speed was lower than a gas powered mower. I DO love how quiet battery mowers are, but they just don't fit my needs right now. I'm no spring chicken, and I suspect that my gas mowers will last until I no longer need them. I.e. they will outlast me.

So my mind's made up: for me it will be gas-powered gardening tools as long as I can. Period. They may need some maintenance and skills to operate, but at least they do the job.

I have no interest in owning a battery powered mower for various reasons however I can see they have a place. An elderly person or someone with physical health issues that has a small lawn a battery would be ideal. My neighbour is a younger guy and his lawn takes about 15 mins to mow, at most. As a comparison my place takes about 1.5hrs, and we have the exact same size block. Currently winter here in Australia and he told me he is going battery next season as the petrol mower isn't worth the hassle for such a small area. I see his point and it possibly explains the blade condition you mention. It's unlikely a person who owns a battery mower will be doing a.lot of mowing due to run times. . There'll be exceptions but overall if a person purchases a battery mower for practical reasons like I mention above as opposed to so called "less pollution" reasons, then they will be mowing much less.

To start, the EGO mower blade is using about the same power as gas. The EGO mower will automatically ramp up the blade speed in thicker grass. For Gas lawn mower it is more or less that they are more used to running into things. I have 2 EGO mowers, one is 9 years old with the original battery still working at 30% capacity (that has be superseded by another bigger battery). Also, there is a trend of people not edging or trimming around items like: Metal pipe covers for Gas / Water or other metals caps for say Septic tanks, which is a no no because any lawn equipment will get messed up hitting that.

a small gasoline mower has about 3 or 3.5hp which would equate to about 2100 or 2450 watt electric motor. I can't see them installing an equivalent electric motor in the Ego and stay at the price point it's at. I'd say that motor is 900 watts max.
@allenpierce45755 ай бұрын
@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE Only if that is an apples to apples comparison, IE.. the EGO is not self propelled, a gas mower equating to 2,100-2,450 watts is probably self propelled. 2 the electric mower delivers all the power to the motor and the blade so needing all that extra power of gas isn't needed.

No, even if it was cheap. My lawn is generally a wet in the back yard for weeks after a rain storm. With my gas powered Craftsman, I can go mow the wet spots no problem. Been doing it for over 11 years no problem with the same mower. Sometimes, I mow and it's very wet back there, and mow it anyway. While I have to buy gasoline, and change oil, air filter, and spark plug, the fact my mower is over 11-12 years old now and still running like a champ says a lot. How many EGO/Electric mowers will one go through vs. a maintained gas mower? The times I Have serviced my mower has been very easy. It is not uncommon to see 15+ year old gasoline mowers going strong with owners who actually care about them. A neighbor of mine still has a 2 cycle Lawn Boy mower he uses regularly. The second thing is batteries. While battery fires are uncommon, they are still a risk, that risk becomes higher when buying off-brand batteries that are not made with good cells or good materials. Since I wash my mower after each use, and leave it out to dry, it's generally all cooled down before storing so a fire risk becomes basically extinct.

Personally I would not run right out to buy one. But I had someone throw one out so I picked it up and what a surprise the only thing that went bad on it what's the little micro switch that you push down to start the blades. A $10 part so I replaced it I've been using it for three years now without a single problem. They're easy to change out but I recommend you having an extra pair of hands around a simple 20 minute project ended up two hours. Always store your battery fully charged. Once a month I will run it down stone cold dead and bring it up to charge so it retains its memory on the battery charge. They're easy to store and just a good lawn mower. All on a single charge I get an 1 1/2 hours of runtime the battery does maintain a full charge through the winter months. So I hope this answered some questions that we're not asked

We paid a CHUNK for our rider but when you HAVe to, you have to. The Stihl hand mower just uses around a quarter of it's charge for trimming and the rider used from high 60's to high 70% charge. The faster the less it uses. The Stihl is self propelled with a slider switch for speed control and the rider is down to zero which is a good thing for close trimming. The Stihl and rider have economy setting for blade speed and the rider has a half speed for travel too which is plenty fast. I have 50 hours on the rider and they both stay inside. The rider just has grease fittings on the two pivot wheels and the Stihl would just oil the wheels on it. IF I was able to have a gas gob I still would BUT you get in a position where you can't, you'll do what you need to do. The rider will recharge in a couple of hours and the Stihl in about 30 minutes. If you buy a gas mower from another country or even a different state and use it at your house , this is exactly why these poisons are spreading through the whole earth . Cars same thing . Did you see the many pictures of what many huge cities looked like during the worse part of the pandemic ? Was an unreal sight , you could actually see a clear city . Factories are still being used . It’s the vehicles and all gas power items that is horribly spreading this nasty poison through the whole world . Literally ruining it . What would happen if you put a car or gas powered item in your garage , turn it on and shut your garage door with you in it ?? (Obviously never do that !!) you would DIE. Obviously we have to start somewhere making changes here and there and eventually find ways to stop this idiotic use of anything that is poisoning the earth and killing more and more people . Some many silly comments about staying with gas powered lawn equipment as it saves them money . And right there is the root of the issue .
