All great songs. It makes you wonder why a band with such talent felt they had to steal Willie Dixon's 'You Need Love' and his song title 'Back-door Man.' It's not like they were short of money, so I figure it's because they thought they could get away with stealing a Delta Blues black man's song(s). Says a white Canadian 😎.
@davescurry69 Жыл бұрын
@@stevesmodelbuilds5473 To be fair, "Back-door Man" was only a reference. They actually took "You Need Love" from a version that The Small Faces did roughly 3 years earlier. If you listen to it, it's uncanny. The only thing missing is the riff. I've read that they figured because all the blues guys stole from each other, that made it okay for them to do it. Anyway, it all ended up with Dixon getting his name rightly on the credits and the money owed to him.

Led Zeppelin didn't really think of themselves of a "rock" band. They identified themselves as mostly a "blues" band, but you hear influences from other styles in their music as well, including folk music and music from other cultures. Try listening to the influence of Middle Eastern music in "Kashmir." "Since I've Been Loving You" is pure blues. You can hear the influence of folk music in "That's the Way" with the use of acoustic guitar and mandolin. "Stairway to Heaven" is their epic composition featuring contrasting sections, starting with a sweet, folksy ballad but slowly building to mighty crescendo and explosion of rock at the end. "When the Levee Breaks" is another heavy blues number originally done by African-Americans: Memphis Minnie and Joe McCoy in 1929. "The Rain Song" is Led Zeppelin's attempt at a tender love song, a challenge from the Beatles', George Harrison, who said they weren't capable of doing a song like that. They proved George Harrison wrong. Smoke a joint, lie back and listen to "No Quarter" to float away in a trance of sound. ("No Quarter" is a term meaning "take no pity" or "show no mercy" to an enemy.) "The Wonton Song" and "Trampled Under Foot" are pure rock and you'll notice the vocals take a back seat to the guitar. So, don't try too hard to figure out what he's singing because the VIBE is more important than the words.

Led Zeppelin was formed in 1968 after the breakup of the British band The Yardbirds... It was the unique chemistry created by their 4 members - Robert Plant (vocals), Jimmy Page (guitar), John Bonham (drums) and John Paul Jones (bass/ organ/ mandolin)... that made them so explosive musically. It wouldn't work without any single member... that was why Led Zeppelin broke up in 1980 after the death of drummer John Bonham from alcohol asphyxiation. Robert Plant and John Bonham were only 19 - 20 yrs old when they joined Led Zeppelin in 1968 w/ Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones (who were a few yrs older)... They created a new sound called 'heavy rock' that would inspire the genre of heavy metal in the 70's, 80's and beyond... Plant's high range vocals... John Bonham's powerful drumming... combined w/ Jimmy Page's guitar riffs and John Paul Jones' sound holding it all together in the back. Their first 2 albums in 1969 ('Led Zeppelin' and 'Led Zeppelin II') were huge hits in America, especially after 'Whole lotta love' became a hit single that year... and breaking big in the UK and Europe by 1970... Other songs included - 'Heartbreaker'... 'Good times, bad times'... "Babe, I'm gonna leave you"... 'Immigrant song' 🔥🔥🤘🤘 But Led Zeppelin did not want to play only heavy rock... so, they released a (mostly) acoustic album 'Led Zeppelin III' in 1970 and would perform for 3 hrs in concert w/ an acoustic set. However, the critics hated the band and despised them for being as popular as The Beatles in the 60's... Frustrated by the responses in the media, the band released their 4th album w/ no title (Often called 'Led Zeppelin IV') in 1971 w/ no band name or photo... each member of Zeppelin represented by a symbol (long before Prince did it!) ... The epic song 'Stairway to Heaven' became a huge radio hit by 1972 and the 'Led Zeppelin IV' album would go on to sell 24 million copies in the US alone. Zeppelin also had a reggae song - "D'yer maker" (pronounced 'Jamaica' in a thick Jamaican accent - "Dee -ya -may - cah"!) and country and folk songs ("Bron-yr-aur stomp"... "Tangerine"... "Going to California"... 'The Battle of Evermore'...) 🔥🔥 What happened after was a series of mishaps and tragedies that plagued Zeppelin for the remainder of their career... In 1973, they were robbed of $ 200K from a hotel safety deposit box in NYC at the end of their tour... Jimmy Page broke his finger in 1975 before a massive tour, and resorted to using heroin to counter the pain and got hooked... John Bonham was drinking heavily and would resort to violent behavior in public... Then, Robert Plant and his family were nearly killed in a car accident in Greece while on vacation in 1975. Plant was unable to walk for a year and Led Zeppelin could not tour. When Zeppelin finally got back on tour in 1977 in America, the band was already falling apart w/ drugs and alcohol abuse... John Bonham and their manager Peter Grant were arrested in Oakland after a violent altercation w/ a security guard... Then, Robert Plant got news from England that his 5 yr old son Karac had died from a viral infection, which consequently ended the tour. Led Zeppelin would release a new album 'In through the out door' in 1979 and played 2 massive shows at Knebworth in England that year... The album was a #1 hit and after a few delays, they announced a US tour in 1980. Sadly, the tour never happened... Drummer John Bonham was drinking to excess one day and was found dead the next morning from alcohol asphyxiation. A devastated Led Zeppelin announced that they would not continue. Robert Plant launched a successful solo career in the 80's, but did not play the brand of heavy rock that Led Zeppelin were famous for... The band's legacy got bigger as the decades passed, and Robert and Jimmy Page did play together for a few years as Plant & Page in the 90's. Led Zeppelin would perform 1 last time in 2007 for a charity concert w/ Jason Bonham (John Bonham's son) on drums, which was filmed and released as a CD/DVD 'Celebration day'.

In the early days, Zeppelin was heavily criticized by music critics. They didn't like Plant's high vocals, described as screeching, unimpressed by the drumming and found the guitar work uninspiring. Rock hadn't really broken down into different genres so the concept of heavy metal hadn't been defined. The critics couldn't have been more wrong. I loved the band from the very first album (the first full vinyl record I ever bought) and onward. I grew up with Zeppelin and love the music even more as time goes by.

They have such a deep catalogue, there were a couple albums, their third one, Led Zep III, and then their penultimate one, Presence, that a lot of people didn't like it as much although they all have gems on them. But superfans absolutely loved every minute of it because this was the most amazing band ever in this way. But man they were able to put out enough albums before John Bonham affectionately known as Bonzo died and put an end to it all. And they were just really taking off, but they were taking off for ten years before that honestly. And so this is from their early stuff. And they caught the world by storm for sure. Every one of them was amazin; it's just the perfect combination of extraordinary people in the right place at the right time. For this reason, it is so difficult to recommend anything because there's just so much. I've seen reactors literally go through their albums in order because all of it is just so good. But I would say if anything, right off the top my head, check out the song, Trampled Under Foot. On the one hand it's just so brutal but on the other it's just such a great dance song You Know? I'm sure you would get it.

Even the AM radio station I heard it on didn't pick up on the lyrics. Examples : "I'm going to give you every inch of my love". "I want to be your backdoor man". That can be taken 2 ways. The break - Can you hear him moaning? You can't imagine how many concerts and club shows I've been to in 50 years. I'm not listening to Tony Bennett now.
