It wasn’t always multi-platinum sales and stadium gigs for Dokken. There was a first-phase and there were early days, and it is those bold first steps to stardom which are celebrated comprehensively on Dokken’s The Lost Songs: 1978-1981 album, out on August 28th 2020 through Silver Lining Music.
Featuring spectacular sleeve art by renowned US artist Tokyo Hiro (Motörhead, Motley Crüe), The Lost Songs: 1978-1981 show the crackle and craft of a hungry young Don Dokken as he embarked upon a journey which started in Southern California and Northern Germany. It is a trek which is testimony to the sheer endeavor and perseverance Don Dokken showed in those few years between 1978 and 1981, starting from when he spent time at a guitar store called Drake’s Music, owned by Drake Levin in Manhattan Beach, California.
A fair selection of the treasure on The Lost Songs: 1978-1981 are from these early European days. “Felony” carries a thuggish fuzz-coated riff think early Van Halen in really greasy embroidered denims while “Day After Day” showed that Don could pen a radio-slaying ballad.
The writing and creation of The Lost Songs: 1978-1981 are further tribute to enduring early days of struggle in both Germany and LA., Don would return to LA for a spell after those brief European gigs, and he worked with Croucier on material, including perhaps the truest view of Dokken’s then-future “Hit and Run”, which incredibly did not end up on the eventual Breaking The Chains release. From the sunbaked SoCal hook of “Step Into The Light” to the furious, fledgling, late-Sunset Strip sound of “Back In The Streets,” The Lost Songs: 1978-1981 shows Don in his unfettered early days of balls-out attitude, qualities doubtless forged in the sheer nature of the adventures undertaken in writing, recording and deciding Europe was the place to keep cutting his teeth.
The Lost Songs: 1979-1981 not only shares that magic with the fans, it gives them the final, vital and undeniably missing (until now) early album in the Dokken collection.

Nice to listen to the story of the old days, Don. Living near Hamburg/Germany I started playing guitar in 1980. I am Dokken related since the early 80s. The first Dokken albums I bought were Vinyl! Funnily enough I bought my Tooth and Nail CD in Manhattan USA during a holiday in 89. These were very carefree abd important years in my life and I have to thank you that Dokken has been a main part of that. Good to hear the old recordings!! 😎👍

My only regret is that I never got to see you guys in concert. I had tickets for a show in Maryland when I lived there but the concert was canceled because you all had broken up. I got to see them and meet them in Buffalo N.Y. Don was so great. It would be one of my favourite moments of my life to be honest. It was during the Dysfunctional tour. (One of my favourite albums by them)

lyrick blake you’re so lucky. They are one of the few bands that were my favorite that I never ended up going to a concert. My best friend who lives in Pennsylvania is friends with Mick Marrs from Crue and when concerts start back up, she and my friend have backstage passes and front row seats. My friend could have also been able to get a ticket for me to go, but I live in Alabama now and can’t afford a plane ticket up there. At least I have seen Crue in concert for the Girls, Girls, Girls tour. But I still wish I could have seen Dokken in their prime.

Saw You performing many Years ago in the also legendary - nowadays unfortunately recently closed - Rockfabrik Ludwigsburg near Stuttgart. I loved Your "Mickey Mouse Voice" as You named it - from the "good old days" when You were young. Don, always loved the material you guys put out there. Your band was one of those great story telling bands with your music. I could relate to the songs and they were very meaningful to me. Things that many of us go through growing up. Moments captured in time for what was going on at that time period. It is great to have technology come along to restore something that was thought to be lost forever. I believe that more things are to come to restore even more material. I loved the rawness of from conception and feel that this will sound really close to that recording session. Listening to your band was the band that made me go out and buy my first guitar and want to take lessons. I loved trying to sing in the car and do what you did and it isn't easy to hit all those notes. I just know that when I hear a band like yours I don't just want to just listen. I want to be a part of all the music. I turn on your cd and break out my guitar and try to fit in. I don't hit all the notes, but try to do my small part to be a part of the whole band. Slowly learning, what works and what doesn't. The overall groove going on reals me in if I stray too far. You were lucky to find all these great musicians and each of you were able to collaborate and work together to make something magical. Like building a great sports team that you can anticipate what each other will do and be able to work off of that.

I always felt like there was a whole lotta Dokken before Dokken. There could have been 3 more albums before Breakin the Chains. Dokken, one of the all time underrated bands in Rock music history. EVER. Still one of my all time favorite bands. EVER. I've been a fan for many decades and my first Dokken live show was Monsters of Rock at the L.A Forum some of the other bands in the line up was Scorpions Metallica Van Halen Kingdom Come and one other but anyways George on the first two songs was having guitar technical sound issues but otherwise you guys rocked saw Dokken another three times after that.

Haha, I remember when I first heard Dokken....I think it was somewhere around 1986 ish. My cousin introduced them to me and I was hooked! I swore when Back for the attack was released in 1987 that I would marry Don Dokken haha crazy notions of a teenage girl, I think I was all of 14 year old. I still love Dokken after all these years. Just like a lot of bands that split up in their prime they dont realize just how powerful their music is to their listeners. They break up and the music that could have been was never created. Then they try to come back years later and it's not the same. One could only imagine the music some if those bands could have created.
