Al, instead of the giant board on top of the hive use individual slats that cover one frame that way you only open up the hive you need at one time. Also, expand the hive by 3 frames at least and never drop the honeycomb into the hive it brings other problems for the hive care just put it into a sealed box and eat it yourselves :D Bless you, I really hope your feeling better :D

I think it’s time to add some frames so they can expand and build honey storage frames. They need the room to build more comb for storing all the honey you cut off the top and placed in the bottom of the hive.

Is it normal to add sugar syrup at this time of year while their hive is full of honey and the hive will be shrinking down for winter? Also adding sugar while the hive has honey will lead to them storing sugar syrup and contaminated honey? Curious because we wouldn’t do that here in Australia.

@@MrPaulviles At this time of year the nectar flow is ending here in the US. What we gauge is the amount of honey stored vs what is needed to get through the winter. Where I live that's about 70 lbs. I'm feeding 2-1 syrup, as much as they will take to fill the hive. When I get near first frost I have to stop because the bees won't be able to evaporate the moisture to store it as honey. The honey stored in the deep brood super and a medium will get the bees through winter. They always remain as "the hive". All "my" honey is removed so what ever sugar syrup stored will always be the bee's stores. Next year as nectar flows and they are storing "real" honey I will super up as needed to collect my honey and before the end of summer take it off and allow the bees to store their winter honey. Usually I don't supplement them with sugar syrup but this year this particular hive got a later start. Hope this helps explain us Yank bee keepers.

if you want more air out of the bag for freezing you can put the bag under water with the opening above water

Yes! It works great. Any container deep enough (Dish pan, bowl, pot) Partially full of water, lower the zip lock bag into the water. The water pressure expels the air and molds the bag around the contours of the food. zip the bag shut and remove from the water. Easy peasy.

Al, your new mats you have put your hives could do with a wee rim to give the bees a gap over the frames so you don’t squash them when you put the mat on. Also a small hole in the mat so stragglers can get back in.

Where is your smoker to calm those bees? And they need more frames in reach to build more honey storage like @James Worth said. They will not go over to the empty frames if they are more than the width of two frames away. They need to be able to just step from one frame to the next.

Liked the look of that rice. A wind break on the windward side of the hives to shelter from most common prevailing winds. An insulation jacket for the hive. Crops in the greenhouse look great. I harvested all our apples and pears yesterday before the rain and frost. It started raining last night and has not stopped all day. Due to continue until 1900 tomorrow! All is safely gathered in 😀. Overwintering onions and garlic sets arrived yesterday, so next break in the weather I'll get them planted. Enjoy the rest of the weekend. Regards Stephen.

I would recommend cutting the cover over the frames into sections so you don't have to uncover all the frames at the same time. It will keep the bees calmer and leave any of the frames you don't want to mess with completely undisturbed.

We grow the jumbo sunflowers each year. In the cold winter we hang them just out of reach above the chickens in the coup. The chickens need to jump up to get a seed. This exercise in the winter helps to keep the chickens healthy and from freezing. Learned that from my granddad sixty years ago.....he was born in 1892

Noticed a lit of comments on lack of a smoker, use one it will help calm them. Top cover on your hives will help with not disturbing the rest of the hive. Feeding bees with a one to one sugar water not to much sugar. And don’t put the burr comb in your hive take back it To the house. Dr. Leo’s website you made one of his hives. Check it out. And BTW your not lazy. 😀

Gina, Blanch the green beans in boiling water for about 5 min, Dip in cold water for 5 min, dry, then shreds and freeze. This keeps your color and flavor container.

🐝🐝Rapid round feeder much better choice. Cut small round hole in cover board you just installed. Feeder can be refilled without exposing hive to all the cold 🥶. Much easier on 🐝🐝 bees and you!!

Gina, if you put the plastic bag in a quart measuring cup and open and fold it over it will be easier to fill and keeps the bag ziplock area clean.

I was glad to see that you put the board on top of the frames. I am going to make a suggestion that you cut the board cross ways into smaller sections. That way it will be easier to remove without disturbing the bees to much. Maybe in widths the size of 2 to 3 of the frames. You might find removing the large board difficult once the bees connect the board to the frames with their wax.

Melisa's Naturals has a video on how to get thicker and fuller hair. First tip is to take in a biotin supplement. Hair tends to start thinning in the forties or fifties. I'm in my early forties and my hair is still thick but it's looking thinner at the sides. It's only noticeable when I wear all my hair back.Then use DHT blockers. She has product in her web store but it's on the pricey side. I could buy all of Jessicurl's line (I have wavy hair and my son has curly hair transitioning to wavy so I'm a fan of that line) and still be twenty dollars under the cost of that one product. It's did make her hair grow an inch per month which is more tan average. Morrocco Method is also good at thickening hair but also on the pricey side.

Off Grid with Doug & Stacy is a homesteading channel out of Missouri. They have several videos with an expert of horizontal hives like yours helping them get wild bees established in Doug's hives, how and when to expand, checking on hive health, etc. If you haven't already, you should check those out and his recommended books. My impression was that your bees need more bars, but I wouldn't take my word for it so why should you? On another note - have you thought about harvesting rainwater from your barns' rooves? We know Figaro doesn't like riding in the car to the vet, but that doesn't mean he wouldn't like riding around the farm on the mule if you invited him aboard.

Exactly. I've watched that on some bee keeping channels, too. They seem to be overloaded, that's why they keep going to the top and the bottom. From what i've seen, i would say they should mix new empty frames, between the old full ones, like "new+old+new+old+new+old+new".... leaving new ones on both ends. But i'm not a bee keeper or a pro, so... i would recommend some reading or pro channels watching..

I have found that more frames are important early on, they might not have enough to overwinter without. This close to winter, Id have left the burr comb and let them eat it over the winter and just clean things up in the spring. They hate having the nest busted up, especially in the fall. Also, never leave honey and busted comb in or around a hive, it encourages robbing from neighboring colonies. You're getting a good start, keep studying and trying new things. Gosh Gina you are very generous with how much you allocate for one meal, I know you have leftovers but that one bag of greens beans would be enough for 3-4 meals for me and my cousin...it’s fabulous that you guys are growing food...my gardens are full, flowers with food growing in between. It’s the only way here as we do not have room for making huge vegetable gardens. I am looking forward to spring and summer, I also hope I have put enough in. Blessings to family 💖🇦🇺Australia

I have raised bees in the past I did my best not to disturb the bees I did checks on them from time to time but I used a entrance feeder there were not the in hive feeders like there are today and is a great idea but if you plan to feed through out the winter you would not want to be opening the hives during the winter and in your northern climate that would be even worse than in my southern climate you may want to think of an entrance feeder if you want to feed through the winter the sugar solution would take some real cold conditions for the solution to freeze on the outside of the hive
