My name is Michael Petherick and I live with my family at Chateau de la Basmaignee in north west France.
My brother and his fiancé bought this building with some inheritance money three years ago and we are slowly restoring it to live in, and run as a business.
It’s always a financial struggle to keep the place going and we have to work hard to keep our heads above water, but we love it and wouldn’t have It any other way.
When they knew that they were buying the château, my brother asked me if I would like to move over and take part in their new adventure... so I packed my bags, gave up my life in England and moved here to help bring this place back to life.
We do all the renovations ourselves including construction, decorating and collecting antique furniture that we buy cheaply to restore. Our goal is to fill the château with beauty and life as it once was.
I have a passion for history, art and all things old.
These videos are a series of stories about my life and experiences living in a French castle
I’ll be showing all aspects of life here, from renovation and DIY, to crafts and baking, art, daily life and a bit of fun thrown in for good measure. There’s much more to see and our journey is still just beginning.

As a member of the media I watch for more than just his personality. I think his videos are excellent with quality content too. He is very presentable and can hold his own against any professionally produced videos by any top media organisation. The video he produced on the Lakes District last year looked like a BBC/ITV production. Apart from the fact he is a quality human being.

Michael’s kitchen turned out gorgeous, and I love the Blue Spode covered shelving. Elias seems like a great fit for helping Michael with his filming. Billy and Ryan’s cameo appearance was hilarious! Especially Michael’s laughing from behind the camera. The tour of the La Basmaignee Chateau was such a welcome surprise (always welcome, in fact), and the meal looked scrumptious. Your cottage is absolutely beautiful and I love all the accents and additions, including the Beatrix Potter book 🐰 on the shelf. I intend to try your recipe for Moroccan stew 🍲, and while watching you prepare it, I could smell all the spices (in my imagination, of course). As someone who has struggled with depression and anxiety most of my life, I totally understood what you were going through in your last video and so appreciated your honesty, but also knew that you were needlessly punishing yourself for failings that don't actually exist the way you think they do. Welcome Elias. Just a tip Michael, if you turn your knife over to the dull side when scraping chopped stuff into a pot, the sharp blade lasts longer. Scraping on the wood dulls it quickly. Tip courtesy of "The Frugal Gourmet," Jeff Smith, a famous American TV chef from decades past. ;)

Michael, since I have been in semi isolation which I have really enjoyed for the most part, I have been entertained and charmed by your tender spirit, creative and talented being. I am glad you shared your broken heart with us and I do hope you are on the mend.I have caught win of some of the silliness going around. It was nice to see you smile. I was in a kind of high profile political position in my community. An anonymous person was sending awful emails about me to the people around me. I cried and cried and didn't ever know for sure who the culprit was.I ended up quitting all the committees I ran. Then one day I asked one of our local well respected judges if she ever happened to her. She said"The first time I had a person try to destroy me it was pretty upsetting but I got used to it" Then i realized how tough it is for politicians, actors and other high profile people.

Michael , I cooked dinner for a chef who worked Michelin star resturant. I made him garlic bread and cooked a stew with all the left over, his comment was sometimes it is nice to get something that doesnt look posh but is just hearty, comforting and wellmade.

I also am the type of viewer that doesn't really comment that much but I do really enjoy your videos and I wish you all the luck with them. I am not a great cook at all but I find that mixing variety of spices can make a lot of dishes taste incredible, that's what I have been doing, just tasting stuff, adding stuff and removing stuff. Also, wouldn't mind a potato video. My favourite dish from potatoes are potato pancakes. Very simple - peel potatoes, chop them in smaller pieces then you can either blend with hand blender (or whatever blender you have) or don't chop them, just grate them on the smallest possible grater option. Then add like 2 eggs and salt. Cook like small pancakes (not larger than your palm) in oil and high temperature. And serve with sour cream (sour cream is the most important part lol). (cook until golden brown) They are crispy and super tasty. :)
