On this second episode from "The Lost Songs: 1978-1981" stories, DD talks about moving to Germany, jamming with Eddie Van Halen and more. The Lost Songs: 1978-1981 is set for release on 28 August 2020 via Silver Lining Music. Available to pre-order at: smarturl.it/DokkenTheLostSongs
It wasn’t always multi-platinum sales and stadium gigs for Dokken. There was a first-phase and there were early days, and it is those bold first steps to stardom which are celebrated comprehensively on Dokken’s The Lost Songs: 1978-1981 album, out on August 28th 2020 through Silver Lining Music.
Featuring spectacular sleeve art by renowned US artist Tokyo Hiro (Motörhead, Motley Crüe), The Lost Songs: 1978-1981 show the crackle and craft of a hungry young Don Dokken as he embarked upon a journey which started in Southern California and Northern Germany. It is a trek which is testimony to the sheer endeavor and perseverance Don Dokken showed in those few years between 1978 and 1981, starting from when he spent time at a guitar store called Drake’s Music, owned by Drake Levin in Manhattan Beach, California.
A fair selection of the treasure on The Lost Songs: 1978-1981 are from these early European days. “Felony” carries a thuggish fuzz-coated riff think early Van Halen in really greasy embroidered denims while “Day After Day” showed that Don could pen a radio-slaying ballad.
The writing and creation of The Lost Songs: 1978-1981 are further tribute to enduring early days of struggle in both Germany and LA., Don would return to LA for a spell after those brief European gigs, and he worked with Croucier on material, including perhaps the truest view of Dokken’s then-future “Hit and Run”, which incredibly did not end up on the eventual Breaking The Chains release. From the sunbaked SoCal hook of “Step Into The Light” to the furious, fledgling, late-Sunset Strip sound of “Back In The Streets,” The Lost Songs: 1978-1981 shows Don in his unfettered early days of balls-out attitude, qualities doubtless forged in the sheer nature of the adventures undertaken in writing, recording and deciding Europe was the place to keep cutting his teeth.
The Lost Songs: 1979-1981 not only shares that magic with the fans, it gives them the final, vital and undeniably missing (until now) early album in the Dokken collection.
Musicians who appear on The Lost Songs: 1978-1981
Don Dokken - vocals, guitar
Jon Levin - guitar
BJ Zampa - drums
Juan Croucier - bass
Greg Leon - guitar

I hope Don records more of these in the future. It was sort of sad to hear him talk about that '88 tour because Dokken broke up soon after that tour. So I'm not sure just how much those 4 appreciated their success at the time or that they were playing stadiums, opening for VH. Huge mistake but I'm sure they all thought they were doing the right thing at the time.

Don has been my favorite vocalist and my most significant influence. Dokken was a strong part of my life. It's a real shame with the internal tensions with him and George because I have immense respect for them both for their mental acumen. Don has always had the best stories. He's immensely talented as a musician, evaluator and producer. I have his lyrics as quotes around my home. "Misfortune can hide the freedom to choose. "The strong will survive and there's no win or lose. "There's reason to fight but no way to cope. "It's better to die than to live without hope." I met Don once during his Up from the Ashes tour, a highly underrated album. His voice had no equals then as I am concerned. He signed a picture I handed him from an auto racing celebrity event he was in at Lime Rock Park (CT). He was with Mikkey Dee and he narrated what happened in the race. Don's potent memory has always been astounding. His life on the 13 acre manor with his beloved dogs is such a peaceful and deserving existence for Don. Before I die, I have dreams of having the rare fortune of meeting Don off tour and hearing all his stories and reflections. Ideally, would like to win a day at Don's place with the dogs and nature walks. I'd leave with a wealth of rock nostalgia. Long live Don Dokken.

Monsters of Rock with you guys was my first stadium concert. I think I was 17. It was at what used to be RFK Stadium (Redskins) in Washington, D.C. It was awesome! I had tickets on the side a few rows up but once it turned dark, a friend of mine on the floor handed me his ticket through the fence so I was able to get down there for the rest of the show. Good times 🤘!

Dokken opening for Sammy Hagar 1986 at Rockford Metro Centre, The intro sound of the Tooth and Nail tour, and the band comes out Don with shades on and do not remember the first song, but I remember me as a 14 year old kid was like WOW who the fuck are these guys and well I was a Dokken fan for life. Still remember that night so well, best concert ever. Gotta give props to Sammy that night he climbed up into the light rafters to sing a couple songs and also gave props to Dokken big time, He knew how good they were. Man do I miss those days.

I was broke and didn't have any money to go into the studio cuz I had a family this is when Wicked sensation came out your band wrote me a two-page handwritten letter expressing but you needed someone to sing always loves Dawkins music my favorite song was alone and saying that many times many many many times wish I had gotten the chance to sing for you guys money it's good and bad cuz I was unable to go into the studio and record that song and believe I could still sing it my aunt was an opera singer my mother and sister and Five Sisters sing on TV I'm doing a whole new genre now on KZbin Under Groove scoundrels my most inspirational singers Steve Perry Bon Jovi deol Dokken and wish I had the chance to go in the studio for you guys I'm still out there many many more musician friends have died check it out if you have a moment and let me know what you think it's just something inside that I never want to stop doing much respect and thanks that's when you guys were called Lynch mob☝️

Old stories are ok. He never talks about how he learned to SING! His voice in the day was a killer/ headphone voice! Lyrics were great too. Lynch was the perfect compliment. They had super musical ability, but only seem able to talk about the 80s tours, excesses - whatever - blah!

So much obsession paid to this 78 to 81 lost tracks that's already been found and done with ! Why not try concentrating on getting us some better in real music like unreleased and demos from docking from 1983 through 88 ? There was 25 songs wrote for tooth and nail so that means 15 that we never got to hear why can't we get some of those ? There was a song called cry again that was left off of back for the attack that's just one that we know of there could be plenty more but we never get to find out cuz nothing's ever said or done about unreleased docking from 83 through 88 ?
